In an alternative Universe, this is what the Nintendo Wii's Wiimote and nunchuck would have looked like: this is the amazing transforming GyroPod, a motion-sensing gamepad prototype that Gyration made for Nintendo back in 2001.
Thanks to a recent chance encounter, we were able to uncover a couple of PowerPoint slides that showed the GyroPod, a prototype design for a one-handed motion sensing controller designed specifically by Gyration for Nintendo.
Here's the back story: Gyration is a company that holds most of the best motion-sensing patents. Nintendo licensed a number of those patents from Gyration in 2001, and brought the company on board that year to develop a one-handed controller. (Nintendo even became an investor in Gyration, which is now owned by Thomson.)
In one of the first meetings with Nintendo's people, Gyration designers brought these animated slides to the conference room. I am a fan of the breakaway handle, and some of you may appreciate the fact that the controller forms one solid piece when connected, rather than the current Wii-mote and Nunchuk setup.
Slide 1:
Still, you can't argue that even Gyration understood the new world that was opening up with one-handed motion. The following game slide depicts only the most obvious action, and doesn't come close to foreshadowing the greatest game of all (IMHO): Wii Tennis. (Maybe that's on a missing slide?)

I could swear I've seen that somewhere before. Oh well, maybe not.
It looks like an old MS PC controller I can't remember the name of.
It's interesting that Gyration was involved - at work I set up a lot of Gyromice for people, but if you drop one once, it's pretty much done for, quite unlike the Wiimote.
@FUCHIKOMA
Amen to that! I used to think 'Gyromice' were all pieces of crap. Then I realized they are actually pretty good right out of the box, but once they get some wear and tear on them, then they start to suck.
Wii tennis is awesome. I played it for the first time this last weekend, my buddy had to tear the controller out of my hand so we could buy more beer.
So, us lefties are basically screwed...
@ideaman2020: Actually it's a left-handed conspiracy. They hope to distract us righties with Wii tennis while they procreate with our right-handed women and pass on their defective genes!
@wjousts: Obviously lefties are the elite. That's why there are so few of us. ;-)
That's funny because that's what I see Sony doing with their next controller before I even saw this picture.
@wjousts: At least we lefties get a left-handed day. Which I celebrated by myself because I'm the only lefty I know.
By the way, that controller is the tits.
This concept actually looks more comfortable and plausible than the wiimote. At least you can snap it back together.
Oh, and LEFTYS FTW!
@ideaman2020: Nothing but the truth. They found out about our awesomeness back in the medieval ages and declared it heresy along with saying that the earth revolves around the sun.
@Fetus_God_of_Love: Damnit! I was going to say that! It's like the PS remote from some sci-fi movie.
they've had this idea up their sleeve for a while now. thank god they didn't choose that ugly-ass controller.
@ideaman2020: you keep ur sinister, ungodly ways to yourself....
@bebop4one: totally! *strokes his wii-mote* its so pretty :D
(p.s - latin puns aside, i have nothing against lefthanders, just joking)
@myxylplyx:
You're probably thinking of Microsoft's Sidewinder Dual Strike: [www.idsa.org]
I had one. It didn't break into two and was literally a pain to use as most of the effort for holding it went to your left hand, rather than being shared by both.
Humm...interesting. Perhaps something for the Wii2, but I think we are more likely to see something like it on the PS4.
I like the this better than the Wiimote. This setup would be more applicable to the retro games like the cube and snes; you wouldn't have to buy additional components... And holding the Wiimote sideways to emulate a gamepad is a pain in the as... er... um... wrist? yes, that will cover nicely...
@ideaman2020:
Funny thing is, Shigsy prefers to use his left hand so I'm sure he would have some sort of influence to make it ambidextrous.
i'm left handed too. what i find interesting is that the 2 things i think are more 'geared' towards left handers are video games, and driving (on the RHS of the road - i'm in the USA).
because with the case of video games, the directional controller is used by your left thumb. all the right side controls are buttons. all you have to do with buttons is "mash em". but the directional controller requires more finesse usually. so a left-handed gamer has the advantage. (this does not apply to PC games where you use the mouse in your right hand usually).
also with driving, the steering wheel (left hand) requires more constant control and finesse than the right hand (shifting)...
anyone agree with me?
@Gypsie, don't be gauche.
@curiouscomputer,
Guitars, in my opinion, also fall into that category. Unless you're doing some serious fingerpicking, it's nice to have more dexterity on the fingers on the fretboard....
@ideaman2020: wasnt the intention, sorry. gud use, btw, not a word u hear often :)
@Gypsie, I meant to include a ;-) but it got lost in translation. [no offense taken, just extending the wordplay...]
@ideaman2020: ahhh i see, well best not let the lack of a ";)" cease the loquacity! And i guess, seeing as this is my third post in the thread i that i should say something on-topic...
um...well, dont get me wrong im a bit of a Ninty fan-boy but that is really not pretty, it looks like a slightly less chunky version of the Virtual Boy's controller...and we all know how well that turned out! personally im glad they went with the sleek, white look instead of the insipid, detachable, old look.
... I want one. NOW.
I think that while Nintendo was indeed interested in the original design six years ago, they knew that it was not embracing that revolutionary gameplay that was fun for non-gamers. Instead, the original concept sports the the classic controller and button layout, driving game designers to continue making games that use the classic button layouts. Very un-Wii like. Apparently this is the beta beta Nintendo Wii. Excellent find!
2001?
Imagine if they had used this on the GameCube... we'd have had the Wii years ago.
looks too damn PS3ish
Ooh, swanky.
I can see why they opted for the Wiimote over this, but still, this wouldn't have been a bad idea. I wouldn't mind the PS4 having something like this.
So if that was the original Wii-mote design, then the current one would be the wii-mote re-done, so it's the re-wii-mote, or "Re-mote" if you will.
Shut up, I'm hilarious.
