Sony Ericsson Claims 20MP Photography, HD Video Recording in 2012 Phones

At the behest of Sony Ericsson, the newest, dumbest megapixel war is officially upon us — and this time it's in cell phones. In an ambitious presentation about the future of handset technology, the company made a point of throwing out a target for 12-20MP for it's phone cameras, along with the capability to record HD video, to be met in 2012. We've seen that compact HD video recording is attractive and plausible, but years of relentless digital camera advertising has taught us that tons of megapixels does not a decent camera make. More »

Ericsson's Pretty Tower Tube Cell Towers Now Wind-Powered

We like Ericsson's idea for the original Tower Tube—take something as ubiquitous and ugly as a cell tower and add a touch of nice design and a streamlined manufacturing process that saves money and energy. Now they're taking the idea in another cool direction by adding a four-blade vertical wind turbine to the already-efficient design, allowing it to generate much of its own power. It's a concept in trial stages currently but something that makes a whole lot of sense. [Ericsson via PC World]

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Cleared by FCC

The highly-anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 smartphone has been approved by the FCC and helpfully posted on their website so I can spend my Saturday mornings combing through confusingly bureaucratic PDF files looking for announcements like this. The specific model vetted by the fatcats in Washington probably isn't the one we'll be seeing here in North America: it's referred to as the X1i, which in Sony terms means Europe, and it's not yet equipped with 3G. Still, this is a good indication that we will be getting the X1 before 2009, though it'll still be after those shifty Europeans. [Crave]

Sony HCB-108 Bluetooth Car Speaker Has Longest Standby, Talk Times

Yeah, I know: Bluetooth car speaker/microphone systems blah blah... but this one's got a such a battery lifespan it's a bit different. Clipped to your car's sun visor (or on your desk as a speakerphone) it'll sit on standby for a full month, and if you choose to chat using it, you can do so for a chunky 25 hours, which is apparently the longest time for both options that you can buy. It's also got "superior true duplex audio quality" with echo reduction and noise canceling, to try and stop you from sounding like you're speaking using the local cabbie's dodgy CB radio. Due at the end of the year, price still to be announced. [Pocket-lint]

Sony Ericsson Returns to T-Mobile With TM506, First HSDPA Phone

From September, T-Mobile customers will be able to get hold of Sony Ericsson's TM506 cellphone: which is also T-Mobile's first HSDPA handset. The two-megabyte flip-phone is a pretty standard tri-band GSM, with dual-band UMTS/HSDPA for 3G connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 2-megapixel camera. Doesn't look like you can do video calling, but video messaging is enabled and it has aGPS on-board. It'll be available from September 3, for an as-yet-unknown price, in a green and black color scheme. [BGR and IntoMobile]

    Sony Ericsson's T700 Succeeds the Venerable T610

It took half a decade, but the T700 is Sony Ericsson's attempt at finally releasing a successor to one of our old favorites, the T610. The T700 has a 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo speakers, a "premium metal finish", 2-inch TFT display, 512MB storage (with expandable storage), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA 3G. Release date's set some time in Q4 2008, and will come in black/silver, black/red, and just plain silver. For those who owned a T610 a few years ago, this will be both sweetly nostalgic and deeply confusing, when you look down and see that your T610 has a camera that can take photos that aren't mistaken for abstract paintings. James Bond's Sony Ericsson C902 Cybershot to go Public

Sometimes the strangest part of writing for Giz is decoding press releases: like this morning's Sony Ericsson one. Did they leave out an image of the upcoming special limited-edition C902 Cybershot James Bond phone to add to the mystery? Is it supposed to be kinda secret, à la Bond himself? Who knows: luckily T3 snagged a picture of the "titanium silver" phone. 007 himself uses it in the movie Quantum of Solace, and you can get your hands on one too. Hardware-wise the phone is unchanged from the 5-megapixel camera original, but will come with 007-themed content, including a "spy-style" game. Quite how this makes sure you're "ready for any challenge" I'm not sure. It's a mystery. As is price and release date. Blimey, Sony Ericsson's really good at this cloak-and-dagger stuff isn't it? Is Sony Ditching Ericsson For a PlayStation Branded Phone?

According to Marketing Week, Sony may be considering launching a PlayStation branded phone by Christmas 2009. Naturally that would raise some questions about the health of their relationship with Swedish mobile company Ericsson. The report goes on to say that Sony is leaning towards modifying the PSP to incorporate a phone—which would seem like the most logical route. More »

Sony Ericsson F305 Phone With Motion Gaming First Impressions (Verdict: Underwhelming)

The Sony Ericsson F305 gaming phone went official today, and the guys at Crave Asia fired off a few first impressions after spending some hands-on time with it. They claim that the screen on the F305 is way too small and the device itself is excessively slippery—which doesn't mesh well with the motion controls. All in all they felt that it had "a been-there-done that vibe to it," but the Wii-esque motion controls are a step in the right direction. Still, it seems that the F305 is a far cry from the PSP phone we have all been dreaming of. [Crave]

Nokia Successfully Tests 100Mbps Wireless Data Network

Today Nokia said that in technical trials, the target of 100Mbps download speed and 50Mbps upload speed for its next-gen cellular data network "can be met," and promised initial deployment by 2010. Americans probably won't see it until later, since the 3GPP LTE (don't ask) initiative has more momentum across the Atlantic. The founding members are all Euros, though some Asian companies just joined in, including LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo and Samsung. Still, it's grounds for excitement, since those superfast wireless data rates will get here sooner or later. (FYI: The phone pictured is Nokia's concept Aeon, and no, that's not a real 100Mbps antenna.) [Gadget Lab]

Ericsson's Tower Tube Give Cell Towers a Touch of Scandanavian Design

Cell towers are ugly. They either look like, well, big ugly antennaes, or they look like big ugly anetnnaes poorly disguised as gigantic metal trees. Whereever they're set to go up, property values drop and local communities get in an uproar. But everybody likes having five bars of service, so what can you do? Well, for starters you could design a cell tower that doesn't look like a hulking eyesore on the skyline. That's just what Ericsson went and did with their Tower Tube designs. While not exactly blending in with their surroundings, they at least look like someone designed them with aesthetics in mind, knowing that they'd change the surrounding landscape. Who knows if you'll actually get a cell tower that looks like it was bought at Ikea in your town, but it seems like it'd be a step up from what we get now, no? [Ericsson via Core77]
