You cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Oooooh, look out! I'm going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!

I always liked the Wicked Game Boy of the West a lot more than that stupid Dorothy. Some frenchies thought otherwise and have desecrated a few of Nintendo's mighty handhelds to honor its 20th Anniversary. Art, schmart. Leave the poor Game Boys alone, and go read the definitive 20th Anniversary of Nintendo's Game Boy timeline instead.
What Would Happen If We Tried to "Play" This NES Emulator Cartridge Casemod?

Finally, an NES cartridge casemod I can get behind without weeping uncontrollably. This one houses a complete library of NES games, uses the original buttons, and hides inside the Super Mario/Duck Hunt combo cartridge. But wait, there's more:

There's also an mp3 player, movie player and an FM radio receiver. The video out is also intact, meaning this little guy can be used to play on the big screen.

Games in action below:

This one is cleaner, boasts more features, and plays Game Boy games too, so it gets the nod today. Nice work.

Oh, and the answer to the headline question, by the way, is unicorns. They would exist. [Ben Heck Forums via technabob]

ODROID Gaming Handheld Runs Android; Now Available for Pre-Order

No, it's not a new Wonderswan, it's the ODROID. This curious little gaming handheld has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, Android 1.5 OS, 512MB of RAM, and the same 833MHz Samsung CPU as the iPhone 3GS.

A developer version is now up for pre-order, and includes a charger cable, serial console debugging board, and batteries. It costs the equivalent of about $320, and should be delivered by November 5—ahead of standard $250 models arriving sometime in December.

The device has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a mini-HDMI port to connect it to your TV. There's no 3G, though there's a chance you could use a 3G dongle with the USB port.

It's a cute little ugly duckling, but what 5-star, compelling games does Android have outside of MAME? And while it's easy to imagine that better games will come as more Android phones hit the streets...why not just buy one of those instead?
I'm taking solace in the fact that this mod might be used to store Game Boy ROMs for an emulator. I hope. And no, it no longer plays games—that's a sticker.
This Is How Two Girls Play Gameboy When They Really Love Each Other

As I got into the subway, I saw these two really cool blonde girls playing Gameboy together in the weirdest and funniest way.

Sitting tight together, head to head, one was frantically rubbing her thumb against the Gameboy D-pad, while the other clicked the buttons. They were laughing, playing constantly, and actually having loads all fun all the way to Manhattan. I don't know what game they were playing, but it was a really sweet moment to see two people enjoying themselves in such a silly and careless way.

This Nintendo Ad Out-Pervs Even My Honed Sensiblities

It's rare that, as an adult, I look at a sexually suggestive joke and don't quite get it. But it's even rarer that the ad would be from Nintendo's marketing department.

This vintage Nintendo ad was designed be Leo Burnett and ran in UK magazines like Loaded, FHM, and Viz. Apparently, I'm not alone in not quite grasping the ad's intention (I, for instance, interpret the ad as suggesting that preteen rapists may find the Game Boy Pocket an unnecessary distraction from early jail time) as the Advertising Standards Authority eventually pulled the ads because they "subjugated and humiliated" a restrained woman.

Besides, a better ad would be if the woman, subjugated and humiliated on the bed, was completely intent on playing the Game Boy Pocket. Right now, she's just horrified to be involved. We can all see that in real life. So what's done is done. But given that the world's greatest iPhone case is hidden somewhere in the depths of Akihabara, this runner up from Etsy might make a solid alternative.

Machine sewn from various colors of felt (yet lined in simple black), this $15 Gameboy iPhone case was just listed back on July 2nd but is already "sold out."

Still, the site is probably worth a bookmark if you're interested. As soon as Etsy user toastkawaii's hands stop bleeding from high demand, we're (not) sure she'll restock.
PediSedate: The Only Game Boy Accessory Designed to Drug Children

This is a Game Boy hooked up to a nitrous oxide machine. It's called the PediSedate. Nope, nothing sketchy about this.

The PediSedate was designed for dentists, allowing them to distract kids with video games while they were drugged in prep for oral surgery. But hey, why limit it to dentists? You could use this to sedate children for any number of reasons! And with a name like PediSedate, you get all sorts of great ideas right off the bat. I'm so surprised this never caught on.
I wrote to you earlier regarding an urgent business transaction value at the sum of US$30.5m (Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars only) which will be benefiting to you and me, if only you can find this Gameboy iPhone case. I had one in my possession until the 29th April 1996 to date when the president of South Africa Mr. Thabo Mbeki betrayed my trust, took my virginity and robbed me of the beloved screen protector.

