Google and TomTom have joined forces to make their products compatible. Thanks to the "Send to GPS" button that Google has added to Google Maps, you can send routes from Google Maps direct to your navigation device via TomTom Home. See how it works in the video below.

I don't get it. Can't you just find that place by just using the TomTom alone?
@thecharlie: You probably could. But if you have the option, google maps on a computer is a heck of a lot easier to use and the search options a lot more powerful then the TomTom interface on it's tiny little screen.
That's pretty neat.
Tom Tom units seem to be a little more money up front, but they also seem like they give you a bit more on the back end for it in the form of cool services and free map upgrades and such.
Do any of the other GPS makers offer stuff like this?
I thought BMW had this system pre-installed on their satnav option.
The Giz article states that you can download routes from Google maps to your Tom Tom. The video appears to let you download a location as a Favorite, not an entire route. If so, then your Tom Tom will calculate the route. Still a useful feature!
But creating a custom route in Google Maps with multiple stops/waypoints along the way (for a long roadtrip) and then loading to the GPS, would be extremely useful.
This is very scary, because I have found that Google's idea of where some addresses are located can be actually several miles off.
(Of course, the prime example I was about to cite in my immediate area has been corrected. I did submit a correction a week ago, so I guess it has been accepted.)
My tomtom 920t is great. Much better than the Garmin nuvi series.
@kc2idf:
If I'm interpreting the video correctly, all that Google Maps will send to your TomTom is the address itself (i.e. it doesn't look like it is sending latitude/longitude coordinates or something). So the only thing that will really matter is TomTom's idea of where an address is located.
That's cool and all, but unless I'm missing something, that video leaves out the step where you'd have to get your TomTom out of the car or off it's recharger, and plug it into your computer so it can sync up with the new "favorite" you just added to the TomTom Home software. The TomTom doesn't get that new coordinate *wirelessly,* so far as I know.
Or am I missing something?
Yup, just checked this link: [www.tomtom.com]
You still need to connect the TomTom to your computer in order to sync. Really then, how much time is being saved here?
Jeblis: I have both a TomTom, and a Garmin Nuvi 680. No way, no how, is he TomTom "much better." They each have their strengths. The TomTom has quite a few (significant) weaknesses, too.
Fofer: It may depend on the version of TomTom you have. I played around with an older TomTom and the UI wasn't as nice. The 920 tweaked the UI to make it better, in my opinion. The processor/updates are faster (very little lag in location). The only thing I like better about the Garmin is the use of antialiasing/gradients on the maps.
There are some other software utilities that TomTom could add that would make it nicer, but overall I like it better.
Boy, his date must be hungry. Barely a peck on the cheek and she's running into the restaurant.
I LOVE my 910, but this only works with the new release TomTom go software which is not Mac compatible yet (will be in Jan) Why can't people just release BOTH variations of software at the same time (yeah, I know all the arguments.. yadda yadda yadda,...) just having a moan!
What is the point of a car GPs if you have to keep remoiving it to connect to your PC? This should be ALL INCLUSIVE. Stick a GPRS chip in there with an OS to handle GOogMaps and end it.
Either that or GOOGLE should just release their own GPS. End of story.
Actually the newer TomToms can connect via bluetooth/cellphones gprs/3g, (only some phones work though).
@StackyBotrus: You do realize that GPS units currently made are portable, don't you?
The great thing about it is that you can add a bunch of addresses one day as favorites and not have to worry about it later.
Somewhat not related to the article but kinda on topic... What do you guys think of the TomTom One LE available at BestBuy for $150?
The 'LE' does stand for "limited edition" doesn't it?Is it a limited in what it can do or in how many are going to be produced?
Thoughts?
@ecobore: thanks homie for answering my "OS X yet?" question. That is the main reason why I went with Tom Tom, is the OS X support (and the price was right, too.)
OMG... put my tinfoil hat on... that map goes way to close to my house...
Either Google maps is smart enough to know I don't have Tomtom Home installed on my work computer, or this isn't activated yet. The "send" link goes straight to the email interface.
"Thanks to the "Send to GPS" button that Google has added to Google Maps, you can send routes from Google Maps direct to your navigation device via TomTom Home."
Nope sorry that's not how it works. Just tried it with my TomTom & the only way you get the option to "send to GPS" is when you select a specific location\address (ie. a house or restaurant). You CAN'T send an entire route. Once you've sent the location to the TomTom you can then add it to your route.
On the plus side it is easier to use than the TomTom screen to find an address so I can see how it could be useful, especially if you're adding a lot of locations. Would be nice if I could send an entire route but I guess that would defeat the purpose of the GPS unit.
I think this will have certain positive effects on the economic feasibility for consumers to buy this.
I thought up some predictions for the partnership here:

I just tried it several times and it didn't work. After selecting which version of TomTom Home I have installed I got another page that told me there was a problem with the link and I should contact the webmaster.
I can't find the send to gps button...whats wrong with me.
I can't find the 'send to gps' button either. I am using Explorer v6, not 7. Would this be the problem as I know Google mail screens are different in the two versions as well.
