We just got the chance to play around with AMD's newest quad core system, the Phenom RD790 and a pair of ATI HD2900XT graphics processors. There's a whole lot of cooling going on, thanks to John Woo's new game Stranglehold. AMD is still mum on pricing and final specs, though they did reaffirm their desire to ship this sucker in "early Q4" of this year, so like October? The system managed the Havoc physics engine with ease, jumping into sepia-toned "tequila" time and into a zoom mode that gave a bullet's eye view of the action. Lack of specs notwithstanding, the experience was mesmerizing, right up to the point where one of the bad guys in the game took a bullet in the nuts, and I actually felt his pain. Wanna see?

that would suck to not have a woman in your life....
such a thing of beauty!
I'm getting a little tired of bullet time. It was cool in Fear, but how many people am I supposed to believe have the ability to slow down time?
...there could have been better games to illustrate the orgasmic experience of a Quad Core.
Bullet Time - Max Payne invented it, and I've yet to see a better ingame iteration of it.
As a longtime fan of both ATI and AMD, I want to be really excited about this.. but their latest products have been less than stellar. The who HD2xxx line stinks almost as bad as the GeForceFX did. It's a shame. But, I will hold out a bit of hope for the phenom platform, just 'cause I'd love to have AMD in my gaming rig again.
Havoc physics engine? Does that mean all the physics was handled by the GPU's? If so, what were the quad-cores doing?
Any note on the relative performance of Phenom compared to current chips?
And finally, I like the way AMD thinks everybody, including "everyday Web browsers" will have a reason to go quad-core (see the last image). Just like homer needing a top-of-the-line machine to check e-mail and surf the web -- will Phenom be the chip astronauts use to do their taxes?
Hello? HELLO? DID YOU GUYS SAY SOMETHING? I COULDN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF ALL THESE FANS!
If that comes out second half of 2007......I'll eat whatever Jason Chen has down his pants on that particular day!
yeah but can it run metal gear solid pc in hardware mode?
@Saboth: I actually have that case and if you add good quiet 120mm fans it's really not that loud.
The lighting on that thing is pretty nice - though pretty useless once you put on the left side panel which covers everything.
I look forward to seeing benchmarks of this, but I highly doubt it'll compare to Intel's best.
I said out loud WTF when i saw that.
OMG that computer pwns
I love how they made use of all of those fans. Im guessing that the fans on the side is the door to mod your computer.
The computer pwns. I would buy it. Even tho im not a fan of AMD i'll buy it.
@Jumpking04: I dont know what everyones talking about. Thats a terrible system. First of all, its already crippled by using the current generation of AMD processors since Intel beats them unbelievably silly (that is, until the Phenoms come out, in which they will take the lead until Nehalem is released), and the HD cards are horribly inefficient, and completely suck at AA. Ill take 2 GTX's and a recently reduced Q6600 oc'd for less money than what this is, with much better performance.
so how much are they overpricing, i mean, selling these for? AMD doesn't even have a quad core on the market that a consumer can buy so I think I'll stick with intel. especially after they just released those new core 2 duos and the quadcore.
Where's the console fanboy to chime in with the requisite "Just buy a 360!"?
That an insane amount of hardware, not to mention fans.
But this gets me drooling. Probably could run crysis like silk.
Once the price tag comes along though, my mouth will soon close. Along with my dreams.
With all those fans I wonder how much thrust this case generates? Would you have to brace it to prevent it from blowing itself off your desk?
I always thought LEDs inside a case were the dumbest thing... They produce huge amounts of heat on their own, why would you add a heating element that you need to cool when it's something you can't see? Don't remind me about the "Pimp My Rig" attitude with plexi sides. It's like spinner wheels, they're kinda cool on someone else's ride, but they're just added weight and wind resistance.
@MYSELF!!!
Didnt realise this was a phenom system. I figured because of the 4 fans, it was for sure a 4x4. My appologies.
Why arnt
Benchmarks, please!!!!???
I have that case myself as well. Amazingly expandable though kinda heavy once I installed everything in it. Also, fairly expensive for a computer case ($250).
Ah the Stacker is such a cool case, but do mine eyes decieve me, or was that really a case fan where the CPU should be? AMD currently sucks and a large majority of AMD motherboards suck. I really hope AMD can do something worthwhile so intel will keep lowering their price. In the meantime, I'll keep my nVidia + intel box
The sad thing is it needs all those fans because the HD 2900XTs are such hot, power guzzling bastards. Intel's 3.33Ghz Core2 Quadro will be out around the same time, that and a pair of 8800GTXs will DESTROY this system. AMD is in BIG trouble.
@qbrad:
LEDs produce huge amounts of heat? huh?
Anyone who compares a GeForce FX to the X2X00 series probably never had an FX :P. I mean yeah the X2900 is disappointing performace wise from a high end perspective but at least it works in the latest DirectX (unlike the FX at the time). The FX was literally so bad at DX9 that the software companies programmed a cavet into the DirectX detection schemes of their games forcing the FX back down to DX8.
The FX might just be one of the biggest disasters of a video card ever.
At least the X2900 has price to performance going for it.
Come on AMD, get it together. I do not want to buy Intel this year.
