The Night Before the 3G iPhone Launch at the 5th Ave Apple Store

The line outside of the Apple store on 59th street in NYC is definitely an event. There are about 100 people wrapped around the block, patiently waiting for the iPhone 3G. We'll be up all night checking out the scene and talking to the diehards who can't wait to get their hands on the new phone. We've got games, blankets, and provisions (liquid and food), so if you're in town, stop by and say "Hi". Otherwise, keep checking back to see all of the madness going on—you never know what could happen. Update: Greg Packer showed up!

1:06 AM - One opportunistic young gentleman named Henry is selling his 7th place spot in line ... for a cool $150.

1:10 AM - People are dropping like flies. A couple just left when they found out they'd have to sign up for contracts.

1:35 - Surprisingly, there aren't many people who waited here for a phone last year. However, I did find Matt, who waited last year in Richmond, VA. He's in town on business but got so caught up when he walked by the line he decided to hop in. He conveniently broke his original iPhone last week in a "Brazilian party accident", and he's pretty excited to get a new one.

1:58 - I asked some people what apps they were most excited about, and I got the same answer over and over: Super Monkey Ball. Other than that, people are looking forward to Remote, AIM, Facebook, and Whrrl.

2:25 - PACKER! He's here, but not for the iPhone. He's planning on sleeping in the park tomorrow to get Bon Jovi tickets. He says he won't be the first in line, but he'll be close. Special thanks to my new best friend Henry for coming to tell me he's here.

4:15 - News crews are starting to show up, so you know it's getting serious. I've seen trucks from CW, ABC, Good Day New York, along with reporters from the Wall Street Journal and DVICE.

4:20 - Update: Packer is asleep like a little baby.

4:45 - Sleepiness is setting in for me too, but I have a whole slew of energy drinks to get me through the final push. So far I've had an açai banana-mango concoction that was awful going down but had a delicious aftertaste, and a Venom Mojave Rattler that smelled like Robotussin and tasted like battery acid. I still haven't tried Stamina-RX, whose can promises "Extreme Sexual Experience".

5:30 - The line has stretched all the way down 59th St. to Madison Ave.
5:40 - The sun is starting to rise over NYC, people are getting excited.

6:20 - Everyone is getting interviewed about the iPhone 3G by radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers. What's left to say? We want our phones!
6:45 - People are getting antsy, they keep moving around to stay awake and excited. This last hour and change is going to be a challenge.

6:50 - The line is moving, people are walking in! Will updated ASAP.

6:55 - Phew! Almost lost my spot in line, but here it is, the final few feet until they open the doors and let all of us here loose on the Cube and the prize we've had our eyes on for hours.

7:50 - Frucci's all the way down the block and he told me that the line is firmly wrapped around Madison Ave. again.
7:55 - A bunch of people in orange iPhone 3G shirts just stepped outside, and the crowd started cheering.

8:00 - One of those hippies who's been waiting a week to (allegedly) buy a phone got in trouble for something and now it looks like he can't come in.
8:05 - The doors are open and people are going in! I'll be back with more after I buy mine to let you know how it goes.

8:07 - Just got down here and there are at least 100 Apple employees cheering everyone on. It's nuts!

8:15 - Buying my phone, I'm thisclose to tearing the box open right now.
8:27 - Mission accomplished!
8:28 - The SIM ejector tool is a lot fancier than I expected.

This was by far the biggest response to a Photoshop contest yet, with entries filling my inbox every minute or so for the past 24 hours. Stop! For the love of everything holy, please stop! I can't take looking at this guy any more! I feel completely dead inside. Consider this the last post focusing on Greg Packer on Gizmodo unless he invents a new laptop or something.
Storms Ahead for The Brave 40 on 5th Ave

We've seen some comments asking for more details about the action on 5th Avenue. Well here it is, as requested. At the fore, of course, is the man who by now needs no introduction. Greg Packer was incredibly amiable, talking to anyone who approached him. He even paused for a moment to let us snap the photo above. Though he has been the highlight these past few days, he's joined by about 40 others who are also camped around the Apple Cube, wrapping around the corner at 5th Avenue and 58th.

The area is a swarm of news vans, camera crews, reporters, and the curious passerby with camera in hand. Greg and his fellow campers were grilled by persons famous and mundane–from the random lady recording an interview on her phone, to the likes of Mo Rocca, who arrived just in time for the wind and some light rain. By all reports, the line has been a polite one. Campers are free to get up and stretch, grab a bite to eat, or stop at a nearby public restroom. No one complained when a spot was empty for 20 minutes or more, and there wasn't any scramble for the vacant spot.

It's amazing how many people walking by didn't know about the iPhone. With media buzz about the device right now, you'd think it inescapable. Still, we had nearly a dozen folks come up to us and ask. Very few saw the point in camping out for it, let alone in the rain.

The weather hasn't been too bad, but the rain tonight is the second time nature's tried to dissuade the campers from their impending purchase. While we were out there, it really only drizzled, though some heavier rain and maybe thunder might be headed their way. Still, the line grows by the hour. At the end of it was Pablo, around 40th in line, who came straight from work to begin camping. He brought a book the size of a dictionary to help pass the time.

Update: Wilson went by the line later this evening and counted nearly 70 campers. Looks like the rain picked up a little, too.

We'll be there tomorrow to check up on our brave early iPhone adopters. May they see the floor of the Cube in good health.

A CNBC news van was on its way out as I came in, and it looks like Fox News woke up one of their reporters for a quick stand-up. No comb, buddy? What startled me most was when Packer rose out of his seat and left. You think the #1 man in line would guard that spot with his life. He came back, though, and I'm glad he did. Because he changed shirts. And I saw them. Both of them. The nipples that are more well known than Packer's day job. Happily for you, I was too stunned to get a snap. – Pics and reporting by Kevin Hall

He sits in lines for all sorts of events just so the media will ask his boring opinion on things and he can read about himself in newspapers. You like publicity, Packer? I'll give you some goddamned publicity. It's time for another Gizmodo Photoshop Contest.

Your task: put Greg Packer in ridiculous situations, as ridiculous as possible. Honestly, I'm not going to be all that specific on this one, as I want to see where you guys go with this one. But do it fast! I want to have a gallery of the best submissions up before 6pm tomorrow, when the iPhone goes on sale. So get crackin', and send your finest work to me at adam@gizmodo.com by noon tomorrow. As usual, humor is the number one priority, with craftsmanship a close second. Entries that have both are what will make the winners gallery. Dismissed!

Breaking: First in Line Guy is a Pro Linesitter, Sweats a Lot

[UPDATED: Nipple Shot by Infoweek] You know that guy who's first in line at the 5th Ave Apple Store? Greg Packer? Turns out he's no Apple fanboy. No, he's an obsessive linesitter. He was the first person to see Ground Zero when the viewing platform opened, the first to sign the condolence book at the British consulate when Princess Diana died, and the first in line to greet President George W. Bush after his inauguration. Hell, the guy waited in line for eight hours to meet Brandy. Brandy!

What in the hell? Waiting in line overnight sucks, but this guy has made it his personal mission to be the first to do whatever crap there is that people are willing to wait for. Will he even get an iPhone? Does he care about the iPhone at all? Does he know what an iPhone is? It seems like he just likes the attention and seeing his name quoted in papers who don't realize that he isn't a genuine fan of whatever event is being covered. The dude has his own Wikipedia entry for crissakes, and it's huge.
