Alienware Further Teases Us With Powerful Area-51 Notebooks

All that pre-release hype from Alienware we heard last week led up to even more pre-release hype today, with the company unveiling its two new laptops, the Area-51 m15x and m17x. It's calling the radical PCs "the most powerful notebooks ever created." There's still an air of mystery around the two laptops, but we do know that both the 15.4" Area-51 m15x and the 17" Area-51 m17x will be using Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processors at 2.8GHz, and will have enough graphics mojo to play 1080p video and beaucoups games. Pricing and availability still weren't announced, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, feast your eyes on the pretty pics of these highly capable baubles from the extraterrestrials. • Such nice lighting... such insanely overpriced laptops.

    :(

  • still as ugly as every windows box ever built.

  • I was waiting at least 5 posts before a Apple Fanboy chimed in. Guess I was wrong.

That has to be the most hideous laptop I've ever seen. Pretty thick looking too.

  • Alienware lost it's hype for me when they were bought by Dell.

I'd take one, but I wouldn't take it with me.

This would be an awesome desktop replacement for me.

  • We use some alienware systems at work and they are pretty unreliable. Lot's of boot issues and hardware failures. Gateway's are more reliable.

  • Why why why do they have to be so ugly? With all the money they charge, you'd think they'd have the good sense to hire a design studio to rethink the look.

  • @Wilcon, that's like saying Yugos are more reliable than Hyundai. Not really a good comparison. But, funny.

  • I am a previous owner of an Alienware Area-51m laptop and would never buy another laptop from Alienware. My laptop died after a years worth of usage due to overheating.

  • @lafond66: wow, I didnt know that!. No wonder they started looking like dells. I never had one or justified the price to my mom/wife/self/wallet/bank/parolle_officer to get one. I always found them to be overpriced.

  • @qed57: Ahhh.. the Troll Apple Fanboy.. Yea and u think that Apple's Designs have been all good? lol.. Dont get me wrong my Mac Pro is sweet? but i know pcs have way better designs.

  • @lafond66: I know how you feel. When they dumped all support for the laptop I bought from them a few years back, it confirmed that I'd never buy a machine from them again. Dell clinched it.

  • About time they have an option other than the Skullcap design. Shit is hideous.

  • Dell is still the best pc manufacturer IMO. Who else will let you buy any part, for any laptop and send it to you to replace yourself? That doesn't mean much to the average user, but to a power user, that is a must. If I want to upgrade video cards or whatever, just call Dell Spare Parts. And as for reliability, you will find problems with all computer manufacturers. Don't some Macs have condensation building up on them right now? It's like the debate over who makes the best hard drive.

  • @slaughter: I'm guessing thats why they have such a bad rating, because their the best. How could you even mention Dell and Best in the same sentence? Come on now.

  • Image of strider_mt2k strider_mt2k at 03:08 PM on 11/19/07 *

@slaughter: I personally only use Maganisu power buttons.

Other power buttons switch stuff on and off, but none do it quite like the JB-3000Q GO KNOB.

    Sniff.

  • I'm thinking: Too fat, probably overpriced, probably weights a ton, fugly and though powerful, still not a Desktop.

Only people who really hates desktops like hell and has lots of money to spend will be interested in this... and though it will be the most powerful laptop around, I'm guessing it will be worth choosing something from some other brandname... and not because of the price only.

But whatever... Alienware, prove me wrong.

The Sentia comes closest to being the most well-rounded Alienware in the lineup, IMO.

  • @ DJJS, GUJUSTUD

I dont remember saying anything about Apple. Perhaps I'm a devoted TANDY user...

  • I wonder how much power the illuminated keyboard eats.
Also, the off-center touchpad still puts me off.

Regardless of these minor issues, while the form factor does play a role, not at this insane pricing!
Who in their right mind buys this stuff? At that price tag, it's cheaper to buy a pound of plastic and mould the case yourself. And add some steampunk details while your at it. And at the extra you'd pay for the Alienware brand on the cover, you could even hire someone to do the moulding part for you and still come up with a few left-over bucks to spend on a carrying case.

Also, a laptop that thick qualifies as a bludgeoning weapon in some countries.

  • think i could install leopard on theese?

  • ugly, ugly, ugly. and thick! and heavy! this is not a notebook, it's a stone-book, and an ugly one too!

  • wow, you guys are dissing the price even though
"Pricing and availability still weren't announced"
Looks like a rebadged Sager/Clevo to me. Is it 3 spindle? Better be if its that thick.

  • @calaverasgrandes: Take a look at Alienware pricing on their other notebooks, and then extrapolate exponentially.

  • @Hvedhrungr:
yeah I suppose its a given that ALienware in general is overpriced. But then hey so are most of the other premium PC brands.
    @slaughter:
Lenovo/IBM also supplies user installable (FRU field replacable unit) to end users, albeit at a very high price. Dell is poo. I hate supporting Dells. Cdroms and power supplies die way too often. The cases open too easily by accident. The Monitors get stuck at one height. And the riser cards. I spit on your riser cards.
    Asus yo.

  • I would be embarrassed to walk around with one of these cause it broadcasts to everyone "my computer is my most important possession", that said, they do make awesome computers, and i would like one, especially if i didnt have to pay its $6000 price tag.

  • Dell has just as many issues as every other manufacturer. And at least with their dirt cheap complete care warranty, you can get pissed of, run it over with your car and get a new one....not too shabby if you ask me. I have a Dell XPSR 400Mhz that has been running 99% of the time since 1999 as a file/web server, so don't tell me they don't make reliable machines. All pc's are made of parts from similar 3 party manufacturers so there is always a chance for failure.... Why don't we debate Honda vs Ford while we're at it.

  • These are desktop replacements not true "laptops" Last Alienware I owned weighed 15+ lbs. Hard to say they are overpriced when there isn't many companies that you can compare them to. If you do buy an Alienware be sure to get a computer endorsement on your insurance. Alienware is extremely expensive to get fixed and they only offer a 30 day warrenty on repairs. I paid $800 to replace a burned out MB and 60 days later the new MB died and they would not replace it.

  • @qed57: HAH! True dat, I'm still a devoted C64 user :^)

  • ps. Loderunner FTW!!

  • @Hvedhrungr: The touchpad is not off center. It is centered to the spacebar. This laptop has a full num pad on it making the touchpad look off.
