What Would Happen If We Tried to "Play" This NES Emulator Cartridge Casemod?

Finally, an NES cartridge casemod I can get behind without weeping uncontrollably. This one houses a complete library of NES games, uses the original buttons, and hides inside the Super Mario/Duck Hunt combo cartridge. But wait, there's more:

There's also an mp3 player, movie player and an FM radio receiver. The video out is also intact, meaning this little guy can be used to play on the big screen.

Games in action below:

To answer your question, yes, this mod is very similar to one we've featured before. This one is cleaner, boasts more features, and plays Game Boy games too, so it gets the nod today. Nice work.

Oh, and the answer to the headline question, by the way, is unicorns. They would exist. [Ben Heck Forums via technabob]

Russian Casemod Freak Builds a Miniature Living Room Inside His PC

There's a painstaking amount of detail inside the scene, including intricate housewares such as a vase, flowers, the newspaper, and a gumball machine (?!). Anyone with this much time on their hands must also spend hours thinking of the perfect way to get away with murder.

But I do love how the circuit board nearly blends in as wallpaper if you don't pay close attention. I'd like to see this turn into a trend...I think. That's where XCM Black Light cases come in.

The case itself is black and it includes a pre-cut window. LEDs inside can be set to stay put on one of seven different colors or cycle through the full spectrum. There is also a matching AirTube wind tunnel which serves as a light-up replacement for the fan shroud. Everything you need to swap cases is included, so it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so to get the job done. It's just that I would have gone with the famed stomach scene instead.

One tattoo artist/case modder molded this Alien PS3 out of super heated epoxy putty—a material that required a few sacrificial burns before becoming immortalized as a 1979 horror flick creature.

Apparently the material cools to become as hard as metal, so it's impossible to remove it from the PS3's case. Can you imagine the face on some Sony tech who opens a box to find this system for repair? Well I can. And it's hilarious. While it looks like a wooden mainframe, its guts are pure high-end gaming. The dual Nvidia 8800 GTX system is watercooled throughout, keeping noise to a minimum. This is Steampunk done right—as actual art, not as a fashion statement. Check out gallery below for a few more pics, but definitely click through to Dana's full Flickr set to see the Frankenstein in all its glorious detail.
When a video editor became depressed looking at his laptop, he did the only logical thing. He went to the garage, whipped out the welding torch and cooked himself up a portable system that could store a five-drive RAID0 array and two 22-inch monitors. Video is captured via unspecified HDMI-wielding video card and project output occurs through a Blu-ray burner. We don't know what the whole honking system weighs in at, but we do know that this 10-minute spark montage build video puts Rocky !, II, III and IV to shame:

Even with the lights on the case is still pretty cool, as it sports a semi-translucent look, allowing onlookers to marvel at the melting electronics housed within.

Iron Man Mark 1 PC Case Mod: What Would Tony Stark Think?

Like most nerds, I am in full Iron Man mode as the movie release date draws closer. So, I couldn't help but get excited after hearing about a PC case mod based on Tony Stark's Mark 1 Iron Man suit. Is it the best case mod I have ever seen? No, not really. In fact, I would have expected a little more from the dude who brought us the Team Fortress II sentry gun mod. Still, I appreciate the hand-crafted look and the 2x BFG 9800GX2 Quad Sli under the hood. At the very least, it is pretty damn cool for a three- week build. Check out the video after the jump.

Jeffrey Stephenson, the man who first looked at a cigar humidor and said, "I can turn that into a PC," has made another Art Deco PC out of wood. The G-metric Nano, which will be unveiled publicly at CES this year, is the smallest enclosure Stephenson could design that contained a VIA NX15000 Nano-ITX mainboard, 1GB of RAM, and a slot-loading DVD player. The case itself is hard Pennsylvania cherry, but Stephenson's signature inlay is done with walnut, mahogany, basswood and cherry veneers. The feet serve a dual purpose of adding style and hiding the fact that the large heatsink extends out of the box a tad.
Compiano: Part Computer, Part Piano, All Insane

According to its eBay listing, this $20,000 piano "is not a piano at all" but a fully functioning computer with a hidden 26" Philips LCD TV/monitor and a 6.8 GHz processor. Modded from a 1904 Chickering upright piano, the maker argues that it is not just "the world's most beautiful computer," but "the world's oldest computer" and the "world's highest security computer" as well. The description indicates that Compiano smells of rich mahogany, but we think we smell something else:

Longtime buyer, first-time seller "Compianos" says that the piano he used for the mod is an "upright grand"—I have always considered those two styles to be mutually exclusive. Besides that, we have some doubt as to the 6.8 GHz processor which he says runs Windows XP Media Center Edition with 1GB RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. And there is an air of desperation in his alternative payment suggestion: "I will consider a trade of an automobile + cash." He does, however, make a very reasoned appeal to "wives":

"Afraid you cannot afford it? Think again. Look at all the toys (cars/boats/RVs) your husband owns, pick one (with a clear title) and make me an offer. He'll understand, especially when he sees it. Don't you deserve it?"

