From Tipster Jonah:
"Just finished reading my Sunday New York Times. Intersting fact, every electronics ad—Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.—had zero iPods listed...Strange, given that every week, for months now, there have been iPods for sale. I think the big retailers know something we don't."
Of course he is referring to Apple's big, huge, spectacular, somewhat random September 12th press conference. I haven't been keeping up with the big boy electronic ads weekly (Gawker keeps me locked up in a dungeon with nothing to look at but a computer screen and the funnies), so I can't confirm this iPod suspicion either way. What do all you beautiful, intelligent, somewhat free on the weekends readers think? Let's kick off the ridiculous amount of Apple related polls for press conference week!

I'm not saying a disagree, but..
Wouldn't retailers with a a ton of possible "old" style iPods want to run ads with this potentially being the last week they can sell them for full price?
The eye of the storm maybe?
If new ipods were coming next week, they would still advertise them... they would try to milk whatever they can milk from them, because people is most likely not going to buy them after the new ones are released (more features, "new" factor, same price!).
If new ones are to be released, retailers would have to lower the price of the old ones after that release.. so they would try to sell as much as they can with the "old" prices.
Just a thought
Maybe all of their iPods were abducted by Steve Jobs and a team of ninjas overnight and they have no more left to sell.
Back to school sales...
Actually, on circuit city's website both iPods are (slightly) on sale, for $279 and $379 for the 30 and 60GB versions. Even the U2 edition is on sale.

Maybe it's because iPods are selling themselves and non-Apple DAPs have higher margins for the stores in question?
Apple's press conference on September 12th is believed to announce a new iPod. I have no doubt that they will bring a new iPod into their mainstream. First of all, it's been about a year since the new iPods came out, and nothing is new about them anymore. Second, on September 7th, Apple's "Multifunction hand held device" patent was published, just before the conference. The patent includes: touch screen, full screen display, multitasking capabilities, pressure or force sensing devices, image sensor, touch gestures, differentiating between light and hard touches, speakers, wireless communications, and much much more. I think that they will introduce a new touch screen iPod video that in one full screen, with a touch-screen click wheel that disappears after you use it and comes back on when you touch the screen.

iPods were never on sale they were always advertised at the same national price all they were doing was giving away giftcards and free cases ,fm transmiters ,and all sorts of cheap crappy stuff at a compusa i saw they have some suffle stuff from apple on the clearence table i ask the manager and they said there was no mistake
Goddamn, they'd better announce this new iPod I've been holding out on since mine broke in JUNE.
Gosh, who knows. Everytime Apple says there will be an announcement the question is "Will there be a new iPod!?!"
It seems logical that w/ Amazon launching their downloadable movie site that the deals have been worked out and iTunes music store is ready to it also. It also makes sense that an iPod designed for movies would launch at the same time.
There was also some story (here or elsewhere, I forget) about some guy (yeah, just a guy) going into the Nike store to look at their Nano/Nike products and was told that they did have any and wouldn't until the middle of the month. Does that mean anything? Who knows.
You could have gotten a much better response and an answer to your poll had you asked, "How many of you purchased your iPod due to a newspaper ad?". The fact is, the target audience of a newspaper is quite opposite those of an iPod user.
Unless of course, they've come out with some geriatric version with large type and hearing aid buds.
Smells like an alien conspiracy. I better go put on my tin-foil hat and huddle in the basement. oh, crap. I live in California. Homes don't HAVE basements here. Crap...
I just checked my Sunday ads, and while plenty of iPod accessories and speakers were still advertised, not a single iPod was present.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that the big stores know something we don't, but I'm sure they're smart enough to realize that if a new iPod is announced on Tuesday, the pricing scheme for all other iPods will most likely change. Why advertise a 30gb iPod w/video for $299 today, when it's price could very well be $249 a couple days from now?
Seeing that Apple released a new ipod every year since its induction, the new ipod theory might not be too far off.
I think I'm gonna pee myself with Tivo, Nintendo and Apple all making big statements this week. I obviously need to get another job, too.
I agree with davidfbecker. Crap! I have no basement either!
"I think the big retailers know something we don't"
It's not the retailers who decide to put ipods in the ad. Companies like Apple pay the retailers a lot of money to advertise there product. So Apple decided to take a week off from the advertising game. It could be because of the press conference or they could be just messing w/ us. Who knows whats gona happen?! Either way this is gona be a big week coming up.
My sources tell me a new Nano is going to drop on Tuesday...
did you guys not hear about the patent that apple published a couple days ago? it included TONS of touch screen type of stuff. By the way, who doesnt want a new ipod? its been a year since a new ipod came out... i think apple would like a new toy this year...
i work at radioshack and they normally keep us stocked with ipods but we havent recieved a boosting shipment in 2 weeks..
/fuel the fire
// hoping for the widescreen
I'm in Malaysia and seeing plenty of iPod ads in the papers. You guys must be sending all of them over here. Too bad the prices aren't getting marked down any.. >(
I write ads for Circuit City and Best Buy. I can't tell you my name, just call me deep throat. I was told not to say anything, but I feel so guilty. The public has got to know... the iPods are NOT - I repeat - NOT on sale this week.
engadget is sporting pics of the banner from the big apple show and they have what appear to be a video iPod on them. Authenticity not confirmed, but it looks pretty realistic (upgraded GUI too).
Man. Ever since my 60gig iPod died n me, and I got out from under the Apple jackboot, I've really come to see just how stupid everyone's obsession with Apple is. Now that I've bought an MP3 player that is leaps and bounds better than the iPod, it really brings to light how mesmerized every one is by the pearly white giant.
Sigh...to be the underdog.
It really is pretty sad isn't it. I wouldn't buy one just so I can continue stealing music off of Kazaa. Things will really get interesting for those paying customers when Microsoft tries to lebow into the game.
wohho: lebow my eggo!
Wohho, you should know that iTunes works with any mp3s...including ones from Kazaa.
But iPod still suck.
Apple always strike when no one expects! so I am sure that they perform spurious acts to get people to add comments on sites like this!
I was in the Apple store in Cambridge MA last night, and noticed that there were also no Airport base stations for sale.
Don't belive the images you see! I could render up a photoshop image a new ipod in 5 minutes that could look real...
because apple control all the pricing and pays for helps pay for advertisments in retail stores adds. Apple determines when something is going to be in the add.
