We had written a very smug, Macs rule PCs drool post reporting that PC users could run Leopard. And then our Mac froze up and we lost it all. So now you just get the news straight, without our giggling. The news, once again: OSX Leopard has been hacked to work on all Intel PCs, and the process is ridiculously simple, requiring a small .zip and a touch of blank media. [UPDATE: And it looks like you need Tiger pre-installed, too.]
Of course, by installing Leopard on a PC, you are endangering the stability of the space/time continuum, risking not just the future of the Earth and our own humanity, but the existence of everything in the Universe. And we could never condone anything that Back to the Future told us was best avoided. [OSx86]
Thanks Jason!

PC users don't deserve Leopard. =)
SUFFER!!

I'd try it. The new OS looks like it rocks. Why tie yourself to one company? Go with the best product out.
Could it be that Apple designed Leopard to let this happen in order to spread the love faster and them bring on track to world domination?
And yes, I agree, PC users really don't deserve it.
Cool, I'll install an OS that lets me play 10 games and run 3% of the software I can already run. Great idea.
If Apple won't let me install it with their cd, I'm going to use my way...the free way...torrent!!!
If you do use that method in the link, note that Time Machine won't work (It needs a hacked ionetworking kext), and hardware support can be lacking (For example, Nvidia 8800's are supported, but 8600's and below are not)
There is going to be a new DVD that's going to be put out tomorrow (on various outlets) that's going simplify this even more (Straight install with bootable DVD), and is going to fix the Time machine issue as well.
So if you really wanna steal OSX, just wait. However, getting a Mac would be the easiest and most legal way to use OSX, so I would just go for that. :-)
@SchruteBuck: Wow, you really are like Dwight...
I've been seriously considering installing OS X on my PC now that it's built for x86 hardware, simply because Apple really nailed the gist of a GUI. Icons behave intuitively, you can drag and drop to and from just about anywhere, and the blasted thing is solit as a rock.
Can't we all just get a long?
Just how smug could you be after waiting in line, perhaps even in the rain, just to spending $100+ for what would have been a free service pack download in the PC world?
osx on pc the world is comiing to an end!!!!!!
apple doesn't fall to far from the tree(microsoft).... learn to live with it gizmodo, mac is the same crap as windows, get out of apple's ass... you guys reek from the smell.
@MaxRC: Nothing in this world is free, hippie. Go back to spooning with your damned spotted owls & making tie-dyes in the woods!!
@jawzxy: He is Dwight. Livin' in his Second, Second Life
@MaxRC: Yeah, you imagine downloading a 3+GB service pack? Because that's how much bigger Leopard is than Tiger. I think 300+ new features (yes, I know they're small, but it's how you use them) deserves it's own OS upgrade. And I prefer paying $130 every 1 to 2 years to have an updated computer rather than waiting 6 years and finally getting an update for $400 =]
I know this may sound stupid but I use OSX and XP (with vista still sitting on the shelf) but what prevents OSX from being installed on PC hardware?
Viva la one button mouse revolution!
Can someone say how to do it? or a link?
Can you install on the same hard drive? or do you need to do it on a separate one? If so then this is very old news..
I'm hoping it's possible for a dual boot
Nevermind, I forgot i have an AMD.. time to dig out the old dusty dell!
Then how come they didn't get Tiger to run on a PC?
@slingblade: dude, a little bt of reading comprehension goes a long way. jeese, was it not clearly stated that it would mess up the space/time continuum?
:p
dude has anyone actually tried this? I'm definetly doing this. i'll let you all know how it works out!!
@teexcue: if leopard really adds 3+ GB for 300 new (small) features then apple has really lost it. that would be the worst fucking example of bloat EVER.
on topic: i wonder how long it will be before apple sends in a crack team of commando lawyers to bankrupt anyone associated with this. i've never read the os-x EULA but given that apple is a big mean corporation i'd be willing to bet you can't do this legally.
@slingblade
Tiger was hacked just weeks after Jobs announced they were moving to Intel processors. Tons of people have been using OSX on their beige box PC's since before Apple even sold Intel based Macs.
@Xidius: Stop Been such a Winey lil girl/fanboy. . im a Mac User and Pc one to.. its fan boys like u that make an everyday Mac users look bad, who cares if Pc's run Leopard? i think its great that people have the ability to run both O.S's : )
@slingblade: they did get tiger to run on the PC, it just wasn't publicized as much at the time.
this is totally safe to do without destroying the time-space continuum as long as you don't accidentally prevent your parents from meeting and you have a power supply that's rated for more than 1.21 jiggawatts.
@oldmanstan
Apple still hasn't shutdown insanelymac.com and hackint0sh.org. They've been helping people run OSX on their generic PC's for over two years. And a lot of the iPhone Dev Team hackers were instrumental in hacking OSX
i looked over what has to be done and it looks like you have to already have tiger installed on the pc intended for leopard. i was really hoping for clean(ish) install of leopard. The title should read "Leopard Upgrade Hacked For Self-Hating PC Users Who Were Using Tiger Hack In The First Place"
keep your fruit.
i can almost get all the flair of apple o.s on my xp with other free aps.
it's just an operating system guys...
@versaceboi:
thats like saying its just a choice of sexuality or its just a religion
This is something I may be willing to try, I tried to do it with OSX86 on Mac OS 10.4.9, but failed miserably, the setup was too complicated, I tried, and I got all the way to the apple logo and the setup process, and I used the correct Intel patch, but it never worked for some reason. Anyways, maybe a company like parallels should make a product to run OS10 on a pc legally and easily, then maybe Apple fan boys wouldn't be buying Apple hardware as much. For instance, everyone knows that if you want an actual tower for an apple computer, you either have to get an Imac, which isn't good for people with already great monitors, or you have to pay a fortune for a mac pro, so if they offered something like parallels for PC's, some mac fans would be either buying PC hardware pre-built, or build their own hardware, and then OS10 may become more popular.
