Electrolux Cyber fridge: Yet Another Solution in Search of a Problem

electrolux_cyber_fridge.jpgHere's the next generation of that goofy idea of combining computers and refrigerators, the Electrolux Cyber fridge, whose next-gen innovation is its LCD screen mounted atop the box instead of on the door. Smart thinkin', Electrolux, because now that crowd of people reading email, buying and ordering food and reading Gizmodo in the kitchen won't have their concentration interrupted when you open the door to do something that normal people do in that room: get something out of the refrigerator.

But wait, isn't that a touchscreen up there? Apparently only the taller members of the household will be allowed to use this PC. Anyway, when are these appliance companies going to give up on this lame idea? People who have enough money to buy such a high-end refrigerator are probably smart enough to know what they have in the refrigerator and what they need to add to it or not. Give it up, dopes, nobody's that stupid.

  • But does it run linux?

Who *doesn't* want to stand in front of the refrigerator and browse the internet and read email?

    Some advice:

Do NOT leave this under control of the ship's AI, no matter how "enthusiastic" it might be about the mission.

    I can't do that

    Chiropracters of the world, rejoice!

  • For the dough, I'm still buying a sub zero.

  • Can I play Doom on it?

  • I wonder if google and aol will store my search and order result? maybe "Da Man" can then tabulate how long it takes me to drink my milk and bombard me with OJ and Milk commercials when I slack off.

  • 1) For the dough, I bought a commercial Traulsen with a half glass door on the top, and half solid stainless on the bottom for my kitchen. Yeah, it's overboard, but boy does it ever look cool. :)

    2) What I don't get is why appliance companies are trying to integrate LCD displays... Geeks only want one thing, the ability to poll (and maybe control) the device and its stats via some sort of scripting. For instance: put a NIC on the back and give it some basic web controls... Let me poll temp stats, etc. Maybe some other stats like I get from my PC (fan speed, time on/off, power cycling stats, etc.) would be cool too. I'd love to be able to monitor fridge and freezer temp and set alarms, maybe via SNMP. Same for my heating and cooling... Seems simple enough, and not too expensive.

  • Wait, so am I the only one who keeps his laptop on top of the fridge and checks email by standing on tippy-toes and squinting real hard?

    This idea sucks.

  • All refrigerators with LCD's in the door suck.
Until now its been mainly Korean company LG that's been doing it.
But now with Frigidaire (aka Electrolux) getting into it, its starting to seem like its a feature people are LOOKING for...

If you wanna surf the interent in the kitchen you should buy the Icebox
    http://www.beyondconnectedhome.com/

It mounts under an upper cabinet and has a touchscreen, internet, plays music and DVD's and it plays TV broadcasts.

    Thats just me though...

    : )

  • "Please HAL open the door. I want my Haggen Dazs. HAL. Open the DOOR!"

    "No Dave...you're getting fat."

  • Ah Master! The Icebox looks nice. Just what I'm looking for. All I really need is a monitor that would allow me to play the Good Eats from my DVR. Then I could follow along with Alton Brown as he goes.
    Pause.
    Rewind.
    Restart.
Delicious meal AND a learning experience (that's why the geek in me likes Good Eats.)

  • Yikes, just checked the price of the Icebox. $2K! I think I could build one for half that (if not cheaper!) Simple micro case, mount it underneath a cupboard, add a SWEET drop down LCD, and I'd still be half priced?

  • And that isn't much mark up either. We used to sell them at the appliance store i worked at (i say we used to sell them, i mean we had it on the floor and we showed people, dont think we ever actually SOLD it though).
But cost was close to 1700, way too high for that little thing!

But im betting the refrigerator above is at least $8000, probobly more like $10k.

ninjasmurf, u build one of those and post a DIY; you will be a GOD.

Did anybody notice that for that price you don't even appear to get a freezer?