He has spent every day since pillaging the countryside and raping the chickens.

I do not know if you got my first Email or not but I need you to notify me if are you willing to work with me in this regards or not. You seem like a chaste, virtuous man or woman. Maybe when tragedy falls behind me, one can move forward, together.

And maybe it's just because I was a corpulent kid, but I find the design quite charming.

Emulating NES/Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Super Famicom and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis titles, the GAME-800 is a crudely controlled but effective looking pocket emulator with a 3.5-inch screen and 4GB of expandable storage. It also doubles as an MPEG4 player, eBook reader (with Chinese/English text to speech) and a low fidelity camera.

The GAME-800 is available now for an $80 import. [China Grabber via technabob]

Rumor: Nintendo Planning on Its Own Dsi App Store

Nintendo might be planning on taking on the iPhone and iPod Touch with an app download service of its own, and has been encouraging developers to come up with app-like content for the DSi.

The Dsi—at least the Japanese version—currently connects to the DS Shop and DSi Ware, Nintendo's bite-sized gaming store. But according to Developer, the company is allegedly hoping to get shorter-form non-gaming stuff on the device as well-things that could turn your Dsi into a personal lifestyle gadget, rather than just an entertainment one.

I guess it'd also be a way for the Dsi to really differentiate itself from the DS Lite. While the DSi is definitely more gadgety (what with camera and audio player), many were underwhelmed thanks to what they were losing.

There's only a week until Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's keynote, so we expect to hear more then. Artists come from all over the world to perform electronic music created with Game Boys, Commodore 64s, and Famicoms, and it's more than just bleeps and bloops: this stuff is really fun.

Chiptune musicians mod archaic game systems from Atari, Commodore, and Nintendo, among others, to be used as musical instruments. The music sounds a lot more varied than I would have expected, from hard-pumping dance electro to atmospheric pieces, not to mention the workshops, screenings, and presentations that are included in the Festival.

The documentary Reformat the Planet, which debuted earlier this year at South by Southwest, will be shown at the festival, and the trailer here does more than I could to describe how cool this is. The Blip Festival's tickets are $15 a night, and held at the Bell House (149 7th Street, Brooklyn).

And Exploded GameBoy by gamepaused is just enough to thwart my vision for a respectable wardrobe for a little longer.

I haven't disassembled a GameBoy as of late, but the deconstruction appears anatomically correct, even making room for the screw holes embedded in the plastic case. The pea under my fashion mattress, however, is that gamepaused.net logo on the battery. Something about ".net" just leaves the taste of free trade show shirt in my mouth. $23.

OK, a Game Boy emulator might not be in the same league as an NES or SNES emulator, but seeing as it's the first real emulator for the Android platform, G1 owners will have to take what they can get at this point. Available in the Android Marketplace now, the AndroidBoy control scheme looks like that of the first iPhone NES emulator, with virtual controls at the bottom of the screen. The lack of an on-screen D-pad, however, has me assuming the trackball is used in that capacity instead. In any case, if you needed a reason to revisit Game Boy classics such as Kirby's Dreamland or Link's Awakening, I think this will do just fine. For about $250, Liquidware will send you a full build kit for his open source Game Boy <strike>killer</strike> tribute. Unfortunately, the "Game" part will be up to you — the Arduino-based handheld has only been tested running very basic code. These points aside, the specs are impressive, with an OLED screen, Lithium Ion battery, and built-in rumble capability — not to mention that fact that it'll fill the gap in your nerdbelt between your NES buckle and your OpenMoko Neo Freerunner quite nicely.
iGameboy Theme: If the iPhone Were Around Two Decades Ago

But let's face it: We need some tough love nostalgia injected into the overly polished device. Luckily for us, there's the iGameboy theme for the iPhone. At last, we'll be able to cover the universally stylish black background with the trademark B12 vitamin-pee green backdrop of our first beloved handheld gaming system. Available in button and buttonless versions, the skin is free, but you'll have to jailbreak that iPhone first.
History Proves the iPhone Will Never Win the Handheld Gaming Wars

Super Monkey Ball is arguably the current zenith of iPhone tilt gaming. The gameplay involves navigating your bebubbled monkey through a series of elevated, edgeless mazes without letting him fall—it's fun, if repetitive. Nintendo’s Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is similar: The player guides Kirby through mazes using tilt-sensitive control, collecting stars along the way. Both games are entertaining, and both won positive reviews for nearly identical control schemes. So why is Monkey Ball getting all the attention? Well, for one, Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is only available for the the Game Boy Color. Oh, and it was released in 2001.