Man, I hope the calculator in leopard is sweet...oh and the clock too, I hope it's awesome and digital.
i'd already be rocking a mac, if they went AMD.
mac OS X is beautiful. and i used to describe myself as an apple hater, so it's big for me to be saying that.
can anyone try to find out if leopard can be cracked for my computer? i have an athlon 64 2.0GHz venice core, and 1GB of value RAM because i'm a poor fuck.
Regardless of whether you use OS X or not, you have to respect the pricing strategy. ~$130 bucks for non-server version and $999 for unlimited server version. It's pretty simple. Apple provides DIB (drop in box) upgrade disks to re sellers so that all new Macs will have Leopard.
Lastly, no key. Apple relies on people doing the right thing, and paying for the upgrade. It a good model. I like companies that put "trust" before drm.
Don't worry, v.10.5.1 will brick them. It's all part of Uncle Steve's plan.
I will try this, though I know it will be bricked in a short time. I have to admit that I have come a long way from never touching a mac to now having 3 in the house (though the PC's are still ahead). They both have their place in my house, now if I could consolidate them into one computer that would run each, with apps, at native speed, that is AWESOME! I also think that Apple will eventually go to the software model and be more cross platform. I have been beat up on this many times but if Apple would make Final Cut Studio for the PC it would be great. Better yet, give me a fully bootable Win/OSX PC with RAID 0 (2 TB), 8 Gigs of RAM, and a few extra TB's of space and that would seal the deal for me.
@Pender:
Yeah, so totalitarian of them trying to lock down an OS that is constantly being improved upon for the sole purpose of selling their own hardware (as opposed to Dells, HPs, and DIYs), using R&D money generated through said hardware sales. I mean that would be like Microsoft trying to lock Halo 3 into the X-Box 360! Preposterous!
@crazysamz:
The guys at VMWare and NovaSoft(Parallels) would jump at the chance to virtualize OSX but Jobs has strictly forbidden any use of OSX outside a Mac environment.
I would love to be able to install OSX on my custom built desktops but without the driver problems and stability headaches the hacked versions create. Unfortunately, I really don't see Apple letting it happen (at least anytime soon).
Apple may go more cross-platform regarding applications, but not OS X. The marriage between the software and the hardware is divine, unlike Britney and Kevin's. For those who remember, Appleworks and Apple's first browser were cross-platform, and that has been followed by iTunes and Safari. So, I think that iWorks or iLife for Windows are possible.
I really don't care one way or the other...but I'm all about numbers, and I don't like when they aren't right:
1) Vista doesn't cost $400 unless you don't know better. Any mentaltard can go on NewEgg, buy a $2 cable to qualify for OEM software, and get Vista Home Premium for $112 or Vista Ultimate for $180. (You'll notice I left out Home Basic, because most people agree it's pretty well neutered).
2) You seem to be saying the Apple OS system offers some financial benefit...but your math works out lousy. If you're willing to spend $130 every 1.5 years to upgrade the same machine for 6 years, you're spending 4x130 = $520 on new OS's AFTER your original purchase. To me, that's a lot. That's a whole computer for 95% of the "Dell" population. I build my own computers, and $500 goes a long way there too.
Mac or PC, I've never really seen the point in upgrading the OS on a machine that's working. I am a bit careful with money...but it just seems like there isn't much to gain by upgrading the OS of an old machine, and there's always the risk of getting slow performance with a new OS on old hardware. Just wait until your current machine is too slow for you, then get a new one with whatever OS suits you best at the time. For me, that time line ends up being about 4-5 years...so Mac or PC, there'd be a new OS available and who cares if there were a couple versions I missed?
Everyone who complains about Vista being crap slow is probably using old hardware.
Leopard will be slow on old hardware too. Tiger is slow as crap on anything below 1ghz PC with less than 512mb ram.
I won't be upgrading my 3 powerbooks to leopard, they will stay tiger. I will be upgrading my macbook pro to leopard though since it already has the hardware to handle it.
But upgrading an OS on old equipment is a lost cause. Save your money for a new system.
That process doesn't look rediculously simple to me....
@Dearhaw: Who said OS X was being "bricked"? Your mom? Apple has been selling single and family pack OS X for years and has never locked them down in updates. Btw, my Leopard OS calls your crap too: When I spell checked this posting, it wanted to correct your name from "Dearhaw" to "Diarrhea". :)
A step in the right direction. If we can get more hacked Mac OSX on PCs perhaps they'll open up their operating systems on pcs. The only reason why they aren't doing it is because they're fucktards and want you to buy their overpriced computers.

Why not use linux?
Ubuntu 7.10 works really nice, the only problem is that now when I'm a linux user, I'm being rejected by everyone, even my pet dog don't want me. On the other hand, I have a working operating system for free with free support and I will never need to reboot.
Peace out nerds!
ok, OS X on the oqo, OS X on that diminuitive Vaio, here I come! If Apple won't build similar machines, maybe that's the way. Although a 7.5" Version of the iPhone, with a full OS X and a 1.8" harddisk would also do the job. Who needs a keyboard, if you can get ink? But I have been saying that for years, and either Apple is still too traumatized by their Newton experience or just too bloody stuck up with their current form factors to go out on a limb. Maybe, if there is a hardware choice out there, I won't have to keep whining?
@takemetoyourtoaster: For a long time I've seen PCs running Mac.
@yogibimbi: Man, get ready to spend some nights coding. And please show me some screenshots when it's done!
