YouTube to Kill Itself by Adding 30-Second 'Bumper' Ads Next Year

So much for YouTube taking the high ground and not sticking annoying bumper ads in front of their clips … that's pretty much their exact plan for making money in 2008. Hey, they've gotta make back that $1.65 billion somehow, right? The plan as of now is to slap 30-second ads in front of clips. It isn't clear if there'll be shorter ads as well, if the ads will go in front of every clip, or if the ads will be skippable. I can tell you one thing: there ain't no way I'm sitting through 30 torturous seconds of advertising for a 15 second video of a guy lighting his farts on fire. Don't blow it, Google. [DirectTraffic]

UPDATE: False alarm, this is an old story and Google has since changed their plans to the overlay ads we reported earlier.

  • *POP*

That's the sound of the youtube bubble bursting.

Now who is going to make youtube 2.0, without crappy bumper ads??? Someone step up to the plate here.

  • Youtube sucks. I can barely stand it. There is waaay too much crap on there.

  • did i also mention how bad video resolution sucks!!!!! GOOGLE DONT DO IT DONT DO IT DONT DO IT YOUR GONNA SCREW YOURSELF

  • Yes the Ad's will tank GooTube! LiveLeak will be the new YouTube. [liveleak.com]

  • all the while Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are laughing all the way to the bank cashing their stocks and options they got from Google....

  • I use stage6 instead of youtube already (except for the vids I can't find on youtube).

It's got very high quality videos, and it doesn't have a 10min limit for normal users

so yeah, Bye Bye Youtube.. :)

  • It tough enough spending more than a few minutes watching youtube stuff, this is going to make it impossible to stand. Now where else can I find some decent vids to keep me entertained?

  • Yes, WHY is the resolution still so bad?? Can someone recommend an alternate free video sharing site with decent resolution? I wouldn't mind a period of buffering to be able to watch a high quality video.

  • I hear that the revenue is to be shared with the content owner. So say I get 100,000 hits on my fart video... that means I will be 1000 bucks in my pocket. I can see some videographers getting a new paying job soon!

  • @yok: K I gotta try that one.

  • Looks like I need to be spending my spare time somewhere else then. I don't pay and I don't watch ads, them is my rules.

  • This sounds VERY stupid. The whole enjoyment of Youtube comes out of getting a link to a video and being able to check it out instantly. This sounds like it would fundamentally disrupt the Youtube experience, and I can foresee many people getting out of there in a hurry.

Ditto on Stage6, except it's still kind of slow sometimes. At least on my connection.

  • Not a problem if they're showing 'premium content' such as the latest TV shows...

I'll be pissed if they put ads on MY stuff I've uploaded. I just wont use them, and someone else will fill the void.

  • @evophoto: 100,000 would probably be closer to $10

  • I'm sticking with Stage 6. It looks good, and for the time being its still free. ^.^

  • It will be a step down in quality, but youtube will still survive as long as they handle it properly. Like was said before, waiting through a 30 second commercial for a 15 second clip is absurd. Waiting through the same commercial for an hour long clip is something else entirely.

While no one will be thrilled, it could still work as long as they apply common sense. Then again, this could also be a sign of them throwing in the towel and milking every penny they can out of it until the unveil "the next big thing".

  • I know Google has to make back the money they spent on youtube but this is just a really bad idea. See you later youtube, 2008 is the year that you will be replaced.

  • YouTube was built on the back of copywritten material. I was amazed when Google plunked down that fat bag-o-cash for it. Although Google rarely makes mistakes YouTube will no doubt go as one of their big ones.

  • google whored itself by doing this with orkut. orkut now resembles a shady neighborhood with all those "intelligent" ad placements.

    Spotted in a Mensa community:

Fine Print: A million monkeys in front of a million typewriters could produce Shakespeare. But if any one monkey attempts to produce an antithesis of logic, out it goes.

Finer Print: to fool google: loan money nigeria food genocide help enlargement botox weight obesity pills need love single personals lonely playboy sticky page channel home shopping addiction strong abs crunches rupture diahrrea tissue brown stain removal lick dog litter carpet

Needless to say, there isn't an ad on that page!

  • Stage6 (stage6.divx.com) has:
    -good amount of videos
    -way higher quality (usually)
-direct downloads (click the little x in the corner)
-Full TV episodes (cartoons and anime, mostly)

    YouTube has:
    -tons of crap videos
    -tons of crap comments

  • But pornotube will still be ad free, right?

  • More thought needs to go into these headlines. The article that is being referenced might be old. The only date I could find is 4/23/2007. I think Google announced that it wasn't going to use the pre-rolls more recently than 4/27. Even if they are using pre-rolls, I'm sure Google isn't going to put 30 second spots in front of 15 second videos or even 1 minute videos. That would be retarded and they know that. More likely, this is only for high-value content for clips that are much longer in length than just a few minutes.

  • It'd be a very bad idea, but then ppl always try to do too much with a "good thing".

  • That's exactly why I'm already making some test on other services. So far, Vimeo, Metacafe e Veoh.

I heard about YouTube trying to insert ads or do several different stuff to increase their incomes or something.

And I think they'll eventually do something. And it's probably not gonna be the end of YouTube, but it will for me at least. I can't be bothered not even with 5 seconds ad, and I pretty much use YouTube because it has no ads.

  • If that happens, good bye YouTube. Unless it's an amazing news story, I never watch videos with those ads.

  • like they need more money...

  • That would kill people like me on dialup. They better not.

  • If they want to use my bandwidth to advertise, the bastards can pay me for it. Why not try this scheme out on Google first, you know, sit through an ad before you can search?
It almost looks as if Page & Brin are letting the accountants (read as Micro$loth mentallity) take over the company... wrong move.

YouTube, RIP, we hardly knew ye.

  • I like YouTube. I find many interesting music videos that otherwise I would not have access to (I have a peculiar taste for music).

Have you guys seen Metacafe's ads?

They are not that obtrusive; they stay the the bottom for a while and you can even dismiss them. I would not mind if YouTube uses the same approach.

  • Did you look at the date on your source? Google already passed up with the idea. They have a new idea.

"The company said late Tuesday that after months of testing various video advertising models, it was ready to introduce a new type of video ad, which it said was unobtrusive and kept users in control of what they saw. The ads, which appear 15 seconds after a user begins watching a video clip, take the form of an overlay on the bottom fifth of the screen, not unlike the tickers that display headlines during television news programs. A user can ignore the overlay, which will disappear after about 10 seconds, or close it. "

  • These same ones I buzz through from youtube's podcast? Annoying but at all the time, I'll stop visiting and clicking. Especially if it is adding 30 seconds to the beginning of each clip and not doing some sort of bottom running ad.

  • My god, why can't you people read?

This news is NOT CORRECT. This news is FIVE MONTHS OLD... which would not qualify it as news anyways.

Now wipe the brown off of your sheep noses and do some research before blindly posting.

  • It was fun while it lasted.

YouTube, you've been great, now don't let the door hit you in the ass.

  • YouTube would not have had the capital to fend off the inevitable heat being generated by Viacom and other such killjoys. Everyone seems down on Google, but YouTube would probably have disappeared on its own without them.

  • Ads overlayed onto user videos sounds a little bit evil, possibly even worse than ads preceding the video.
