The DeLighTable by Kloss is a slick, 25-mm-thick coffee table that has a touch surface built in. It reacts to finger touches and glasses being rested on it, creating streams of light as you run your fingers across it, as you can see in the above video.
It doesn't house a computer or anything, so you won't be able to go through your pictures on it, but it's still really cool. It's been in development for a few years now, but it hasn't been available for sale until now, it'll set you back a cool $2,300, which actually seems somewhat reasonable for what you get, and will take four to six weeks to build.
The only real issue I have about it is how it's getting its power, as it has a cord running to the wall that really hurts the sexiness that this thing would bring to your living room. I guess if you have an outlet on the floor you could make it kind of subtle, but there's no real way to escape having a cord visibly snaking out of a leg of your coffee table. It took a few years to make this? If you look, it's clearly a black gel under a layer of plastic (like those toys for infants) with a light underneath it. When something clears the gel off a spot, light shines through. Definitely not worth $2,300. Maybe if it like a touch screen LCD that lit up when you touched it, it would. But this, is just lame.
SNIKT!
I'm waiting for some SiCAF sand-style art.
copyright in the opening title is 2003?
Search YouTube for "iBar". Even the videos there have been posted more than a year ago. Definitely cooler, definitely more high tech than this.
That's sorta pretty awesome. I think there might be a good way to conceal the wire... I like it! Too bad I don't have money for it!
The still image looks makes me think of fingernails on a chalkboard.
waste of time, so I can draw lines with my finger, shit I can do that on my window when the temperature drops here in Canada.
What's the practical use for this, surface looks more practical.
@lafond66: I agree this is lame.. and a larger version of a child's toy...
would this even qualify as a gadget?
@BurstAneurysm: I was thinking Freddy Krueger, ekk! ...9, 10 never sleep again!!! *rocks back and forth in fetal position*
p.s. props for the use of Aphex Twin for the music! :)
How is it worth THAT much? I Should make one of these and post it on Instructables. Like LAFOND66 said, its just gel under plastic. You could use dark or black oil as the gel and glass underneath that is illuminated with LEDs on the outer rim of the glass. (Probably better off using frosted glass for diffusion of the light). And for the top layer just some heavy duty plastic sheeting.
@BurstAneurysm:
to me it looks like fingers playing with chocolate....mmmm chocolate!
How to keep kids on ecstasy busy for hours... wheeeee!
Effect looks cool, overall design not so much.
yea maybe id pay $2300 if it actually had a touchscreen...as opposed to a piece of plastic floating on black gel.
How do I put this?
This is simply the BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY I have ever seen in my life.
