Happy New Year and CES Rockin' Eve
John here. Just getting over our own hangover—a BABY hangover—and thought I'd wish you all a Happy New Year and talk about some of our upcoming coverage. The A-Team: Intern Travis, VV, Tobey, and Noah will be hitting CES this week for some boozing and schmoozing—all in your name. If there's something SPECIFIC you'd like to hear about—HDTVs, car audio, or the length of Ron Jeremy's "beige beauty" (CES usually coincides with the Adult Video Awards or whatever they're called, which allows thousands of geeks to say that they "dated" a porn star (sorry, boys, sitting across from one in the Palms while you and your buddies nebbishly titter doesn't count)—please let us know. CES is a big show and if there's something that you'd like to hear about, we can send our warrior monkeys in to get the info. More »

UK's First HD Service Almost Here
Sky TV over in United Kingdomland will be launching the UK's very first HD service in early 2006. It will be available in 720p and 1080i for sexy goodness. The HD box will contain both the Sky service and include a PVR to record all of that trashy British television. Initially Sky will only be offering a limited number of channels in HD, including Sky Sports, Sky One, Sky Movies and up to ten HD movies a week from Sky Box Office. Is this one step closer to my dreams of finally being able to watch the BBC in HD? I hope. More »

Dell to Microsoft: "It's not you, it's me"
It seems that Dell and Microsoft may be having a falling out as of late. For the past decade Dell and Gates have been closer than Bert and Ernie, but things are beginning to drift apart after two recent changes that Dell made. First, the company began shipping desktop and notebooks over in the UK with Firefox installed as the default browser, and that's a big Microsoft no-no. Second, today we learned that Dell will not be supporting HD-DVD even though there are reported incentives that swayed HP happily over to the HD-DVD side. Is a more mainstream option to buy a computer without an operating system coming soon? Please say it's so, Dell. More »

Intel Logo Revamping Confirmed
Yesterday we speculated on the new Intel logo. Today the confirmed news came and we were correct in our speculation. The official rebranding will take place at CES, which is less than a week away. They will be scrapping the clich and over-parodied "Intel Inside" logo for a new design that properly reflects Intel's latest swing into the more general consumer market. The "Intel Inside" catch line will be replaced with the new "Leap Ahead," and as we mentioned yesterday, the individual tags placed on computers will reflect what kind of processor is being used within. Water-cooled Xbox 360
Overheating overschmeating is what Cool IT Systems has to say about the Xbox 360. From day one of the Xbox 360 release there have been complaints and issues that ultimately go back to overheating, so Cool IT has done something about this by installing a water cooling system in an Xbox 360 to be unveiled at CES 2006. Expect some very pictorial coverage of this next week from CES 2006. More »

Sony Hasnt Learned from Microsoft's Mistakes
Our half-brother twice-related through marriage, Kotaku, has some juicy information coming out of the rumor mill regarding the PS3 and stability. Their insider, Fishie, unlike most tippers, actually has some credibility since he reported dead-on facts about the Xbox 360 prior to E3, and now he offers a little info about the PS3:PS3 Info Before I Head Out Of Japan Friday Towards Noon, Thats Tokyo time. Have fun waiting a while longer, boys. No way that thing is coming out in March. The games just aren't there and lots of other isseus I can't delve into right now.
Bunch of rubbish? If not, what does this mean for the PS3? Lots of delays? A forced release full of bugs? A complete flop? Horrible game selection that will kill a good console? What you think, Gizmodoians? More »

German eBay Shenanigans
eBay is being used to fight crime? Well it was, in a way, for a 44-year-old German whose digital camera was recently stolen. What did this guy do post-theft? Naturally he tried to repurchase the same model camera to match all of his accessories, then things got a little fishy when the eBay seller whom he bought the camera from happened to be from the same town as him. Police are now questioning the seller who claims he puchased the camera at a flea market. More »

Rumor: Inexpensive Mono Keyboard from Synth Design Legend
Just how different are the traditional music hardware manufacturers from, say, Apple? Here's an example: while Apple sues and subpoenas bloggers for repeating an internal leak about a product that never shipped, legendary music synth maker Dave Smith Instruments casually throws a description, price, and color photo of its upcoming mono keyboard on a heavily-trafficked user forum. At least, we think they're different; haven't checked the fax machine for legal documents yet today. Expect a phat, real analog sound, mono operation (we don't need no stinkin' polyphony for our synth leads), and a street price somewhere around $1000. More »
$4,000 Tube Speakers for Your iPod
I know you've just been dying to spend more money this season. And what could be a better investment than the world's first tube-based iPod speaker system. Sold only at Hammacher Schlemmer, these Studio-Quality Triode-Tube iPod Speakers will only set you back a mere $4,000, but hey, you'll also get a aluminum-encased amplifier housing four Class-A tubes. The company claims they are specially made for MP3 players because the speakers will smooth over distortions found in digital recordings as well as compensate and minimize the quality loss inherent in compressed audio. And that, my friend, will cost you 4000 big ones. You know what? I think I'll take those crazy digital distortions anytime. More »

Zalman's Big-Ass Fan
Zalman has teamed up with some British Aerospace wind tunnel engineers to design this, the Big Boy Turbo Mega Fan 2. It requires an absurd 1400W of power and the included documentation even gives instructions on how to daisy chain power supplies to properly feed this beast. If you squint hard enough you can see a size comparison to a pack of delicious menthol cigarettes. More »Oregon Scientific's Wonky MP3 Player
Oregon Scientific shows us what they're made of (and what kind of drugs they're on) once again with the MP121 Waterproof MP3 Player and Pedometer. Yes, that's right, you too can now listen to music in the rain and count how many steps you've taken, all for just $150. The product is really being marketed to swimmers and, um, waterskiers it seems. But with an included FM radio, I think it's really for all of us, don't you? It measures 2.72 x 2.07 x .83 inches and includes two separate headsets, one specifically designed for swimming, and the other more-traditional earbuds. More »
Wireless
Yamaha Motorcycle Navigation System
Yamaha Motor Co. Japan is set to begin marketing a GPS navigation system exclusively for motorcycles. The product is basically a Garmin, but with some tweaks by Yamaha. It has a sound guidance system that wirelessly transmits (via FM) to a receiver inside the helmet ("turn left in 100 feet... and do a wheelie"). The system, including a transceiver and mounting rack, will go for about $1,800.

Anyone Find a 4GB nano??
Go to any retail store and it's clear that there's a 4 gig nano shortage while there's more than enough 2 gigs to go around. I've been searching locally and have been told by a Circuit City employee that there are manufacturing problems with the 4 gig and a Best Buy employee said that their order for the 4 gigs has been put on hold. Granted, they're far from a reliable source of information, but there definitely haven't been any 4 gigs showing up in stores for a couple weeks now. Any word from Apple on the subject?More »
