You know we're getting close to MacWorld when the Apple noise shifts from steady hum to full-frenzied thrashing. Spooks report spotting an anorexic "dark grey" or "gun metal" 13-inch aluminum notebook prancing around campus, which could be a new MacBook model Apple's supposedly buying LED backlights for, a destined-to-die prototype or pure bunk. Personally, I think a darker aluminum would be nice pull-away from the now-cliched brushed metal aesthetic. Cheer or blast the new notebook look we know practically nothing about in the comments. doesn't look good, why is apple copying hp now? fail
its a drop in disk
wow, by the end of the day you wouldnt be able to see the keyboard with all the fingerprints that are gonna be on it.
Black is the new black.
@PGGIZ: seriously. But we will see at MacWorld.@thistle.john: I was kidding. It will ship with 10.5
That is SEX.
Oh. Shit. Uh, I think I'm gonna wait on getting that new MacBook for Christmas...
why is the cd drive located in the front. doesnt seem logical
@boomersooner9133: macbook pros have the optical drive in the front. your pt?
Hmmm fake? idk.. Classic Ipod on the backround.. ?
Gunmetal is so....2002. I smell fakery.
gahh, must…get…rid…of…plastic…housing. please make this
you guys do realize that the picture above is not the one spotted on campus right? thats an old photoshopped pic from a while back...
damn, does it still have that sharp edge? I know I know, splitting hairs.
This news is so hot it's NSFW.

All of you people saying it does not look good you are all idiots. This is obviously not the actual laptop apple is releasing it is just a photoshop.
apple's QC is horrible, these machines look nice from outside, but for what I have experienced, it has hardware problems 3 times more often than my old compaq. Jesus, apple should offer 3 years warranty for the price its asking now, instead of 1 year.
awww there's a button to open it? I like to pry my MacBook open.
Can the two-tone, and can the latch button. I like the current macbook design, and I like the fact that there are no holes or hooks and a button necessary to open and close the clamshell. Macbook < Macbook Pro in terms of case design.
@PGGIZ: No kidding. I hope this is fake. Why would Apple want their PCs...oops, see, it's already happening.
Now, I can see the 13" macbook pro. If that came out, I'd so get that shit. Discrete graphics and better firewire options, and hopefully the same HDD accessibility. I'm so there.
Who needs to carry a 13" laptop around in a briefcase when I already have 13" neatly tucked away in my pants?
Apple will seriously f*ck it up by pairing the beatific deamon goddess with really crappy integrated graphics. (They really want you to buy the Pro.)
heh, now it just looks like a laptop. You'll stop looking like douches now! Isn't that what you want?
@longshot: are you poor too?
gunmetal, like the border of the ipod touch? Sounds reasonable.
I'm so looking forward to paying too much for this. America, land of bountiful credit, and overpriced, beautiful notebooks that will love you forever, do your bidding, and never talk back. Unlike women.
Umm... guys... that's a 'shop. It's also not from the source. I've noticed that the Giz writers occasionally put a semi-related pic on a article to grab your eyes without noting that it's not DIRECTLY related. (Giz editors: might want to make a point of taking care of that in future articles. kthx.)
That said, it's a pretty sexy 'shoop. I really wish Apple would have a contest for photoshoppers to design their next product. As I remember, there was a flash drive company that did this, and there was fairly decent response. With the rabid fanboi following Apple has, I'm pretty sure there would be some incredibly hawt designs submitted. Make the Grand Prize something pretty major like.. oh, 10 of the product for you and your friends, and they'll even have professional design studios signing up for the contest pro bono.
I know he never reads this, but if any Apple types are reading this, please copy/paste this to His Royal Steveness and ask him to pretty please get on this idea. M'kay? That'd be greeaaaaat.
@DirkusMaximus: You get 100 points for the Office Space Lumberg reference.
that is absolutely hideous. I am certified as an AAPT (if you don't know what that means...read on, if you do, HOLD ME TO MY WORD)
I will seriously shave my head in recognition of such ugliness. Only time will tell
THAT PICTURE IS NOT WHAT THE STORY IS TALKING ABOUT. It is just a comp put together by someone else, the story says a gunmetal version was spotted. Nothing about a picture.
oh, and AAPT, definitly the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists
I think there is a lot of credibility to the idea that completely new MacBooks will be coming out early 2008. First, the story that apple is buying 13.3 inch LED screens. Second, the sightings of white and black brushed aluminum apple laptops on their campus. Third, ATI has announced it has developed hybrid graphics chips that combine an integrated GPU and a stand-alone GPU and allow the user to switch between the two depending upon battery/processing needs. Finally, the current MacBooks haven't seen a FULL redesign since their release. These suckers are ripe for change and all the signs are pointing to it.
