We had a conference call with T-Mobile this morning and got some additional info on the T-Mobile myFaves service that you undoubtedly already saw ads for on TV.
If you're buying a new T-Mobile phone now, all models are going to be myFaves enabled. You can tell whether the phone you're getting is a myFaves phone by looking at the back for the 5-spotted myFaves symbol. If you're lucky, some phones sold in August (and a few all the way back to June) had this symbol and can be updated OTA, over-the-air style. You can visit your T-Mobile dealer to check.
More info after the jump.
They've also said that older phones won't be supporting the myFaves service, since it's very UI-centric with the five icons on your phone's screen. You can change your numbers once each calendar month, so there's no tomfoolery by changing numbers to get free calls.
One upcoming feature on the T-Mobile website that's worth noting is a tool to help you identify what numbers you make the most calls to, and then helping you set those as your five faves. But normal myFaves customization can be done on the phone itself or online.
This is a pretty sweet deal that we'd definitely use if our plan didn't expire in the year 2018.

Mine doesnt expire for another six years so i guess oh well
Well mine expires in november so sucks to be you guys.
There is always celltradeusa.com if you want to get out of your contract.
Read about it in wired or something like that. I have been considering leaving Sprint since they have such lame phone selections. Service and features are great, phone selection terrible.
There are reports on the forums of folks having TMo activate/reveal the Faves feature on already purchased Blackberry Pearls. Since it doesn't seem to include incoming calls from the 5, I'm not very excited.
Sell your contract on celltradeusa.com. I am considering this just to get out of my Sprint contract so I can get a new and more useful phone. I would like Sprint a lot more if they offered better phones.
And Verizon forces you to pay for every damn little thing. All that is left is Cingular and T-Mobile.
From the TMo website:
Am I charged for incoming calls from my Fave 5?
Any domestic call to or from your Fave 5 won't count against your Whenever MinutesĀ®.
Dave, I'm pretty sure it does include incoming calls from the five.
They're going to activate it on the Pearl and I will post screenshots when they do.
"Since it doesn't seem to include incoming calls from the 5, I'm not very excited."
BINGO!
get alltel. CDMA is better. I'm a sprint customer and whenever my t-mobile and cingular friends complain "the phone company is full of shit this thing doesnt work it always drops calls" im like "get a better service." and alltel lets you call 10 number, incoming and outgoing.
and sprint has plans that include free incoming calls from ANY domestic number. I think that's the real useful plan.
The calls are free incoming, and outgoing.
Personally I will *never* switch to a GSM provider. See all the cool phones the Giz posts? Count how many are GSM.
Now count how many CDMA phones there are (posted).
Subtract from that number the amount of CDMA phones already available on GSM.
For those of you who suck at word problems, the final answer is this:
GSM = better/more phones.

FYI - I have an older Blackberry 7105. I just added the myfaves, and I did not have to get a new phone and yes it does work with incoming calls. So with that, plus my mobile to mobile, it does not seem like I will be paying for many calls at all...
myFaves allows unlimited calls outbound AND inbound from your five numbers.
why do you need a new phone for this. TMO is just trying to force people to buy new handsets. No reason this shouldnt work with any phone on there network. Who needs a fancy UI on there phone to manage the 5 people you call, that you can only change once a month? BS
I must not be social enough; after email, direct connect, the mobile to mobile and 7 pm nights and weekends, I can't even get through 400 minutes a month!
BTW, Sprint (and Nextel's) free incomming includes any number, domestic or otherwise.
Better/more phones are awesome when they sit in your pocket unused because they can't find any service!
There are ads on TV?
I too have the Alltel service with 10 "My Circle" numbers that can be changed whenever or as often as you choose (they take effect 24 hrs after the change). I have been all over the country with my cellphone and have had no problem with service (except for the areas where there are no towers at all - therefore NO ONE would get service anyways). Gotta love it!
Yeah, Alltel has the MyCircle that's been out for a few months... You can have 10 numbers on it that are free for you to call anytime and and not use your minutes. The only limitation is that it's 10 numbers per account. I could only think of 6 that I use on a regular basis.
