Ugh. Cue another random bout of insomnia. I woke up this time and can't get my brain to stop thinking about work. So rather than think about work I figured I'd pop over to Giz.

What's odd is that work just got a lot less stressful and potentially a lot more interesting. I normally would think my inability to stop thinking about work would be because of the opposite happening. I find this somewhat worrisome...

@NorwoodIsMyHero: Hmmm.... could it be that you are actually excited about new opportunities at work?

Also, whenever work gets easy for me, or I don't get much exercise, I have trouble sleeping. I'm just not taxed enough.

So today while in my local Apple store a manager overheard me explaining some features of iPhoto to a stranger, and asked me I was interested in a job. They're currently hiring specialists.

I'd still have to apply, submit a resume, and all that good stuff... but I think I heard somewhere that when you work with Apple you're not allowed to post in forums, message boards, and stuff like this. Has anyone heard of this? Google has given me no solid answers.

@macpatrik: I'm sure that they have some reasonable policies about posting apple-related material while identifying yourself as an Apple employee. But as far as not being able to post whatsoever? Forget about it. That's a stretch.

Anyone know anything about affordable surround sound systems? Parents just got a country house, and I'm in charge of the budget for the " basement entertainment center" aka mancave. We're getting a nice big LED flat screen with a ps3 and while I know a little bit about TVs, I'm rather clueless when it comes to surround sound. I'm looking for something under $400 that is relatively easy to install but offers decent quality sound. The main purpose will be for playing videogames like modern warfare 2, and I was hoping to get an informed answer on the best system from some knowledgeable Gizmodians. Any suggestions?

@Giz-Guy: I dont know the price because I got mine 5 or 6 years ago at frys for $100, but my onkyo 5.1 is legit for the price. Almost tooo legit. They seem to be reasonably priced. Also, Do not get Sony for sound. I like to go to best buy or frys and test them, then just buy it online for cheap. Also, you need a really good receiver. We skimped on this and its such a hassle to mess with hdmi because our receiver doesnt do it. So get a receiver with a lot of hdmi IN. Finally, the thing that makes it come together like sweet butter is our logitech harmony. Any of them will do and they are cheap on amazon. Just give the program the model number of your component and it downloads the codes to the remote, even works on my hdmi switch i got from monoprice. WOW, i went far with this

In summary, I recommend onkyo for budget sound. And be sure to add a good receiver with hdmi in and a logitech harmony remote.

Why am I so obsessed with phones?

I've gone from a Instinct (wasn't to bad to be honest) to Palm Pre, to 3GS, to Blackberry Tour, to HTC Hero and back to the 3GS.

Now I'm twitching for a Droid, Nexus One or Pre Plus.

What's wrong with me!

@jon.athan: I would say stick with the 3GS. I'm sure there's a reason why you went two phones after your first 3GS to go back to it.

I just went from Moto Droid, to HTC Eris, to Pixi, and ever since I got my first Verizon phone, I've been wanting to go back to the 3GS.

#whitenoise
Reply

Image of link12245 link12245 12:33 AM

@jon.athan: @daGoat: I must say, after I was robbed of my 3gs only 13 days after launch last year, I went through many many phones. From Blackberries (8330, Bold, Storm, Tour) to Android phones (G1, MyTouch3g, Hero, Moment) even to a Win-Mo phone (Touch Pro), and I played Devil's Advocate for all of them. I told everyone that my Moment could do so much more than their 3gs, and that my Blackberry could be typed on much faster than any touch screen. I tried to make life less shitty by trying to make my other gadgets more appealing. After all of that, two weeks ago I got a call from my local Police Department, and they had recovered my iPhone 3gs! Needless to say, in less than half an hour I was back on At&t, with my iPhone in my pocket ready to go. Everyone says that there's so many phones out there that can do the same thing as the iPhone, and even more, but none of them can do it with the speed, or reliability of the iPhone. I more than once had to turn my android phones off and back on when they would freeze, or wait for Windows Mobile to react when I would press a button. The fit and finish of the iPhone OS is just superior to anything out there that I have found, and not to say that it is or will be the end-all-be-all, but for the time being, it's the perfect solution for what I need; a reliable smart phone. Also, with a short jailbreaking process, I can easily do things that the other phones have over it, like background apps, Wifi Tether, and the ability to download files off the web. So basically, I agree, the iPhone 3gs has got to be the way to go, and I say so without discourse for others opinions, or to make any argument, but in my honest to goodness opinion, it's the best choice.

@jon.athan: I'm the same way. Smartphones are the singular most human-integrated device, short of borg implants. They are with us all the time, and have unfathomable potential to assist us in everything we do. My mind just can't rest when there is so much to explore and refine in the handset - and it looks like the next 18-24 months are going to be the golden age of the smartphone.

After reading blogs like TechCrunch and even this one and lifehacker, I've been scrutinizing my privacy situation.
Q for you guys...
What is the deal with people lighting themselves on fire over Google having a crapload of 'information' about people?

I mean, yeah, they know I like playing trumpet and work IT and fit in a few video games when I have the time and like to learn about new things and read books and maybe they know I keep a pen pal depending on how well their email watcher works...

but isn't that it? Shouldn't it just compile that into some statistics and serve me relevant ads? Sure, maybe they sell that to other companies... and what would they do with that? Serve up relevant ads?

What exactly and I supposed to be scared of? I haven't personally seen proof that something bad will happen to me because I use a bunch of Google's services.

@Reutnes: I remember thinking the same thing before and not understanding this whole privacy hoopla until I heard the proper argument. I don't remember where I heard it (one of the many podcasts I listen to, probably This Week in Tech), but they said that privacy isn't important for the general user. It's importance lies in the principle of the matter. You might not care if a certain website or whatever knows things about you; they probably don't either. But we don't want to set a precedent that that's okay, because once someone comes around that they do care about their privacy is a liability.

I'm probably not explaining it very well, but it made a lot of sense when I heard it. Hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about and can elaborate.
