Dealzmodo: Get a Wii for $50

We're big fans of the online game rental company Gamefly here, so this deal is both fantastic and devious, depending on how ethical you are. Gamefly has a deal going that will give you either a Wii or one year of Gamefly if you get five of your friends to sign up for a month of service.

Well, instead getting five people who want Gamefly, just pay five friends $10 each (that's the cheapest Gamefly subscription) and have them sign up for a month before cancelling. You get a Wii for $50 and your five friends get a month's worth of free rentals. Win/win. Except for Gamefly, that is.

  • I bet GameFly doesn't enjoy hearing this.

  • I think the whole "1 year free OR a Wii" is their way of saying that nobody is actually getting a Wii. But hey, a free year of Gamefly - could be worse...

  • there's got to be a catch; quick, someone figure it out or I'm going to do this!

  • The FAQ on the site says the friends have to stay with the service for atleast one month. And you get to decide which reward you want. Sounds very tempting.

  • Yeah, do you get a choice, or is it like - a gamble? Because if I don't have a wii, I don't have a need for gamefly.

But if I GET the wii, you can bet your ass i'll keep the service for awhile - I can't afford to buy games on a regualr basis, but i can fford a $50 wii.

  • You only need to know one thing, from their Terms of Use...

    7) GameFly does not guarantee delivery time on any rewards earned, nor does it guarantee receipt of any rewards.

So, they'll ship it some time in 2015 via 12th class mail. You'll get a box full of Wii pieces some time in 2020. :P

  • Well, if everyone was as ironclad disciplined as J. Chen, this would be a blow to Gamefly, but...Gamefly is very realistically counting on the fact that a large chunk of people will not cancel their subscriptions after only a month. And I would be willing to bet that they've consulted an actuary to work out the stats to make sure they don't lose money. The odds on my bet? Well...
Can anybody say mail in rebate? Same principle. Not everybody will mail it in, and the company makes moola. How many times have you heard people say that they need to cancel their WoW account? But, it drags on for a few more months or so...

  • "GameFly does not guarantee delivery time on any rewards earned, nor does it guarantee receipt of any rewards."

Except that the beautiful thing in our great nation is a required ship time of under 30 days or we' are permitted a full refund :)

  • Went to the site and into Live Chat. Per signup support staff Jessica (like that's his real name)and got the following:

You get to choose your reward
Only works for a new account (no dup address of existing)
Friends must also be new 1 or 2 game paying accounts (not trial)
Friends must pay for two billing periods

  • Refund would only matter if you actually had paid for it. :P This is free, you get no guarantees.

  • The first guy gets his 5 friends and the reward; as do the second 5 and the 25 after that. The 10th go-around already involves about 10 million people, and it gets much worse after that.

    It's a pyramid, people.

  • What did you think they are going to refund you for?

The $10 each you wasted on your friends? They said no receipt either, which in all reality, means it didn't happen.

  • How do I indicate whether I would like to earn a Nintendo Wii or a free year of GameFly service?

After you meet all the eligibility requirements you will receive instructions on how to redeem your reward by submitting a redemption certificate. You will be able to select your specific reward on the redemption certificate.
For complete terms and conditions, please see our Terms and Conditions document.

  • @Architeuthis

Are you really that certain that Gamefly is going to get TEN MILLION new suscribers out of this promotion?

  • I have 2 sign-ups so far (I've been doing this for some time now). I'll let you know how it goes, or if 3 people want $10 from me through this offer, let me know.

  • ah, i already have the wii and only needed a single month of blockbuster's gamepass to copy every wii game out there. now i can just use my once/month coupon for a game from my normal blockbuster account to get new releases

  • @Architeuthis

that kind of backwards logic is exactly how pyramid schemes get people to sign up. in reality the first guy gets five of his friends to sign up and at most one of them get five to sign up, in the end there are six new subscribers.

  • the site is down. maybe they caught on to this. figuring out how to write a legal so this method wont work...

  • Nice ad for Gamefly :)

  • I think this promo has been going on for a while now.. it was a DS lite up for quite a bit until recently.

  • queue evil laugh.... muh hu hu hu hu....

    "SPECTRE's job here is done"

  • When you click the link to Gamefly it now says:

Sorry this site is experiencing technical difficulties.

    Please try again later.

    Nice job guys!
  • I had game fly for a while but it was expensive and slow.
Then I switched to gameznflix. cheaper, faster and they had movies too.

  • GameFly SUCKS. Horribly slow. Most of your time is spent waiting for new games to arrive. Hell, I'm in the same state as GF and it still takes them at least a WEEK to get a new game out after they received the old one.

Thanks for the info, fastm3driver! I'm setting up an account there and killing my GameFly account!

  • @Jonyah:
Did you chip your Wii, or did you manage to figure out how to make backups without needing a chip?

  • "2) Users must remain GameFly members for a minimum of 2 monthly membership fee charges in order to receive credit for their subscription in the GameFly Referrals Program."

  • Yeah, I think gamefly caught on and it's 2 month subscriptions now instead of one. Still a pretty good deal though if its legit. If anyone is interested in signing up, let me know and i'll send out my link.

  • Yeah, it looks like gamefly caught on and its two months instead of one for each subscription. Still a pretty good deal though if its legit. If anyone is interested in signing up, let me know and ill send you my link.
