Two years ago, Fujitsu announced that it had come up with the world's first film substrate-based bendable color electronic paper featuring image memory function (snappy name, fellas). Well, now they've made something to put it in: The FLEPia (that's a bit better, but I'm still not convinced). it comes in two sizes, A4 (480 grams) and A5 (320 grams) and both are just 12mm thick.
It's easy to operate—put a 4GB memory card in the SD slot, and the content downloads as quick as you like thanks to its high-speed wireless LAN connection. There are six function buttons and a scroll key and, once charged, the battery goes for 50 hours. As well as the silver and, *cough*, pink pearl—which looks suspiciously like Zune pink to us—the FLEPia comes in white pearl. There's a couple of shots of the handy bendy filmy paper after the jump, plus how much the things cost.

Hang onto your huevitos lads, the sharp intake of breath may just be to much for them. Little FLEPia is a drop in the ocean at $12,685, while big one will choke ya at $21,137.

You know, if the world REALLY wanted us to stop using so much paper, they could make it a bit more convenient to switch. No way in hell I would spend way more on a paper replacement than a car, and no other sane human on earth would either.

i'll stick with my sony ebook reader. at only $350 it was a lot easier to purchase.
Is this a product or a consparacy to make the Sony ebook reader seem inexpensive by comparison?
ANoel - just 2 sylables shy of Haiku!!!
A- for effort!
I understand the logic behind making a commodity item, like a RAZR or a Zune, pink. After all, chicks dig pink right? But $13k???
What woman on earth takes a look at this thing and goes "Hmmmmm...I like...it's a little pricey...but OMG, it comes in pink!!!! I'll take three!!!"
Marketing is a sick-strange world.
As to the tech, I look forward to flexible display s and eInk going mass production. Once the price comes down, there's incredible oppurtunity.
If you look at the Fujitsu Frontech Website you will see that they are priced at this level for the first 10 samples. They plan to produce just 10,000 - 100,000 units in 2008 and start shipping worldwide up to a million pieces in 2009 with prioces of about $310 for the small unit and $500 for the large size. A much more reasonable price structure.
Retiree thanks - should be 5,7,5 right?

I may be wrong, but I think these are the specs for the refresh rate:
2 seconds (8 colors)
10 seconds (4,096 colors)
Looks like the price isn't the only thing that's WAY too high.

Lawl.
Still, I'm waiting for someone to come out with a mac-compatible ebook reader, but... whaaaaaat?

5-7-5 "syllables" is a myth, guys. 17 "on", or Japanese phonemes is the traditional length of a senryu or haiku. 17 English syllables is considered cheating.
Thanks! I stand collected CaseyG ... and I would never have read this interesting article otherwise... http://www.worldhaikureview.org/2-1/whcessay_translatedst....
:(
I got so excited until you mentioned the price. Now I must cry in the corner waiting for something better than Sony eReader.
Damn... I got excited too, thinking I can finally trade in my pokey Sony Librie...
At that price however, I might even regress to paper books...
