In an effort to stop competitor Netflix from totally crushing it, Blockbuster Online is instituting a "Total Access" plan that lets you return online-rented movies in stores. When you give them your rental, you get one free in-store rental, which works just like regular in-store rentals and carry standard late fees restocking penalties.
In addition, your online queue will show your movie as returned, and BB will send out your next movie as soon as possible or whenever they get around to it (most likely the latter). If you're like us and enjoy Blockbuster Online because your old account gave you two free coupons that let you rent games in stores, you'll probably enjoy this new feature as well.
Blockbuster tries new online rental incentive [News via ]

Duh, Blockbuster will save a TON of money on shipping by throwing a huge stack of DVDs together to ship from a store to the warehouse! Reminds me of how they used to make movies due at store closing time since they knew people would wait until the next morning to return a movie they watch in the evening.
Going to a store, dropping off and picking up movie rentals, with late fees and a small library. This is why I abandoned Blockbuster, and they hope it'll attract customers?
Cool idea, but won't that equate to longer lines? That's the last thing Blockbuster needs.
I kinda like it. I use Blockbuster online and i always forget to mail the movies back. now i can just zip over to the store and trade the movies i've seen for ones i havent. Actually did this today. just to clarify for each movie to take into the store you get 1 free rental. also they throw in 1 extra rental a month just in case you've already movies out you dont want to return.
I hate it. I have to memorize and explain what it does to customers that don't care. you get a coupon a week if you stay with/use the online trial 3 out instead of the new blockbuster access and it's the same price. those trials stop going out today. If you have one I think you can still use it. It's a better deal and more movies.
This works for me. It just adds to an already great service. I just hope they don't take away my game rentals in the future.
Very cool, it makes my online membership alot more flexible. Makes my movie turn around time faster, and minimizes those times when I have just shipped one movie back but haven't recieved my other movie yet.
Love the idea. Tried it last night and got the free rental no prob. I returned it at around 6 PM last night, but it hasn't showed up as returned in my queue as of 9 AM this morning. I thought the idea was that it would be faster than mailing it, as in instant. Hopefully they're just working out the kinks.

I'd be interested to see if this applies to ALL Blockbuster stores.
When they last introduced the "No Late Fees" promotion in order to win back customers, I decided to give Blockbuster another try. So I went to our local Blockbuster, rented a few movies, and, like always, returned them a couple days. They then attempted to collect another $12 from me in late fees. I reminded them about the "no late fees" campaign. They stated that they were a Blockbuster franchise and not a Blockbuster corporate store, as such they didn't have to honor the promotion. Keep in mind, the franchise stores look and feel identical to the corporate stores...absolutely no way to tell them apart.
Needless to say, I contested the charge, spoke to the manager who reversed the charges, and I've never been to a Blockbuster since...that was probably 3 years ago.
Yeah, taking them to the store is so much simpler than putting them back in the envelope they came in and tossing them in the mail. /sarcasm
Under Wikipeda, it is announced that Blockbuster has released an offical promo code. "06823b" To redeem go to www.blockbuster.com/total. You will get unlimited rentals for 2 weeks with 3 dvds at a time.
Other websites such as slickdeals.net, cnet, engadget has confirmed that is the official promo code and has asked that all consumers be aware of wrong websites such as www.blockbuster.com/TRIAL. The correct word is total (for total access)
Another source that was also mentioned was the fact that you can call the stores to verify if the promo code is official. The district store is in San Gabriel, California. Phone number is (626)571-2056. You can ask to speak with a manager or any employee to assist you in signing up or to confirm if the "06823b" is a valid promo code.
I rejoined blockbuster when they started "total access". It sounds like a good idea, but, they can't seem to get it right. Been on it 2 weeks, swapped movies at store the first week, had to call customer service to get new ones shipped, they never showed any movies as returned.
Returned movies to the store Sunday, one movie was just shipped this evening,Tue.,this was only after called customer service, and pointed out that all the movies it showed as being out were returned. They cleared them and finally shipped 1 movie an hour or so later. Instead of doing something for the customer, they just want to get you into the store and slow down on there shipping.

