First Nintendo Wii News Channel Tour and Screenshots

Nintendo's Wii just got the update over the wire for the Wii News Channel. Basically, It's a wire service, with categories broken down into International, National, Sports, Arts/Entertainment, Business, Tech, Health/Science. All the feeds come in from the Associated Press. OK, standard so far.

Then you activate globe mode. Whoa.

News is shown city by city, on a 3D map, with thumbnails. Click through the gallery for the guided tour and screenshots. Nintendo just mashed up mapping and news scanning and I think I like it.

  • I can't wait to get home from my overnight job in news to play news on my Wii! Go Giz for your 4:30am update keeping all us night owls informed!

  • Man! Is the service available in Holland as well? If so, I'm feeling a little sick, think it's best if I go home now.....

  • LOL hey if Giz could set me up with a free Wii, even one with a cracked outer shell, or scorch marks, or pizza grease stains, Ill take it.

and Id actually use the news feed option...

nothing much else to do in this thrice damned efficiency apartment I'm living in.

  • I love my wii. Sometimes several times a day. Seriously though, Nintendo is scoring big points in my book for coming out with all of this online content for free, and some sweet classics for cheap. Now I just have to buy myself a classic controller so I can rock out the Super Castlevania once again!

  • I updated mine this morning. The globe for news is a kick (as it is for the Weather Channel). It's not a system seller feature by any means nor something I'll use daily, but the globe MAKES me want to check the news, it's so much fun to spin and zoom! :)

  • Just downloaded it, works a treat. One nice touch is when you change the angle you're viewing the globe at, the news articles stack up into a neat little pile.

Another one is the way the letters in the news story re-arrange themselves with a little animation if you change the text size.

    Neatorama!

  • looks impressive, but there is one problem that arises from this whole thing.

Wii Channels are great and all, I love the shopping one, but...am I ever going to be at the convenience to use my Wii's news or weather channel? Maybe....but with a computer just a click away, I can check news and a lot more.

I also used the internet browser...very nice, but, too slow to use with Wiimote....

Nintendo needs like a Keyboard released for the Wii.....wait.....does a normal mouse and keyboard work with the Wii? It does have those USB slots............

  • ooops....image thingy didnt work...lol, and why did it post twice???

  • Wow. Spokane is in your little pic there. I'm actually from that town. Which means there's some sort of news from there? Woaaaah.

  • Cool feature, but man, that is one ugly globe.

  • That's it. With football season almost over, I'm going to give in. The Walmart by me is getting a Wii shipment on Sunday, time to camp out.

  • Best thing since Google Earth for making geography fun!

  • It (the news channel) actually offers a few ways to scroll through the news. I like how, when you scroll through the headlines, the map jumps to the location of the story... As long as it's not Humansville Missouri :)

  • I can't get the globe view to work for some reason. I got to to work yesterday, and now it seems to be gone. Anybody else have this problem?

It's possible that the story doesn't contain a globe view. Only the stories that have a blue ball at the title of the article will show a globe view.
  • The Nintendo ... is soo innovative! It's amazing, really. It would take only geniuses to think up only half of the features of the Nintendo Wii!
