If you ever saw the HP video Roku's Reward where a kid walks around with a PSP-ish handheld, playing a real-life video game, you might have wondered if HP will ever release the said gaming device. It is real, at least that's what HP Personal Systems CTO Phil McKinney claimed as he held it aloft. (Looked fake from here—what do you think?) Anyway, the Mscape may be real, but he says HP has no plans to introduce a handheld gaming platform. Not yet, at least. We'll be here when you do, Phil.

Is this really for real? No offense to HP, but they don't strike me as the best innovator when it comes to consumer electronics. Sounds like it might become and Apple/Pippin situation all over again. Though you never know. However if they intend to be successful they best come out with the most compelling product ever. With Apple dominating portable music, and Nintendo (with Sony trailing) dominating portable gaming its not going to be easy. Look at the Zune. It has MS behind it but it barely seems to be limping along.
There's something strange and hollow about the ends of the unit. It looks like it's sitting in some cheesy platic casing. The casing even covers the corners of the screen, making the whole unit look cheesy.
It would take some brass ones (and a ton of money) to compete with the DS and PSP in the portable gaming market. But I would love to see it happen.
Hi we're here to tell you that this is a Very Real product that we're not introducing. We just made one, and we just wanted to show you what you will never have. Thanks for your support.
lol, that's hilarious. Definitely looks fake (the display looks like a sticker), and HP could never succeed in that market. Nintendo and Sony would hand them their asses.
I'm sure it's a real device. A company as big as HP surely has an R&D department pushing out mock-ups and prototypes all the time. Real, but probably not usable. Will it be turned into a device they actually sell? McKinney pretty much says "no".
-or they could save a buck and re-label an existing Asian product.
The more the merrier I say.
@strider_mt2k: They briefly repackaged the iPod. It failed because an HP iPod is no where near as a cool as an Apple iPod.
I have to disagree. There is one, very small thing they could do to totally overthrow the Current handheld markets (or at least disrupt their market a bit). Run the thing off Linux, like the GP2x. True, we already have access to the GP2X in the states, but it just has very little word of mouth and no actual advertising here, plus scant support. HP would be quite capable of implementing these things with ease, and with an intuitive user interface for Noobs and access to more advance featured for developers (h8xors) could redefine the market in terms of what is expected for products such as these.
Gizmodo Editor or Whoever it may concern, I know I'm not officially a commenter, but wanted to express my opinion in this matter, has I feel some true innovation in the handheld market could open a plethora of doors for homebrew developers to create effective software tailored to their needs, and could open up an avenue for every day people to develop a source by witch actual wealth could be derived.
Yeah, the iHPod. Why that gem failed, I'll never know.
It's as fake as the guy's hipster-wannabe outfit. Way too old to be playing cool, mister.
You know something i an sick and tired of all these 40+ year old dudes who come to trade shows that try and act cool and sell these things to us when we know its going to suck.
Reggie Fils Aime we all know deep down inside that how much you try to sell that the wii us a great system it is actually not.
who ever is at Microsoft... Tattoos aren't cool expecially when you go flashing it on a arm with no muscles, and admit it you cannot engineer a system that can last more than a year.
sony stop with the ducks, and can someone please slap phil harrison and the other guys because if i have to go out and buy a HD-DVD player cause you guys couldn't man up and drop the price of the Blu-Ray player im going to be pist.
useless. this is like the time they took an ipod and put an hp brand on the back. hp needs to find better help these days. i think they would have better luck with caged monkeys.
@y3n0: that's not hipster. it's a mid-life crisis. it's sad really.
