This external hard drive concept entitled "IVY" adds an interesting new aesthetic to a plain old drive via an OLED screen that visualizes the content of the hard disk. Inspired by Sequoiaview visualization software, IVY starts out life as a rather plain-looking disk. As you fill it up, the design changes in sync with the content. In essence, you can automatically decorate your drive with a cushion treemap design that continually evolves. Again, it is only a concept—but it is a particularly interesting looking one if I do say so myself. [Concept Page via Next Nature via about:blank]

hm, wouldn't you need the controller to actually understand the filesystem in use at that point? Kinda pidgeon-holes you to a select few supported by the electronics
The blocky interface is not sexy at all. I think something like a pie graph or bars would be more attractive than little pink squares but I think they will get it right by the time its finally ou of concept phase.
drive communication is bi-directional, be it usb or firewire. the computer could analyze the drive in real time and send back display info. color e-ink would work perfect in this instance as you could maintain the cushion map even when disconnected/powered off.
As long as there is no text on those pretty colors, I'm okay.
This would work better if the pattern was representing something akin to the SpaceMonger application.
as long as it doesn't have the U3 software bundled with it I'm all ears
::sandisk, if you're wondering, yes; i'm looking RIGHT at you::
@scrag: I think that's what it's doing.
and yeah, oakie, e-ink would be a better choice. Heck, I'd even buy it with a grayscale e-ink display.
I'm guessing pink represents space taken up by porn? lol
I think I'd prefer to just use WinDirStat, a great open-source windows app that does just this but actually tells you what each chunk is as you hover over it and obviously works on any drive. I use it every time I start running out of space (so like once a week).
LOVE the idea! Wish it was on these flash memory cards I am dealing with right now from several digital cameras. Lets see... 1 2 3 4... 8 CF/SD cards on this desk right now and it would be cool to even show which camera along with how much space is used or left on each card.
thats looks really cool. I love the clean interface
@Ben: Hey thanks, I was looking for an application like this for a while, had a trial of one foldersizes or something, but it just didnt seem good enough to pay for. This one is better, and free! Thanks again.
That would have made great Partridge Family swag!
that pretty nifty, but i love that mouse. I highly suggest getting one. Logitech XV Revolution.
..just make sure you get SteerMouse to go with the VX and your MacBook. Logitech's own Mac drivers are awful..
This is like live-action Qix; can't wait for full contact!
It's more artistic than useful on the hard drive itself, but if it matches with the software display then it could also be a practical display that you can get more detail in the software.
SOOOOOO.... I guess those long and large squares are the porn videos HUH?
Do you defrag it by playing Tetris?
@Ben:
Amen on WinDirStat. It takes this concept to a very successful and intuitive implementation.

@NeoPoliticus: Best Comment ever!
More Vomitous Pink. When did Paris Hilton start designing gadgetry?
Color that a little differently and you could add more retro appeal by having it form the Partridge Family Bus.
Twill make you happy!
Little LED screens will be the next big thing in cosmetic gadget frippery: the slowly-lowering price of the Optimus Maximus over the next few years will chart this inconsequential revolution. In the meantime: concept art!
