AndroidBoy Gives the G1 Some Overdue Emulation Fun
OK, a Game Boy emulator might not be in the same league as an NES or SNES emulator, but seeing as it's the first real emulator for the Android platform, G1 owners will have to take what they can get at this point. Available in the Android Marketplace now, the AndroidBoy control scheme looks like that of the first iPhone NES emulator, with virtual controls at the bottom of the screen. The lack of an on-screen D-pad, however, has me assuming the trackball is used in that capacity instead. In any case, if you needed a reason to revisit Game Boy classics such as Kirby's Dreamland or Link's Awakening, I think this will do just fine. [IntoMobile] -

Open Source GamePack Lets You Bake a Game Boy From Scratch
If you're possessed of some serious disposable income, electrical engineering chops, mountains of free time and a passion for open source and vintage gaming, you might be the kind of person who would want to buy the GamePack. For about $250, Liquidware will send you a full build kit for his open source Game Boykillertribute. Unfortunately, the "Game" part will be up to you — the Arduino-based handheld has only been tested running very basic code. These points aside, the specs are impressive, with an OLED screen, Lithium Ion battery, and built-in rumble capability — not to mention that fact that it'll fill the gap in your nerdbelt between your NES buckle and your OpenMoko Neo Freerunner quite nicely. iGameboy Theme: If the iPhone Were Around Two Decades Ago
Apple did a passable job with the iPhone UI. But let's face it: We need some tough love nostalgia injected into the overly polished device. Luckily for us, there's the iGameboy theme for the iPhone. At last, we'll be able to cover the universally stylish black background with the trademark B12 vitamin-pee green backdrop of our first beloved handheld gaming system. Available in button and buttonless versions, the skin is free, but you'll have to jailbreak that iPhone first. [MacThemes via GoNintendo] -

History Proves the iPhone Will Never Win the Handheld Gaming Wars
Super Monkey Ball is arguably the current zenith of iPhone tilt gaming. The gameplay involves navigating your bebubbled monkey through a series of elevated, edgeless mazes without letting him fall—it's fun, if repetitive. Nintendo’s Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is similar: The player guides Kirby through mazes using tilt-sensitive control, collecting stars along the way. Both games are entertaining, and both won positive reviews for nearly identical control schemes. So why is Monkey Ball getting all the attention? Well, for one, Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is only available for the the Game Boy Color. Oh, and it was released in 2001. More » -

FC Mobile Portable NES, Because One Screen Was Once Enough
Since Nintendo's patent has dropped on the NES, we're finally seeing all of the Nintendo gear that we could only dream about as kids. The FC Mobile is such a product, bringing a Nintendo Entertainment System into your hands. Reading real cartridges, 8-bit glory can either shine on its 2.4" display or be outputted to a television—all while fueled by classic AA batteries (sure, lithium ion would be more convenient, but it wouldn't capture the battery-burning nostalgia of yore). If you refuse to partake in emulation or your heart yearns for a simpler era, the FC Mobile will run about $40 on eBay. It's a shame the controls aren't just right. [eBay via technabob] -

Nintendo Briefly Nudges Sony Out of Japan's Top 10 Companies
Today, during a surge in Nintendo's stock price, the company managed to outvalue the entire Sony Corporation for a spell. It didn't last long, but Nintendo's brief climb is a clear sign of the company's Wii-eminence. Already strong in the handheld market–just count how many Game Boy variants you own–the stock price was further helped by the power of Wii, which has outsold Sony's PS3 3 to 1 in Japan, and 2 to 1 in the US. Nintendo fanboys: Don't pop out that champagne yet. The PS3 hit Sony hard last year, financially, but the company, and the platform, are on target for a much better 2007. More » -