I think MacWorld 2008 will see new computer displays, new Mac Pro desktops, and the ultra-portable macbook pro 12inch laptop. I think we will have to wait a bit longer for the MacBook redesign, but it is certainly coming first half of 2008.
What do you guys think?
love the black but not the 'oreo' look; the double color look is weak.
@nocar: nicely worded.
just adding, I think shiny black is the new black, but like everything, looks better than its functional. I have to clean my black macbook at least once a week because i leave fingerprints and grease all over after few days. Wrong type of shiny black.
I actually like that 'cliche' brushed aluminum look. And I don't even have a macbook pro yet
From a design point-of-view, I could see Apple doing something like this to complete the theme set by the iPhone and iMacs. However, from an aesthetic POV, I don't like it. There's nothing compelling enough about the design to pump my 'nads. They can do MUCH better.
Yeah, Hiii... That looks soooo PC. I hope it doesn't end up looking like this rendering. I'm holding out on a new Mac Pro until I hear the announcements next month, and I hope it's not fugly like this concept.
@Kaiser-Machead:
Which Lumberg?
I realize this photo has nothing to do with the article but I thought I'd just point out that if the pic is any indication of the future of Apple design the next "Hi I'm a Mac..." ads should feature twins. That taste in the back of my mouth? Digested Chinese.
I think MacBook Pros (or MacBooks Pro, if you prefer) are ugly as they are now with those hideous silver keys, so I would like to see their appearances updated the next time their specifications are updated. Of course, color and overall appearance is not as important as functionality, so what I would really like to see is a multi-button trackpad option, even if it were only available with build-to-order systems. HDMI output would be nice too.
@Sheemo44: Not everyone has to look at the keys when they type :P
That's not a picture of it, it's just a rendering...
1st, that photoshop render is really old. and speaking of old:
the macbook pro design is really old. it's the same basic look overall since the aluminum powerbook g4 came out close to 3 years ago. sure it got thinner, added a camera, and got a heck of a lot faster over the years, but it looks the same... seriously apple, you redesigned the macbook, you redesigned the imac, it is beyond time for the mac book pros.
Wow! They're recycling guns into Macbooks?!!
Who said Apple wasn't green?
Btw, I think someone ran over that iPod in the picture.
uh, is that an old HP (the kind that the latch breaks on) or a current Viao? Seriously. Apple should motor on up to the Sony store in SF and check out the future as sony sees it. I would much rather spend too much on one of those (sub)notebooks. Heck I dont doubt that it would get me laid! carbon fiber on the back of the 1/4" thick screen. Weighs what 2.7 lbs? Apple has nothing as cool. The brushed metal thing was old 2 years ago. the black macbook looks less sexy than a thinkpad t60.
where sony and Apple both fail is this whole idea of white notebooks. Everybody hates white people. Why would they want white notebooks? Both of them get dirty and show stains too easy. And they are always yelling at their kids in public.
My side aches with laugher as I write this. Words cannot express how obviously wrong the rumor mills are. Maybe Apple slipped up last time, but it doesn't mean they'll make the same mistake again. Just wait, MacWorld draws near.
Gizmodo.com, have you ever commented on your OWN website with an iPhone? It fucking sucks. Nice blog regardless.
If you fix the page's current configuration, therefore normalizing it's operabiiity with iPhone, I will be happy to comment more.

So would I!
I am still holding out for Stainless Steel. It goes with everything in any sitation. And so shineyyyyyy!
I think it's pretty, but what do I know.
a second button for easy right clicking...for the love of god please!
@strider_mt2k: stop being so hard on yourself.... hahah
Not a bad design if you ask me, as an HP owner I'm rather fond of the glossy black with the silver (even though the silver is plastic)
Now...here's the part where I throw out baseless, yet not unrealistic assumptions.
Unified Macbook line (No more "Pro" no more white plastic) with 13, 15, and 17 inch models
"Extention Models" with iPod names
-MacBook nano (ultraportable)
-MacBook touch (tablet)
