The not-so hotly anticipated GooTube antipiracy system has jumped into beta. Creatively dubbed Video Identification, it's a digital fingerprint setup where uploaded clips are matched against a stock of legit clips provided by their owners—YouTube will then follow whatever course the copyright holder wants, be it leave it or pull it. We'll have a better idea of how well it works in coming weeks as companies sign up with the test and we watch vast swaths of video either die off or sit tight. Of course, the real question is: Just how long will this be in "beta"? [Google Blog via PC World, Flickr]

So...they aren't going to allow people to post copyrighted videos? Hmmm...I predict youtube will be dead by summer of '08.
I don't understand this whole thing, I mean, it's free publicity. Also, if the companies would just upload the videos themselves, that wouldn't be a problem. But, it seems that they are giving the clips to YouTube. Why can't they just POST those videos that clearly exist.
Isnt Gmail still in beta?
Screw that, I'd be putting money on an anti-duplicate system. The amount of videos that are uploaded hundreds of times by different people annoys me and doesn't help the YouTube servers either.
Also, has anyone noticed if a company holding the rights to a video, say a music video uploads and uploads it to YouTube, it's often really REALLY bad quality and other users have better versions, that's reason alone to tell those companies to stfu, I think.
@wakeupbomb:
Indeed, it seems like Google is going out to kill off Youtube.
It wouldn't be much of a loss anyway, Youtube was never that great before.
Who got the reference?
Vimeo and Veoh anyone?
YouTube's only positive point is userbase. And they are gonna kill it with that.
Does this mean by next year, YouTube will be filled with weirdos like that guy crying for Britney and some kid singing chocolate rain? I guess I gotta go back to bittorrents for watching TopGear :(
