Xbox Downloads on Xbox 360, And More! (But Not Much)

Microsoft_Xbox4.jpgThe contents of the Xbox 360's fall update have been revealed to the world. Great! So do we get IPTV now? Uhh, no. Maybe the new Zunes are doing something cool with the console? Not that we've heard. How about downloading old games? Yes!

When the update hits December 4th, current Xbox 360 owners will be able to download original Xbox games for $15. Initial titles will include Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. There's not a bad game on that list...hopefully those of us with 20GB hard drives can find the room.

Also, Europe will finally get Video Marketplace downloads, though we're not certain how localized the content will be (we're guessing there will be some difference in what's offered). But in the interest of full disclosure to our fine European readers, we have no sympathy that it's taken this long considering the endless piles of great tech you get before we do. And no, we are so not even now so don't even play that card. [kotaku]

  • wow!
i can't wait for jade empire!

this is a good thing i opted for a $130 120GB hdd drive during Amazon's deal last month

  • Please, America and Europe shouldn't fight. We should team up on Asia, they get even more cool stuff, some of which we'll never see, and when we do it's way more expensive.

    Everyone pile on Asia ....

  • Even more ways to get the Red Ring of Death. FAAAAANTASIC!

  • @DancingJester: If Asia's a girl, I'm all over her! Otherwise, idc!

  • I think I'd rather get tech the same time as the US, and pay US prices. Instead we get violated worse then an weak inmate in a prison movie, passed around between electronic companies for a packet of cigarettes.

  • Now, can we play these games on live? Thats the key.

  • Does anyone know if you can have the same LiveID on two different hard drives? I would consider buying a larger drive, but I really don't want to go through the hassle of moving over the games I've already downloaded.

  • Jade Empire and Crimson Skies were both good titles. Is Mechwarrior on the list?

  • Wonder if these downloadable versions will look and run better than playing the actual DVDs? I have all these games except Crash and Fahrenheit.

  • These games are easy to find, and you can buy them for less than $15 on half.com...

  • "The contents of the Xbox 360's fall update have been revealed to the world."

To be fair, I don't think that the full list of updates has been revealed - this is a reprint of an excerpt of a leaked print magazine feature.

"I would consider buying a larger drive, but I really don't want to go through the hassle of moving over the games I've already downloaded."

The larger drives come with a transfer cable so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. You can have two hard drives, but your gamertag can't live in two places at once (if you recover, the older one stops working). You could make it work by putting your tag on a memory card instead of the hard drive.

  • @Cupajo You cannot have a valid LiveID on more than 1 storage device - if you notice in the memory blade, you can only MOVE, not COPY. If you recover the Gamertag on another console (or storage device) it renders the original one invalid.

My suggestion is to skip the Microsoft transfer kit and get a Datel Xport and use the PC to copy the files - then while you are at it, you can transfer the old Xbox1 saved games as well!

  • Only Fable? Not Fable: The Lost Chapters?
Shame I already own or have completed most of the games on that list but at least I know I can still play them when the game finally breaks.

  • i hope they upscale games to 720p and 1080p as well

  • I love how Microsoft give us this half-ass progress of backwards compatibility but want to start regurgitating Xbox games again digitally.

  • Should be $10.
AND I don't get why they don't sell the hard drives at cost. Would that not make people rent more movies and buy more TV shows?

  • @Lizard_King:

OK, thanks. Does that work with XBLA downloads too?

  • @ cupajo YUP. Offtopic, but you can even transfer the XBLA directory to your PC and burn a disc (CD or DVD) with it. With that disc in the Xbox, it will populate the XBLA area and allow you to play games (full or trial depending on permission via Gamertag). Very neat tool. Details Here [ilovexbla.blogspot.com]

  • I love the idea of downloading full games. I am such a lazy bum that I hate getting up to change disks.

Now if only they would give us achievements for these games then I would be happy. Games are no longer about pleasure, they are a way to prove to my friends that I am better than they are and I can only do this with achievements!