If it sounds too good to be true ... it probably is. Blockbuster recently raised their total access rate to $34.95 a month. At the same time, they also made a conscious decision to delay shipments of videos to members and violate many of the terms of their agreement. Case in point ... with all 3 previously shipped movies returned to the store over the weekend, they would be obligated (by their own terms) to ship videos "the next business day," which is a Monday. After 3 consecutive Mondays without shipping I wrote to them to remind that them that "Monday is a shipping day" and how I expected them to ship 3 videos on Monday. I will credit Blockbuster for prompt replies to customers inquiries. Their reply said it like this ...
"We normally have a healthy amount of returned items on the weekend. If an item is checked in on a weekend (including Friday,) then the next expected business day for a new shipment would fall on the following Tuesday, with limited shipments on Monday. Your last movie was checked in on 01/06/2008, and we will be shipping another movie to you from your queue by the end of the next business day on 01/08/2008."
Is this lame or what? For those of you without a calendar handy, the 8th is a Tuesday. How could the next business day following a Friday or a weekend be considered to be a Tuesday? Here's is what Total Access really boils down to. They will cater to members who pay the fee to have less movies shipped. A member such as myself might get a Monday shipment on Tuesday, have it back to the store on Wednesday and be eligible to have another video shipped on Thursday, which I'd get by Friday or Saturday and return to the store sometime on the weekend (ready to have more videos shipped to me on Monday .... a shipping day). They don't like having to ship member 6 videos a week (even though they are now paying $10 more a month). I thought the rate increase would make it easier for them to live up to their obligation, but instead, they have decided to take the money and run. I also suspect they are cubby holing videos ... that is, that will say they are shipping on a Tuesday, and marking your queue as a video shipped on Tuesday, but actually setting the video aside for a day and shipping it out on Wednesday. I don't feel Blockbuster is being honest with their customers and not living up to their obligation.
I agree, the next business day after Friday, Saturday or Sunday is Monday unless it is a holiday. I actually had a guy in the Blockbuster legal department tell me the next business day is Tuesday. The only way this company is going to learn they cannot just mislead customers and ignore the terms of service is if Blockbuster customers go to the website of the BBB and file a complaint. I would also suggest you go to the website of your state attorney general and file a complaint. If Blockbuster is not going to ship on Monday when a DVD is checked in on a weekend, they need to clearly state that in the terms of service.
In addition, since the price increase was such a huge percentage, it would be interesting to see if the state attorney general of your state would think it is okay to lure customer with one price then raise that price by a huge amount.
Last night I talked to someone at a Blockbuster store. They told me they are still getting a 3 at a time UNLIMITED in store exchanges for $19.99. In other words they were never subjected to any of the price increases or change in terms that Blockbuster imposed on some of us with little notice. I emailed Blockbuster online about this. Here is the response I received:
Thanks for contacting BLOCKBUSTER Online Customer Care.
Based on usage, some customers won't see either an increase in price or a change in plan terms. Some other customers will be given the option to move from a plan with unlimited in-store exchanges to a plan with monthly limits on exchanges, but at no price increase from their current plan. Finally, again based on their usage, some customers will be given the option to stay on their current unlimited plan, but at an increased price.
All Blockbuster members have a choice and can always change their current plan to another offering.
Sincerely,
Edgar

So, on top of the "next business day" issue, the huge price increase, and significant change in terms, I find out Blockbuster used some arguably arbitrary criteria to allow some customers to keep the original terms and price while the rest of use saw huge price increases and / or a material change in terms. Again, I would suggest you contact the BBB and your state Attorney General.
I asked Blockbuster for clarification and specific details about the criteria used. I will post those when I receive them.
