You've heard of e-ink devices, like the Sony Librie, or e-reader, or whatever. But you've never seen a real working prototype of an electronic reader based on a flexible e-paper, that rolls up like a scroll. And you've never seen a video of said device being explained by a Norwegian named Hans to an Austrailian guy named Max...Mad Max. Whatever, I don't care what his real name is. What we care about is the prototype's 5-inch screen that runs at 320 by 240 pixels. The screen, by E-Ink corporation, only uses power to change states, so battery life is measured in page turns. Vid, after the jump.

It's great to finally see a working prototype of thie "E-Paper" everybody's been making "Concepts" for. Now it's more then just "Oh if this technology existed we could do something cool with it!" This is pretty exciting, and i'm glad that they've got this done. They make a color version of this and give it some extra features, it'll make a killing.
Sony is sitting in a corner somewhere, flogging themselves like that albino monk from the Da Vinci code.
any idea on pricing? available in the US?
the technology is very cool, but i'm not sure about the rest of this particular design. still, impressive.
I have to question the durability of the screen of the "paper" itself...
It looked to me that when it was closed there was still a segment of the "paper" exposed...hopefully this is not an oversight that makes it to market.
I love seeing things I read about 5 or 10 years ago actually come to fruition.
Looks like concepts I've seen in PopSci for years.
Now where is my robotic sex partner, dammit.
Why wouldn't you want a bit of screen exposed, Hanzo? What if the device could play MP3s? What if it was built into a cellphone? There's a thousand reasons why you'd still want to see some screen even when it was closed. Past that, the first time the screen on my iPod broke I was wishing it was made of something not made of glass.
I LOVE THIS DEVICE, or atleast the potential it shows, i'd perfer a larger version, say... 10" or 15" if its rollable then it would be very transportable. my 1 gripe is that refresh rate was horrible... i'd tollerate a refresh rate like that if it had color but at b/w at that low a refresh :(
But then again the whole power only per page turn is wicked.
I"d love to see newspapers replaced by an e-subscribtion to one of these :) no more waste paper and also cheaper for the newspaper company, no printing just upload to the site and all the devices sync :)
put this together with the new lithium paper batterys thats some endless possibilities :)
Low refresh rate doesn't matter if you're just using it to read texts.
There's NO refresh rate. It just changes when you flip 'pages' then it's static. It's not a TV.
bigtimes - You don't want an exposed screen to get scratched when you put it into your pocket with your keys. It needs to have some sort of protection when its closed.
Like a carrying case? I'd get one for it anyway.
Is it just me or is this exactly like the earthlink communicator from the show Earth Final Conflict?
I'll be the first in line when those things come out...
Erm, Hans Driessen is a Dutch, not Norwegian, member of the Philips family! Nice idea, crappy design, yet.
This is more like it. Now if it were only that black, brushed stainless steel that we see on the Aopen minipc. that would be sweet.
throw in a lifetime subscription to all the newspapers & magazines, wifi, wimax, bluetooth, evdo, gprs, dap functionality, 1TB flash on board, and built-in upgradeable 171-in-one card reader and I'll buy it, but only if it's under $200.
seriously though, I'd like something like the iliad or the sony reader but tougher, with a metal case. and not so expensive. and that phillips design is in landscape mode, i'd prefer 'portrait' with the main body of the unit on the left (taller than wider like a book)
Very, very exciting! Ever since I heard about it last year (right here on Gizmodo), I've been really keeping my eyes peeled for progress on this technology. Nice to see its' gotten this far!
I think it's too early to judge the design and look as it is still in the conceptual phase. I'm sure this is just a design prototype to get the idea working and the final marketed design will be WAY different from this.
Welcome to the land of the Jetsons, people!
I don't care how much it costs!
I just want my Global, damnit!
