Hold on to your proverbial horses, this is nothing official, but it is an interesting looking mock-up nonetheless. We are going with mock-up because:
The Apple legal team has not contacted us, the source, Alflennierlandsen, has given no explanation of how he happened upon the image and finally, the blogger has an unusually lengthy name/handle. Based on those three facts, we are sticking to our verdict. Also, we are pretty confident our PS work is more likely to be closer to the real deal, but they do look a tad similar...
We can say one thing for sure; that hand definitely does not belong to our smashing Addy, given the lack of any electric colored nail polish. We shall find out the truth soon enough, but until then, what do you guys make of it? [broken flicker].

Comments
I actually think the mock-up doesn't look half bad. The PS work looked kinda fat, but this one is fat and cute. The more you look at it, the more cute it is, don't you think :)
I kind'a like this. Although I really would like an iPhone styled iPod, I think I could dig a Nano in this format as long as it has at least 16gigs for max size and is reasonably priced.
it looks a hell of a lot better than the giz PS (in terms of what i'd want to buy...not chop work). this one has more room b/t the wheel and screen, which makes a big difference. i wouldn't mind it if the new nano looked like this.
Its not very well "mocked" you can see the black above the hand, I think its the shadow from the original pic, anyway the shadow is the same size as a normal nano.
Really really nice, even if it is a "chubby" iPod nano. I really do like the coverflow scrolling.
Yeah, I second that. This is the first "mock-up" that I kinda dig. Although I doubt the 16gb thing will happen. Still, if the final product is close to this, I'm down.
On the other hand....A widescreen Nano. Kind of an oxymornon. Like I'm EVER gonna sit there and look thru coverflow more than once or twice. I rarely use that eyecandy on my iPhone. Other than when I'm showing off of course.
@sprice82: lol yeah I can see that too. I just hope that this is what it ends up looking like.
I cocked my head to one side and was like..."huh, ok, now i get it" becasue those other mock ups really made me hate apple for a minute.
At any rate, I'm really liking the new A810 sony players, but I'll reserve purchase until the day I can go downtown SF to Apple and Sony Style and play with each.
What do you do when you can't really claim to be the smallest?
FWIW... If you look at the link to the image in the original post, you can look in the directory of where it lives... sort it by date and you can see more (fake?) nano-2 images posted today... check it out:

Wow. It actually looks buyable, rather than those mockups people have been bashing. I really hope that's what it'll look like. Didn't see that black area until I read Sprice's comment.
haha, i just noticed this image has the Beatles playing in it...

*not caring*
After the recent release of the archos xx5's and the creative zen...yea
This looks a whole helluva-lot better than the "spy" pics.
The headphone input is bigger than the current iPod headphones...fake.
@j0EfR0: wow you people really know this stuff...why would a company put a headphone jack on the bottom if that makes the cord shorter if its in your pocket and it, being the player, is right-side up???
Well I don't want to be a party pooper, but Jesus Diaz's PS work is less likely to be truth because that would be returning to the old style iPod-video-like iPod, this one kinda follows the Nano tendency
*shyness*
Just my opinion
@R031E5: read the top of the page...NEW IPOD NANO
@R031E5: Voicing your opinion! How dare you! Banhammer!.. Just kidding; you got a good point.
@Sternfan91: My 1st gen nano has the headphone jack on the bottom and you can't connect the thing to your computer while the headphones are plugged in. No idea why they made that particular choice.
Mmmm. I rather like this mock-up proportion than the "fatty" nano we can see around on the Internet.
I think the nano has the jack on the bottom because if you are looking at the ipod with the ear buds on and you stick it in your pocker, the jack will be facing up. Therefore, the cord isn't traveling around the ipod. Think about how you'd put it in your pocket, it would be upside down.
i used picassa2 and filled the shadows with light. look at the background! obviously trash.
Looks small enough to cause hand cramps. I'd want it a bit wider.
@infmom: too sleek means you cant put in a standard non-proprietary usb cord...apple sux man
What about the fact that Apple still has that free iPod nano with a mac deal for college students and teachers? And it expires September 16th. Wouldn't it be odd for them to release the new nano with only 11 days until that deal expires?
PS
-------->[brokenflicke...<----------- TRUST ME
@teexcue: not really... this isnt the sega saturn. it's not going to go on sale just as soon as it is announced...
id buy it, looks real nice.
That looks a hell of a lot better.
It might be simply too small, but I wonder if they couldn't just go touch screen for the Nano (i.e. follow the iPhone). If the Nano does indeed follow the video iPod, and the Video iPod is said to follow the iPhone, then it would make sense.
It would make the Nano a bit nicer due to the screen size increase, and if the main thing you need to do is flip through songs and hit play/pause, it might be a large enough space to do so.
the coolest video ever would be an in-house Apple video of Jon Ives going from 'development' to finished product....even if they're not released for a few years Apple should have a film-crew documenting this just for posterity's sake
....which makes me wonder if Mr Ives actually gets any ideas from all the mock-ups that hit the net...or even if he puts some up himself just to gauge an opinion (I betcha he does!)
I would enjoy it if, you know, the text was readable. A high resolution (relative) screen might be nice, but the font size would have to increase to be useful for anything other than a concentrated effort.
As this mockup shows, a large image shrunk down means small words. I say that the font should be the same size as the "menu" button on the clickwheel
what kind of anus would put the headphone jack on the bottom of the device...
@media_lush: you know what video I'd want to see? Teens going to Best Buy with their parents saying they want an Ipod, their parents pointing out another CLEARLY better and cheaper player and the kid ignoring them because they want to fit it with their friends, and then they whine about the non user-replacable battery breaking and having to spend 100 for a new one.
Although it's no longer Caturday, let me just say:
DO NOT WANT
sternfan - I feel you want a troll-off or whatever it's called but after reviewing your, ahem, argument I just don't feel like slumming it tonight. (Nice idea that parents know more about players than their teenage kids though)
To all of the "headphone on the bottom" detractors, you need to use a 2G Nano to understand why having the headphone jack on the bottom works well.
Wonky background. Obviously fake. Way to keep those eyes open giz. jk I love you guys.
I feel it is very likely there will be a new high-end iPod will be iPhone like -- full screen, OS X, coverflow, etc. Once again it will jump Apple way past Microsoft and everyone else trying to do PMPs.
If so, the question is, will it just be a music player or will it be more like everything an iPhone has except the phone? i.e. wifi, Safari, Calendar, soft keyboard, et al... maybe with a hard drive or lots more storage. Sure hope so...
PS for sure.
1/ Shadow is long (edited from Nano)
2/ The size is nano size, but cut it shorter.
3/ The top of this nano looks blur (look at the edges.
4/ The screen looks fake, the screen is so blur.
Not a bad design. Still wish they would include codecs for more formats, like Creative does with their pmp's.
It's clearly a fake. They just took an inch off the Nano. Apple's design team wouldn't do something so lazy.
@deathbychichi: i think the whole internet thing might be asking for a bit too much. also you can consider some mp3 player brands like archos tried it but it does drive up the price(604 wifi i think)
Lightning strikes again.
@omg-ponies: lulz...shortest woot-off EVA
@deathbychichi: that's the 400 dollar question.
its fake.. sorry if you've already concluded that... but i didnt wanna read 45 comments, but zoom into the pic, half way between the screen and the clic wheel, you can see a faint line, again sorry if his is a repeat
I can make one, too!
@SpacePenguinBot: lol
@kibets:
I don't know.
What kind of anus makes Bill Gates his avatar?
@SpacePenguinBot: LOL Well done man.. well done
FAKE old style ear bud jack.............
