If you recall, a jury full of dumbasses recently stuck it to Jammie Thomas to the tune of $222,000 for downloading 24 pirated songs from Kazaa. Now, I don't know about you, but most people can't make this go away by whipping out their checkbook. So what does an average 30 year old single mother of two do to pull together that kind of money? She sells thongs. A whole lot of thongs to be exact. According to Jammie's website, only $16,000 has been collected through private donations to help her fight the charges against her, so it appears that she has resorted to selling "Free Jammie, Free Everyone" branded paraphernalia to help make up the difference. If you would like to help, and pick up a thong, shirt, or mug while you are at it, hit her product website in the link. [Cafepress via Crave]
It is Going to Take a Whole Lot of Thongs to Fight the RIAA

Technically, it was for sharing those songs, not downloading.
This is great, maybe Microsoft could help her out and sell a special edition "Free Jammie, Free Everyone" 360.
Since she is paying for it, the RIAA should be forced to write over the rights of the songs to jammie.
This is ridiculous.I could go murder someone and get punished less for it. Think about it.
Makes ya wonder what the priorities are in "justice".
sux for her... especially because that appeal aint going anywhere. the jury set a precedent already, they've established that she's caused the music industry to lose $220,000 as a fact.
@braincase:
Yeah, think a little more about it. You really think you can murder someone, get convicted and get away with a $222k fine and no jail time? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You must be 14.
You know what's really stupid? People have been getting hammered by the RIAA for doing stuff that they know is illegal and they don't stop. Just because you THINK something should be free does not mean that it actually IS free.
@Shikestarr: Gotta agree with you, but those 24 songs were way overvalued. To braincase's point, she's paying for far more than a little electronic theft. And who gets this money anyway?--certainly not the artist.
At risk of getting flamed banned, or other consequence, I would have voted with that jury. Copywrite violation and piracy are not a-okay. The penatly was pretty extreme, but i'm starting to get beyond the point of caring anymore. People aren't getting the message that piracy is not acceptable and it is not a victimless crime. There are consequences for your actions. Accept it.
That said, this is an interesting way of covering the bill, and i'm interested to see how far it goes.
By buying her products, you are supporting the RIAA though. (Remember who that money's going to.) If you REALLY want to support your happy "music for everbody" "but we're only sharing" copywrite violation pro-piracy cause, you'd want her to ruin her life and file bankruptsy, or perhaps die before the RIAA can get their greedy greedy hands on the money.
@shikestar
come on dude, you have a sorry attitude. If you've got a point to make, by all means do so. I learn new things every day. But lose the attitude, it does no good.
Why don't you move to Memphis? It would sure help fix your your ideas concerning the justice system. Bad guys walk every day, and minor offenders get absolutely raped by the courts.
I don't oppose the guilty ruling any more than I oppose a speeding ticket. But I would be quite pissed off if I heard that someone went 20 miles per hour over and got a $20,000 dollar ticket.
@SEAN
you smell like ballz
@SEAN
nobody likes you and you smell like hairy ballz
What kind of cut is Batman getting from all of this? Or do you think he just gets paid in thongs?
I think it's great that she has found a way to raise money for her cause, as that sum of money is ridiculous. I'm Sorry but honestly there are millions, tens to hundreds of millions of people who download music online. my question is why not go after the companies that provide the means of which this pirated product is spread? Blame limewire or kazaa or share bear.
So she shared 24 songs. In the olden days you would have had to buy the albums but now she could have bought each song individually on something like iTunes. So, at $1 a song, she ows the RIAA $24, right?
There's more to it. She shared those songs, and each person she shared with also rang up $1 against her. She should be charged for every instance of sharing that robbed the RIAA of their $1.
What do you suppose the likelyhood is of her sharing those songs 222,976 times is?
That logo is putrid! *tongue in cheek* where's the American Apparel v-neck t?
The jury wath a bunch of dumbatheth and I think thith lady thould not have to pay a bunch of money juth for downloading thongs.
Thing a thong about freedom...thing a thong about the heartland...thing a thong about threwing the RIAA up the ath.
Lets hope this guy doesn't sue for her logo being too close to his......
I agree with Spock... we are talking about total bytes shared here. Add up what she was able to upload and divide it amongst how many times the average song goes in to it and blammo you have how many songs she "shared" Sheesh if you wanted to get technical you could only bill her for completed uploads.
What she has done here is petty theft. If she is really going to pay that big a bill then the other people who recieved those songs should have some sort of protection. Because if they aren't going to divvy the penalty amongst the sharers they should then be exempt from prosecution.
What I think really needs to happen is the government needs to step in and say filesharing is bad and put a fine on shared songs.
$20 per song. $50 per song. $100 per song. Something... not this quarter of a million fuckin dollars. You could buy a house for that and frankly, it's just not worth that much.
This is punishment, not restitution. They aren't making her pay for the tracks she admittedly stole, they're Making Her Pay as an example.
Don't do the crime of you can't do the time.
Argue the minutiae all you want.
Do what you like, just don't go cryin' when you're caught and punished if it's known to be wrong.
It's that simple.
That jury of dumbasses probably got paid off by the RIAA.
What strikes me as kind of funny is they seem to be charging her (and probably everybody else they nab) for a pyramid scheme...Sure- they're trying to make an example out of a few people, and they should be penalized, but it's a little out of proportion.
Thank GOD! I thought, at first, she was selling her OWN thongs. I was contemplating regurgitation.
Thongs want to be free.
@strider
I would probably beat you into a coma for talking on your phone at the movies.
You knew it pissed people off right?
@strider_mt2k: Ya don't think the punishment should fit the crime? Isn't that also part of our wonderful judicial system?
This fine, while justified, was clearly excessive, and DID set precedent, something the judge probably didn't even explain to the stupid jury.