To be fair, Monkey Ball has improved a lot on its spiritual forebear, with lush, fully 3D graphics and over 100 well-designed levels. It superficially reflects a few generational steps forward in handheld gaming. One thing that hasn’t changed is the control mechanism. Consider this IGN review of Kirby from April of 2001:

This tilting feature is an integral part of the gameplay, and it really makes Kirby original and a lot of fun. The designers built the game around this sensor instead of putting a sensor into the game, and it really shows... Since you cannot zoom Kirby around the mazes without screwing up, patience is needed. Of course, you can't take your sweet time—the clock is ticking.

This could just as easily describe the experience of rolling AiAi around on your iPhone. The tilt sensor technology, built into the GBC cartridge, was functionally flawless, even by iPhone standards. The tilt-sensing scheme surfaced in a few more (equally impressive and well received) games, but none ventured too far from the navigation paradigm of Tilt 'n' Tumble. Over the next few years, position-sensitive handheld gaming faded into relative obscurity.

At least, until now. Tilt gaming is now lauded by some as the future of portables, with developers and engineers making inconsistent claims about how powerful and exciting the iPhone is as a platform, even throwing out very favorable comparisons to the PSP and the DS. But does the iPhone really bring anything new to the table? The answer, as you’ve probably guessed by now, is no. Absolutely not.

Think of it this way: The best implementation of iPhone tilt control is conceptually identical to a seven-year-old Game Boy title, which itself was based on the old wooden marble-in-a-labyrinth puzzles that have been around since, well, who knows? The iPhone doesn’t have the buttons of the Game Boy (or DS or PSP), and touchscreen control overlays don’t provide the feedback they need to be adequate substitutes. (Anyone who has played any of NES/SNES/Genesis jailbreak emulators can attest to this.) Perhaps most significantly, the iPhone doesn’t address the shortcomings of tilt gaming that were helpfully pointed out to them in nearly every review of Kirby. Consider again the 2001 IGN review:

You're limited to where and how you can play the game, really... I've played the game outside and in a hotel room with no problems, but on the plane it was a little difficult because of the position you have to hold the system — it's not exactly a game you can sit in your most comfortable position and play.

And another, from the New York Times:

Children who play Kirby in the back seat of the car will learn to loathe potholes and quick turns, which can make Kirby spin out of control.

In respect to the limited locations in which you can play tilt games, the GBC cartridge system is actually superior to the iPhone, as it automatically recalibrates at the start of every game, a feature that Monkey Ball could stand to include.

A portable gaming device that necessitates a certain type of location and position to play isn’t truly portable. Anyone who has tried to play any of the iPhone’s tilt games in a moving car, bus or even train will tell you that slight acceleration in any direction can make sensitive games like Crash Bandicoot Racing and Monkey Ball almost unplayable—and what good are handheld games if you can’t play them in transit?

Since the launch of the app store, nobody has come forward with a truly exciting and original implementation of tilt control. The iPhone has demonstrated that is it capable of retreading tilt gaming territory quite well, but that’s about it.

It sounds harsh to deem iPhone gaming a mere novelty, but until a developer steps forward with something profoundly revolutionary it may be just that. For the most accurate summation of the iPhone’s tilt gaming, don’t listen to John Carmack’s breathless speculation, or Scott Forstall’s eery, glossy-eyed presentations. Look back again, this time to Gamespot:

Yes, Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is a gimmicky game, but it's a gimmicky game done well.

For Nintendo, handheld tilt gaming was a fanciful tangent; when the genre was exhausted, they were able to retreat to traditional controls. This option is unfortunately—and maybe fatally—absent from the iPhone, potentially relegating it to the unfortunate status of a impressive, elaborate gimmick.

After collecting them all, he reset his goal and sold most of them to collect only sealed games, ones in their original blister pack or rare versions (like the special edition Super Mario Bros. box he spent $1200 on).

