Comcast customers in Pittsburgh and Denver now have an additional option for checking out a flick the day the DVD drops: video on demand. While this probably isn't going to hurt DVD sales — since people who buy DVDs on release day theoretically want to keep them — Blockbuster might take a beating, since rental was previously the only other (legal) option for checking out a DVD on D-day, given that the lag time between a DVD's release and its debut on VOD was about 4-6 weeks. Worse still for rental chains, the price is right at $4 a pop and you don't even have to waste gas money to take the sucker back.

Blockbuster is going down faster than the Titanic. Between this and NetFlix, they're screwed.
RE macdeth: Don't forget grocery stores and gas stations with video rental stations. What Blockbuster needs is a really good idea. I always thought a pizza-to-go inside a Blockbuster would be a killer combination.
I think the Total Access plan Blockbuster is doing is a great idea. I subscribe to Blockbuster online and get three movies at a time. Now when I want to return them I can either drop it in the mail or just go down to Blockbuster and get a new movie. Bonus: The mail-in movie I return instantly frees up the next movie on my queue. So far so good and I've enjoyed it plenty. I'll definitly be using it more and more once finals are finished. ugh!
Don't think the article said, but is the VOD in HD? So many people have HD sets now, who wants to download an SD movie?
On the flipside, I haven't been in a Blockbuster in years. As fun as it always was finding NO copies of current movies, I just quit going and buy the ones I want to see. Since most movies suck these days, it's not very costly.
I cannot effin wait to see BlockBuster shutter their theivin, no porno, retard hiring doors.

Something doesn't track here... don't most cable companies and VOD sources get movies before they get to DVD? Why is this so much more pressure on BB?
huygir, you got it backwards on this one. Nobody gets it before it's relesed on DVD. In the past Comcast has been a good 4 to 6 weeks behind the DVD release date. That forced me to go to Netflix.
Sweet_Toof, you just get to wetch it not download it. But you're right I hope it's in HD.