The Buy It Now price is 19,998 (which would include shipping); the opening bid (which would not) is $6,998. In any case, he plans to give at least 20% of the sale price to charity. Now, isn't that enough incentive to be "the first owner and the only one in the world who can boast to have one"?
Brilliant Casemod Takes Us Back to the USSR, 1961

To hell with all this newfangled modern-looking stuff like that iMac—let's go back to the heyday of the Soviet Union, circa 1961 when the Reds were making these Rekord TV sets. Enterprising case modders took out the guts of one of those old idiot boxes and inserted a completely current Athlon-packing Windows PC inside. We're digging that gorgeous wood finish on the outside, and its lusciously retro implications.

Just like the iMac, this is an all-in-one computer, and all you have to do is add mouse and keyboard and you're off and running. Design details have been faithfully executed throughout, and there are even motion-sensitive LEDs that flicker when you move the thing around. Check out those old-timey toggle switches on the side, too. Just to find an old box like this must have been a difficult task; you don't know how lucky you are, boys. It's a masterpiece, yet another reason to make us glad the Reds didn't decide to push the button down.

This might not be accurately referred to as a case mod, but WTF happened to this PC? The Sky Puter appears to be frozen in mid-explosion. Suspended from the ceiling with pieces of network cables, nobody can complain about lack of ventilation with this one. It's the first caseless case mod we've ever seen. You gotta see the gallery on this one for some close-up views. The case itself is covered in a textured paint that simulates a leather soccer ball (sorry 'the rest of the world,' your sport is still "soccer" here) and even the peripherals are airbrushed to match. But the real kicker is the removable foosball table atop the chassis. Almost makes you wish you played Fifa, doesn't it?
We should tell our greasemonkey brothers at Jalopnik about this engine case mod that looks like a big honkin' V8 engine.

We've seen plenty of case mods, including some built to look like humans, but this is a one of a kind. This tale revolves around a case modder, a hunter and a taxidermist (sounds like one hell of a sitcom). This once-living stuffed beaver now houses a complete computer that includes a Core 2 Duo processor, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of memory and a mini-ITX motherboard. There definitely needs to be more real animal case mods. So loyal Gizmodo readers, ready your guns, knives and clubs and get modding. (This post has been deemed vegetarian and PETA approved.) –Travis Hudson

ChillTec Ultra TEC CPU Cooler: Borg-like Heat Pump for Your Processor

This is not your ordinary cooling fan. The ChillTec Ultra TEC CPU Cooler is a solid-state heat pump that's even capable of cooling below room temperature. Of course, it automatically monitors the temperature of the processor, turning the fan on and off, keeping it quiet most of the time and speeding it up when you need it most.

What we really like is its low noise levels, just 20dB at its lowest 2000rpm speed, clearly into church mouse territory and almost as quiet as not using a fan at all. We thought our 28dB CPU fan was nice and quiet, but that's as loud as the Ultra gets at its highest speed.

Plus, it looks like a Borg hive, doesn't it? This $130 cooling fan looks cool enough to warrant a place in a PC with a transparent door and lots of lighting. – Charlie White

There's really a PC inside there, and the case is made of white oak with a gloss lacquer finish. Those are actual chrome steel inserts inside those four supports, which are made of red mahogany. And oh yeah, that knob up front is a programmable USB input device. Sweet.

We're big fans of Stephenson's work, and have long admired his craftsmanship and innovation in previous works such as his Microphone PC, his Humidor NX, and his whimsically toaster-like DECOmputer.
Scythe XCLIO A380: PC Case or Jet Engine?

This is one wild-looking PC case from Scythe Corp. in Japan, the XCLIO A380 ATX with an LED-lit 10-inch fan up front that looks like a jet engine. Don't be scared away by that fan's imposing size, though—at its lowest speed the thing and its side-mounted twin put out just under 28dBA of sound. Crank them up to 1000rpm and you can overclock to your heart's content, especially with the more-efficient and cooler-running Intel Core processors.

There's plenty of room inside for drives and such, with a standard complement of drive bays, with five 5-inch bays and a 3.5" bay, along with seven 3.5" shadow bays. Of course, there are external connections for a couple of USB 2.0 ports as well as a FireWire port, too. Shipping next week in Japan for $130, we're hoping this radical-looking case might find its way across the big pond sometime soon. – Charlie White

This Boeing 737 is not going to find itself rolling down a runway anytime soon, but it might elicit a smile or two while carrying out its ground-based computing chores. This bulbous-looking case mod has an AMD FX-55 processor and GeForce 7800GT graphics card on board, and took modder Brian Carter six months to complete.

Up front in the nose are two hard disks, and you plug it in via the tail-mounted power supply. The DVD drive is nestled inside the wing, and even though it's far too corpulent to be realistic, Carter added well-placed details such as navigational lights, interior lights and backlighting for the logo on the tail.

This case mod was good enough to win the third annual Case Mod Contest at ExtremeTech. This guy certainly knows what he's doing. Remarkable. – Charlie White

Turns out, no school will take such a relic, but then we came across another idea shown to us in this photo found on Flickr, a G4 tower converted to a mailbox in Auckland, New Zealand.

The perfect mailbox for fanboys the world over, it serves as proof that a Mac G4 can finally be useful for something.