Since Nintendo's patent has dropped on the NES, we're finally seeing all of the Nintendo gear that we could only dream about as kids. The FC Mobile is such a product, bringing a Nintendo Entertainment System into your hands. Reading real cartridges, 8-bit glory can either shine on its 2.4" display or be outputted to a television—all while fueled by classic AA batteries (sure, lithium ion would be more convenient, but it wouldn't capture the battery-burning nostalgia of yore). If you refuse to partake in emulation or your heart yearns for a simpler era, the FC Mobile will run about $40 on eBay. It's a shame the controls aren't just right.
Glucoboy Makes Blood-Testing (Sort of) Fun With GBA and Online Gaming Rewards

When it comes to diabetes blood-testing the word "fun" does not spring to mind. However, the Glucoboy could change all that by rewarding consistent testing and good results. When the blood glucose meter is combined with a Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS, kids can earn points that will unlock mini-games on the included cartridge or rewards on the GRiP incentive-based web community.

The concept has been around for years, but is only being released now due to a 3 year struggle with Nintendo for approval to manufacture the device. Why Nintendo dragged their feet on this one is a mystery. Do they have something against kids with juvenile diabetes or what? All that aside, the device is now available in Australia for around $260. Plans are in the works to make the Glucoboy available worldwide in the near future.
Game Boy Foot Controller Mod For a Full-Body Music Experience

Musician and Game Boy modding guru Joey Mariano has developed an eight headed, foot pedal monster that allows users to control the buttons of a Game Boy color with their feet. The sequencer hack processes the whole thing into an electronic orchestra of sorts, which could be quite impressive in the hands of a skilled musician.

You can even use macros for executing button combos on a single pedal for more unique sounds. Throw a guitar or a keyboard into your mix and you have the makings of one impressive musical experience. Just don't go overboard and start putting cymbals between your legs or something.
Legend of Zelda stickers and a Halo 3 paint job not getting the message through? Try these Fuzzy Game Boy dice. A Kotaku reader crafted them himself, which means you can't buy them, but they look easy enough to make for a fun day of crafting and sewing with your kids. And that message you're putting out there? "Please, nerdy chicks only." Which isn't all that bad, when you think about it.

Nintendo Briefly Nudges Sony Out of Japan's Top 10 Companies

Today, during a surge in Nintendo's stock price, the company managed to outvalue the entire Sony Corporation for a spell. It didn't last long, but Nintendo's brief climb is a clear sign of the company's Wii-eminence. Already strong in the handheld market–just count how many Game Boy variants you own–the stock price was further helped by the power of Wii, which has outsold Sony's PS3 3 to 1 in Japan, and 2 to 1 in the US. Nintendo fanboys: Don't pop out that champagne yet. The PS3 hit Sony hard last year, financially, but the company, and the platform, are on target for a much better 2007.

Made from a real black & white Game Boy, the buttons have been mapped to the iPod functions for full non-scrollwheel control. A headphone jack sits at the bottom of the unit as well, but the case falls short in that there is no way to charge or sync your iPod through it. And the display face is a bit on the ugly.

For those still craving the retro cool, grab one of your own for $30. Just be sure to note that the case works with Minis and Nanos only, and it may really piss Apple engineers off. – Mark Wilson

I'm normally a stickler for craftsmanship and would traditionally crap all over this mod for looking pretty assy, but I'll hold back because it is an entire PC fitted into an original Gameboy. Using the ultra-compact EPIA PX10000G motherboard, this classic gaming device can now tackle quite a bit more than monochrome Tetris. Ethernet, two USB ports and VGA output are even included. Now work on a getting a screen in there, ASAP. –Travis Hudson

This mod takes away a key feature of the iPod—being small—but makes up for it with a coolness factor. A Gameboy was hacked apart to accommodate an iPod video. It even includes an internal dock connector and the buttons on the Gameboy were wired up to control the iPod. Check out the entire Flickr set below to see more of this mod. –Travis Hudson

I mean come on, a PSP, inside of an older Gameboy, how awesome is that? – Travis Hudson

Nintendo Ready To Retire The GameBoy?

Sad news for GameBoy fans with word that Reggie Fils-Aime expects this to be the last holiday season for the portable game system. He said that he expects young gamers to make the transition to the DS in the coming year. GameBoy, we hardly knew ye.

That doesn't mean that video game publishers will stop supporting the system, however, but it does mean that Nintendo is telling them to get with the program and make some dual screen action post haste. Thankfully, the DS is pretty fantastic in its own right, especially with certain accessories. – Nicholas Deleon
