The new daylight saving time rules that Congress passed in 2005 could screw with many of your precious gadgets. DST starts three weeks earlier than last year, on March 11, and ends one week later than before, on November 4. While not pulling a Henny-penny quite yet, analysts are warning people to make sure to grab any updates for their gadgets lest they be an hour off schedule. Smartphone users are particularly vulnerable since they need to update both their phone and computer in order to keep their schedules events on time.
There's already a bunch of reports of IT managers having a hell of a time trying to update all the machines they're responsible for. Combine that with the fact that the average BlackBerry-toting businessman can't be bothered to download and install updates (they're too busy making money), and we could have a very interesting few days. Then again, there were predictions of death and destruction during that whole Y2K thing and that panned out smoothly.

It's actually not as bad as it seems. We have over 15k BB's here and our patch is going out today. Sent wirelessly over the BES will take 15 min, but! we can only do 100 BB's at a time. If we try to do all the BB's then our servers will get bogged to hell.
Y2K?
Or would that be Y2K7?
BES is a beautiful thing. You can push out anything you need to. Like security settings...
OH NOES!!1! IT'S Y2K7!!!! AHHHHH!!!!
Let's be real people, this isn't a huge deal and only people who are 'too good for updates' (like old people) are going to be affected.
And even if you are affected.... it's an HOUR. Seriously, what's the worst that could possibly happen? People are an hour late to meetings? A few people miss some flights? This isn't CHAOS, it's mild inconvenience.
Well, that's not true, what about all those devices, such as watches, clocks, those $20 organizers, that have built-in calenders with DST settings, that cannot be updated?
Not that I have any of those devices...LOL.
Most people will manually set at least one chronometer and will realize that the others are off.
Come on people, we're evolved to deal with famine, flood, and saber-toothed cats with our giant brains. I think we can handle it.
this daylight saving time thing is stupid. we should all be like arizona & ditch it.
Aren't all clocks on cell phones and smart phones kept up by the wireless network? No update needed!! Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm only half geek...
Fortunately this change doesn't stop us from changing the time back manually on afflicted devices.
If it isn't an option then you're in trouble, and trouble is going to be an hour late by your clock.
I'm with pepe. Screw the farmers and schoolkids. Just say No to DST.
I think JAG42's right - most devices (phones at least) are default-set to automatically update time settings by the network...now we just have to make sure our mobile switches are broadcasting the correct time...
EVERYBODY PANIC!!!
DST was implemented to save electricity during the warmer months. These things I'm not so worried about. Anything that relies on Kerberos authentication and isn't patched properly... well... that's gonna be a problem, and one I'm wondering how many people have throught through :)
BEWARE THE TIDES OF MARCH 11!
Hell hath the thou thus thems there! Thaya though thoo!
What about my watch I just bought? I just splurged on an $80 atomic watch and now it won't work right? They better have an update or replace it free of charge.
GEEK DREAM JOB --
9 months later the Department of Energy must report on the impact on energy conservation of moving the daylight savings time date.

I'm with Pepe the King Prawn up there (well, kinda, seeing as how I live in Arizona).
The only downside to living in Arizona and having to deal with everyone else being on DST is the fact that all of the shows you watch on cable or satellite TV or listen to on radio (that originate outside AZ), online or on XM/the Dog change times twice a year.
I'm figuring that for the most part, Arizona will be safe for this mess, since most of our electronics like VCRs/TiVos and computers have the option to disable DST, so it's already a moot point. But at the same time, all those $25 atomic clocks that DON'T have a DST bypass switch already spend the summers set to the Pacific time zone anyway.
Got it covered! I use a MAC! Done and Done!
Ya MAC...you forgot they have yet to invent anything new.
Thank you for using the word "lest." Why doesn't anyone use it anymore? It is so much better than saying "so that (blank) should not."
As far as congress deciding to screw with time and thus my gadgets--what the hell?
Yeah it is a big deal in a corporate environment. We're busting ass on this one. The only pushable patches are XP and 2003 Server. Win2000 is manual (server) and NT isn't even going to have a fix. We also have BES and that's no biggie. Also a few exchange servers ... and if you use outlook that is where it's really going to eff things up - all scheduled meeting/appointments - if you don't apply the patches in the right order. That's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Luckily here at home the Vista goodness is running and that patch is built in.
