T3 got their hands on the new European iPhone, and to their delight (and dismay), the phone is pre-installed with firmware 1.1.2—which is newer than the 1.1.1 firmware we currently have in the States. Believe it or not, it's actually packing some new features. But before you ask, their early testing shows that current Jailbreak software is no longer functional. So that whole saga continues!
The biggest standard consumer-oriented change is probably that the phone supports 12 languages out of the box, along with special keyboards for French and German languages (we guess that the other languages see a more limited level of support).
There's also bundled free access to The Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots, which we've already seen in the European iPod Touch.
And like we said, no more iPhone hacking for a little while. [t3]

Boo hoo.
Developers!Developers!Developers!
If 1.1.2 breaks your jailbreak software, then don't install 1.1.2. Sheesh. I'll wait until February, thanks.
Wouldn't support for 12 languages take up a nice little chunk of OS space? I hope Apple gives users the ability to zap them... :-/
@Trocar Jockey:
no because adding accent aigus and umlats doesn't take up that much space.
@Trocar Jockey: But, as the article states, in Europe, 1.1.2 is pre-installed, so they're out of luck (for now)
uuuuuuuuurrrr, why not wait until the SDK??????
Some people obviously have way too much spare time/money to spend on re-inventing the wheel each time the firmware is updated....
Order from USA like me? Downgrade to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1? Is it just me or are people nowadays getting stupider by the minute?
Apple's going to waste it's time like Sony fighting the hackers?
The hackers always win, because they have nothing to lose.
PSP's greatest hacker Dark_AleX anyone? He ripped through every firmware that Sony kept patching, and then made it Custom Firmware packing even more heat and features.
Sorry Apple, but you're fighting a losing battle.
Haha I went to the apple store to get on an iPhone and it was already jail broken. AAPL can't win!
I'm not quite sure Apple is spending ALL their time trying to break the 3rd party apps. It happens, it happens... I'm sure its just the way the hack works... if you think about it they aren't losing enough to really change the market.
If those are the only new features then 1.1.2 would be pointless to upgrade to (for me, anyways)
@websyndicate: You make me laugh. Ha ha ha!
Even some English speakers might communicate in other languages. If it does take up a lot of OS space it'd be nice to be able to zap them, but I definitely think it's an improvement.
Why is it surprising that newer versions of the firmware break the current jailbreak approach? Jailbreaking (so far) involves using a buffer overflow exploit, where (literally) navigating to a web page in Safari will alter the contents of the device with full root access. If Apple didn't fix this they'd be terribly negligent, and I say this owning a hacked iPod Touch. I'm looking forward to the coming SDK, but in the meantime I sure won't be astonished when Apple patches huge, dangerous security holes. Give the hackers a week, and they'll work around this one too.
@toren:
I do love how the owners are seeing this gaping security hole as a "feature." They dont realize how big this "feature" could be provided some malevolent individual made use of it.
It is going to be hilarious once OSX makes it onto the radar of the mainstream hackers and thieves. With this "OSX is secure" mentality being prevalent users will see this malware as just another feature and complain if Apple takes it away.
well apple certainly isn't looking for nokia-style mass market domination if it's going by protectionist movement
@websyndicate: I caught the remix on YouTube earlier today. It's great. I'm thinking it was produced on a Mac.
I'll be interested to see if we can apply the 1.1.2 update and have the apps still work. They could patch the jailbreak and leave the apps themselves alone, that way people who did jailbreak don't really loose anything accept the ability to re-jailbreak. Coupled with a firmware downgrade and were set. Probably won't happen though considering history.
And all the Apple haters and fanboys alike, can you guys go to some other thread or website to get your cat fight on? You can riff on any topic you want. No one wants to sift through your egotistical masturbation when I want to learn about a given Apple/Microsoft/Linux issue.
lol probably cause Apple only "supports" third party software in the U.S. oh well who cares.
Cool, so does 1.1.2 fix the gaping security hole known as the .tiff exploit?
OK. Big, important question for someone clever to answer:
If I go to the states and buy an iPhone, come back to UK and try to activate on O2 UK (no cracking/hacking) can it be done? Or is iPhone somehow region/AT&T locked?
Would it be a case of simply updating the firmware to UK firmware perhaps? and is this do-able before activation?
thanks!
Woohoo! More practice! Seriously glad I went for the touch instead...I'll get an iPhone at v2 when all this locking up of phones becomes obsolete.
I think I'll get an iPod touch for now. I have a very nice phone already that I use for practically everything (music, movies, online, etc) but it's just too much trouble to break the DRM to load iTunes store songs onto the phone (I'm going iTunes Plus for all my current songs, but my past collection isn't). The nice thing is, though, that I can get an iPhone here in China unlocked and jailbroken (?) for the price that the iPhone originally sold for in the US at Apple resellers- really, why the heck did Apple decide to go for an exclusive? It's only hurting them because they have to make unlocked versions for other countries.
@OBM: Why order from the US? a heap of junk is a heap of junk no matter where you order it from.
But then again, what the cool nerds want, the cool nerds get..
If people want open phones, they should buy open phones, not complain about how every version of a firmware for a phone is closed. Its so idiotic, it makes everyone look like they have learning difficulties as they try crack each progression.
@archercc: Users seeing a gaping security hole as a feature? That's the hallmark of why Microsoft has trouble with Windows.
@prodigal_son: Not an early adopter, are you?
@Major-General:
Haven't we just been reading about all of Leapards security flaws? I'd say it has more than Vista, so i guess that insult has run its course!
I am tired of waiting for an update that is feature based. What the Hell is Apple waiting for? If they won't release an iChat client then why take away Apollo and the other hacked ones. I like my iphone and i think that I have been pretty patient so far but this is getting sad! What happen to the new features Apple! I am always defending the iphone but now I am considering getting rid of the damn thing. We are coming up on six months since its release and the only thing they have added is another way for us to pay them more money!!!!! I am starting to hate Apple. How fucking hard is it to provide picture messaging, provide a functional email client, and make a way to change the damn background on the home screen.
and what about adding features like forwarding a message and small things they missed out (may be deliberately) any idea...besides the language updates whats there in 1.1.2, meantime i am (probably) happy with my 1.0.2
Haven't we had enough of these reports on the hacker/Apple war? We all know that it's just going to go back and forth until Apple releases the official SDK, and I just see it as a waste of time/energy for you guys to keep reporting on this.
@Malamus: NO, since I just got my iPhone yesterday and unlocked it! :)
@prodigal_son: One man's junk is another man's road to riches on Antique Roadshow...or iPhone, that could work too.
@andrelix: Fair enough, but what about all those people that bought their psps yesterday or those who have to turn to modding to fix their broken 360s? I don't see Giz keeping an up-to-date blog on those alternative firmwares.
@cookedart: Exactly. Apple is going to have to do better than that to get people to upgrade. Maybe we don't know all the details?
@Malamus: Point taken. Any have any info on the Xbox360 modding, I have one of those too and I could use some advice :))
What New Features?
just wait till there is a new jailbreakme.com or w/e the world isn't ending now that a new update is out. or around the corner.
