Hands-on With the Sonos ZP80 Bundle

We received the ZP80 bundle last week and got to play with it over the weekend. This $999 bundle is essentially a mini Sonos ZonePlayer with WiFi and built-in Ethernet.

I swapped the optical cable from my AirPort and plugged the whole thing in. Using the included Sonos Desktop for Macs, I was able to index my music and get the included remote up and running in a few minutes. The fact that we can say that and mean it is a breath of fresh air. After a few dozen "media streaming" devices that konked out every few minutes, these things are seemingly bulletproof.

In short, Sonos gets this whole thing right. These boys know that UI and industrial design is absolutely key in home devices, and these little buggers are no exception. They're quite elegant and the price, about $1000 for two ZP80s and a remote, makes it quite attainable. Is it better than AirTunes? Sure, mainly because of the sexy remote. As a music streaming system, Sonos tops the list.

We would love to see Sonos come out with a video solution in the next year, because we would jump on that like a trampoline.
