TomTom One: Giz's First Grope, With Pictures

one%203-4%20new%20york.jpgI'm really good at getting lost, and I'm always broke. Which is why I really appreciate budget-y GPS systems like the TomTom ONE (their caps, not my Tourettes). For the 30 minutes I had to play with it, I thought it was a pretty decent set. Some details, and every picture we could find, after the jump.

Basically, it uses the same software as the TomTom 910. That means it's one of the most flexible GPS interfaces out there, and one of the only ones easy enough to use while you're weaving through rushhour (Which puts it on par with Garmin). One thing I missed was text to speech, for reading off street names right before you have to turn. And for units of this size, only the twice-as-pricey Garmin Nuvi series has that feature. The TomTom ONE does have a great accessory for the car, though, that Garmin can't match. The suction mount—no joke— is awesome. While most are really bulky, almost bigger than the Units themselves, this one is both tiny, really strong, but at the same time, easy to take off the windshield.

(Yes, suction mount. Get over it.)

  • The suction mount would be easier to get over if it wasn't illegal in several states (California included). Otherwise this unit looks great, especially in terms of pricing (list is $499 compared to $857.13 [?!] for the Nuvi 350).

  • $857.14 for a 350? I got a nuvi *360* (adds Bluetooth support) last week for $688 @ PCNation. So far so great! Just need to find a cradle or something so I can attach it to a mounting bracket on my dash instead of the suction cup.

  • Finally an electronic device that is cheaper in Europe than in the U.S. (~ CHF 450.- = $360) :-)

The TomTom ONE is great, by the way. It teaches Garmin a well deserved lesson. They could be here now if they had noticed the existence of USB in 1998 instead of 2005.

  • List price on the 350, as I said, is $857.13 (according to Garmin's web site), retail is around $600. List on the 360 is $964.27, retail is around $700. The retail price of the TomTom ONE should be around $425 based on the retail prices of other TomTom units currently on the market.

If you don't understand the difference between list and retail prices try Googling it before posting.

  • I love the Tomtom ONE, but my dog chewed the edge of the suction cup mount. It used to work great, but now it doesn't work at all. I've looked online, and find several aftermarket mounts, suction and otehrwise, that look really bulky. TomTom's website doesn't have the same thing that came with my unit listed for sale. Neither does anybody else! Any help?

    Thanks

  • The TomTom One is a well-featured and impressive basic GPS navigation receiver at very affordable price point - $299 from most retailers in the US.

However, I'm not sure why everyone is cooing about this "svelte" suction mount...I've had my TomTom One for a week now and the "new and improved" minimalist mount hasn't been able to support the unit on my windshield for more than a half hour. No matter what...it even released when I had positioned the unit so that the dashboard was providing all of the vertical support!

If you purchase this unit, be prepared to pony up for an aftermarket mount that won't continually hurl you unit to the floor. TomTom is shipping me a replacement mount...that should arrive within a (blistering fast) two to three weeks. I can hardly contain my excitement...in the meantime, I've ordered a beefy cluster mount made by RAM which is also going to hold my cell phone and iPod.
