"When arcade machines boot, many will preform a self test, part of which is visual in nature. These come in various shapes and sizes. Some are for video calibration (convergence grids, color patterns, etc), while others show a tile map of sprites used in the game. These test screens can last a millisecond, or flash through a sequence of visual items that last several seconds.
