AP Reporter Gets Zapped with Military Pain Gun

Nothing makes me chuckle like watching a reporter being shot with a Tazer for the sake of a story. That's what this fearless AP reporter did, except he raised the stakes by choosing to be zapped with the military's pain gun, a gun so strong it makes you feel like your entire body is on fire.

Maybe I'm just a little warped, but I was hoping for a bigger reaction from our pain-loving scribe. Props to the reporter for having the cojones to do it though, 'cause I know I sure wouldn't have volunteered.

  • screw the pain gun call me when they got the Orgazmorator up and running.

  • Holy Crap, that looked EXACTLY like my fifth grade teacher! I took some pleasure watching that man got zapped.

  • No slow mo replay of the reaction? That would have made it so much more gratifying.

  • I like hearing the guy in the background say "LETS KEP THE CROWD BACK, PLEASE..." Almost time to use the pain gun. :D

  • Watch the video closely - was that smoke coming off him when it hit, or a compression artifact?

  • would've been funny if his hat popped off

  • He made it seem almost pleasant. I would assume though, that he received a much shorter "zap" than would be administered on a battlefield.

So it was more like waving your hand over a flame, where as a full zap would be like having your hand on fire.

Nevertheless, that is one bad ass old dude.

  • tomorrow's story: reporter gets terminal cancer and rendered infertile by military "pain gun."

  • The world of gadgets would be more entertaining if we all lived with cartoon physics.

Can we do it with a lawyer next?

    Your choice.

  • Oh, hell, in a few years anyone gathering to protest President Jeb Bush's revocation of the Second Amendment will be able to share the experience.

So this weapon demo was activated at level 1 setting. I wonder what level 50 does?

  • Why can't they show us the actual gun before and after they fry this guy? I'm calling shenanigans, especially because this AP Reporter looks like he could be related to Dick Cheney. Something is afoot here...

  • The pain gun looks like a big radar dish. Nothing special. it's huge too, has to be mounted on a HMVE.

  • What's a HMVE?

Do you mean HMMWV - High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle? I bet you do.

That guy is impressive to subject himself to that. It would be funny if sheepish laughter was a side effect.

  • But the question is, if the reaction is to run away, how would you know which way to run?
What happens if you're hit by two at once? from different direction.
Seems like it just makes you jump. I think that the only benefit is that it's hard for the enemy to aim when hit by that weapon.
what is the range of this device? Seems that the best tactic against it is to fly a RC plane with pouch of C4 and blast it

  • if only Giz reporters were this dedicated...

  • to me it just looked like the guy chickened out and they just filmed him saying 'NO!'. being hit with an invisiblebeam isnt hard to fake...

  • I've seen other demos of this device - and it looks like a woman was getting ready to get zapped in the background at the end while he was talking.

It is basically a microwave beam that stimulates the first layer of skin, where the nerve endings are, and it feels like intense heat. It is designed for area denial, to break up crowds, etc.

  • Would Chen at least stick it in his pants?

  • Just the thing needed to dispense those pesky peaceful protesters. No more of those nasty fire hoses, or those sit ins by those Ghandi types. Push a button and those crowds just walk away on their own. Guess they didn't really care THAT much about the cause they were protesting.

  • Ah, the Active Denial System was also on tonight's episode of Futureweapons on the Discovery channel. It looks like the bit was filmed at the same demo - same background (trees, razor wire, etc). The host was zapped, and didn't react as much, but he got out of the way fast enough.

  • Well, yeah, who ever watched the show knows they dont use Microwaves, as that would probably be deadly. They use some wird thing(i think they called it nano waves, but I never heared of those, and it sounds kind of dumb) it is used by sattelites, apperantly, and was around for a while. Though it works just like microwaves, viberating water molecules. So what is the difference, anyway?

This is basicly a big dish(excpet its flat, and shiny, and has some freaky patterns on it), and yes, it has to be mounted, this isnt an actual handheld gun.

However, the range is incredible for a non-lethal weapon(which leaves absolutely no lasting effects), and it can determine between trouble makers and, well, I m not reall sure what else, or exactly how. On the show they had three people standing still, two in uniform and one in a jacket, so I guess it looksat civilians and military/police, but anyone can show up in camo(and I believe that would be the first time it would actually camoflauge you).

If you were to be exposed to it for too long, bad things might happen to your skin, and even worse, you are can explode or melt or something(i am serious) so it is built to only work in burst that are as long as a single blink, as they cant penetrate you eye lid, and there are a lot mroe of these fail-safes, to protect people from any real damage.

I know I said there wern't any lasting effects, but after bing blasted, blisters should apear right abotu where you were hit, but they go away easier then a bad sunburn.

As safe as they made it seem, no one explained what would happen if someone happened to be carrying a water bottle. Would it explode, heat up, both? Would the exposure be enough for anything to happen?

And just a side note, how cool would it be to fire this at fog, or a cloud or something?

  • @Forestbear: Yes, your right ONE version is mounted on a HMMWV ... but another is suitable to be mounted on the bottom of an assault rifle.

    Either way, the thing hurts.

  • @Metacore:

    [/QUOTE]

Hmmm ... could it possibly be the length of the wave employed ... no, that would make way too much sense!

Also, there are safety concerns with this weapon ... much like any other weapon. Physically speaking, it could be very dangerous to certain parts of the body ... especially the eyes ... if exploited. But just like any other weapon, the arms barer needs to exercise discretion in it's use. I'm sure the intent of use isn't frying the 'victim' much like holding a light filled magnifying glass over an ant ... but as an alternative to using a projectile that could have greater lasting effects; like death.

Also, about the water. While I have not tested it, I can be fairly confident in calling shenanigans on that. Devices that employ waves, work just like your microwave in your kitchen with a few differences. They are directional and are 'tuned' to the matter being penetrated. Without getting all 'Bill Nye' I will leave it at that.
