Now that hapless Gizmodo intern who spilled hot coffee all over Chen's famous pants can rest easy, because here's a set of coffee cups that link together, making it possible to carry a sextet of steaming beverages at the same time. So there you go, cherished intern—you can serve the entire Giz writing team in one trip without worrying about any of those nasty, potentially career-ending mishaps.
Jonathan Aspinall created this design concept with a plus-shaped plug on one side of each cup and a corresponding receptacle on the other, letting you pile on the cups until you've reached the maximum self-supporting row of six cups. Now we're just wondering if those plug appendages and receptacles will be sized precisely enough to detach easily, because there could be spills involved if they get stuck. [Yanko Design]

why just six?
I'll go ahead and state the obvious ...
If it works, why is it the photos show empty mugs? I certainly would not want to be the first to beta test this idea with a bunch of hot beverages.
You wouldn't have to beta test with hot beverages that would just be silly. You would beta test with cold beverages because if it didn't work know one would get burned. I mean a liquid is just a liquid hot or cold.
Now I am imagining six cups of copy scorching Jason's manparts, clumsy is still clumsy. Maybe said intern should invest in some nice thermoses. or Jason could invest in some nice wetsuit shorts, Is that a Wii down your pants or are you happy to see me?
Coffee not copy, I get up at 530 and am not really coherent until 10.
My name is Beldar. I am from the planet Remulak. I like your Earth consumables. These cups will be very useful for me. Must consume mass quantities...
would it not be easier to just bring the pot over in this case?
i like how they let a homeless man test the cups out. Jonathan Aspinall for humanitarian of the year
I guess they couldn't get a model to showcase those things so they decided to give the bum a few mugs to do it for them.
Do you really "beta test" a mug?
@BURSTANEURISM
no. you betta taste it. ok, jesus diaz, go ahead and photoshop in the 6 hands holding the mugs...
I hate to do this, I do, but...
Why just one link point? Why not a plug and receptacle at the top and bottom of the mug? It would seem to me that'd make the whole thing considerably more secure.
this is god's gift to interns everywhere
@JEFFJ-NJ
Better yet. Why not a tray. I'd say this is a solution in search of a problem. If I were doing it, I'd put a strip of male velcro up one side of the cup and a strip of female up the other side. Then all the cups would stick together. Or maybe strong magnets embedded in the plastic. I don't like having the extra sticky-outy thing on the sides of the mugs.
Considering those cups are empty just look at the strain being exerted by the guy (His knuckles are nearly white). These cups must be made out of iron!?
@craighyatt:
But, see.. those ideas are different altogether..
..mine was merely an improvement on the existing concept.
I never realized Chen's pants were "famous".
When did that happen?
*takes mugs and starts wet T-Shirt Contest*
It'll be a nice experiment to have people try to detach the mugs.
It'll be better if used with ice cold beverages so when you see the people shivering cause some of the ice got down their "trowsers".
Or hot beverages could do the job too.
But what would happen if you have some people who want coffee and some who want ice coffee. Would the temperatures become mild or sustain???
@craighyatt: Velcro wouldn't be so good because of when you wash the mugs, it would weaken the glue holding it on the mug. Magnets would probably slip if too weak, and be too hard to separate and cause spillage when separating if too strong.
If the office bitch is one spill away from getting fired, let's hope someone has enough mercy to purchase a few Link mugs before next Monday's big meeting.
@SNEAKERFIEND
I'd use boiling oil or wax, just.. you know.. to keep it interesting...
@GEISRUD
Agree on both counts.
I can only assume that someone at the company has figured out that this design would be perfect for bars and bar glasses. Waitstaff everywhere would love these things.
Second, why is it that many people who post responses don't use the reply button? Here is looking at you @craighyatt! Yes, its just one in this post, but the day is still young. And why does Kotaku not have a reply button yet?
@zenpoet: ohhhh. so *that's* what that link is for... ;)
Am I the only one who looked at this and thought it was some new Wii controller?
The Wii cup?
High on concept, low on common sense.
Holding three mugs in each hand isn't difficult.
@fluxlasers: Indeed, even 12 steins of beer is possible for those in the know: [www.davidsanger.com]
