When Life Gives You Lemons, Make A Nicely Designed Digital Clock

You probably remember the ol' lemon/copper battery via electrolysis experiment from when Mr. Wizard blew your mind with it in 1958. But this "Citrus Clock" by French design troupe Anna Gram updates the concept with a touch of Ikea sensibilities, to the point where we might be cool with this sitting on the kitchen counter (quick access for lemon tea). But the UV bug light we'd have to install next to it to catch the fruit flies might cancel out the sleekness. [Anna Gram via Design Boom]

Moshi Alarm Clock Will Only Shut Off If You Ask It Nicely

The Moshi IVR clock is one of those rare, heartwarming products that serves two marginalized demographics: the blind and the chronically rude. For blind folks the benefit is obvious, as all of the clock's major functions are controlled with simple verbal commands. This includes alarm deactivation, but not necessarily how you'd expect. "Gggugugughghghhhhh" or "SHUT UP" won't do the trick — you've got to greet Moshi to initiate voice commands, then politely ask it— uhh, her — to turn off the alarm. Sort of like if you're talking to a human, assuming that human hovers by your bed and plays a plastic recorder into your ear every morning at 7:30am. More »

Railroad Crossing Sign: The Latest Alarm Clock For You to Toss Across a Room

The latest wacky creation from Japanese manufacturer Banpresto comes to us in a form that looks very much like a railroad crossing sign. Truth be told, it is actually an alarm clock that lights up and mimics the sound of a train approach warning when it's time to get up. Fortunately, the giant button on the base will silence the alarm—allowing to you to return to sleep and peacefully avoid your responsibilities. The clock will most likely be a Japan-only release when it arrives in January of 2009. [Akihabara News via Crunchgear]
