Horn Speakers are Gigantic, Expensive and Dumb

I see a lot of speakers, but I have the same issue with almost all of them: they just aren't stupid enough for me. That's why I love this Ferguson Hill FH001 Horn Speaker; it's gigantic, looks really dumb, and costs a downright-insane $19,916. And at that price you'd expect awesome sound, right? Wrong! This bad boy can barely handle bass under 150hz due to the silly horn shape. But hey, if you like your treble insanely loud, I guess you can't go wrong. I'll take two! [Product Page via Red Ferret]

    awesome

  • Yeah! Nothing like framing your $39,832 with a cheap-ass Target wicker chair and two Ikea lamps! I guess after blowing grampa's retirement fund on two worthless speakers they barely had enough left over to furnish their pseudo-loft apartment.

  • Yeah, nothing like framing your $39,832 investment with a cheap-ass Target wicker chair and two ikea lamps. Way to save money for home furnishings.

  • What I love most: go to the product page, and the first thing you're hit with is a great big "FHOOI" at the top of the page. I pronounce that like "Fooey". Seems appropriate.

  • Frequency response does NOT EQUAL SOUND QUALITY!

  • Maybe this is the new trend with all the kids... TREBLE! Sad really, all the money and time you wasted pimping out your honda/wrx/eclipse/reliant k car with all those woofers only to be shown up by the new kid that went all out on tweeters!

Speaking of IKEA, these speakers seem like something they or Target could reproduce for a tad under $19916.

  • c'mon Adam, these are horn drivers, known for their efficiency, accuracy, and lack of need for a tweet/mid crossover that gives an annoying wrinkle in the frequency response. All drivers are not made to produce all frequencies, this would have to be coupled with a mid/sub driver to pick up the rest of the spectrum. You wouldn't say my Vifa tweeters suck because they don't play "bass" below 1khz, would you?

I bet talk radio sounds awesome though.

  • I do enjoy the part about big stupid looking speakers though. +1 for that.

  • Just match these up with those sony omni directional tube speakers and you have the most expensive, gaudy and yet worst sounding system around. And while you're on it, throw in those JVC quazar speakers to play D&D with.

  • The drivers (Lowther DX3) can be had for $1195/pair. I'm guessing you could have the horns fabricated at your local technical community college for under $1000, which leaves you $17,721 to roll around in naked.

  • @espire: Very true, but a frequency response that just about cuts off at 150Hz WILL say something about these speakers' potential to go deep.

    I think that's all Jesus D. meant.

  • @med: "this would have to be coupled with a mid/sub driver to pick up the rest of the spectrum."
They are, in the next room, didn't fit.

  • I think they're intended to be coupled with their spherical-shaped sub drivers, which look very cool. In terms of physics, a sphere is really the best shape for a speaker enclosure to be... it's just that they're not easy to engineer. I wonder how they actually sound?

  • maybe it's for people who bought optical disc demagnitizer...

  • Shouldn't these be pointed at the wall to deliver the maximum sound to your neighbors? (Because we know that really IS the point of thiese high volume systems. Myself - I just leave my zipper open!)

  • horn speakers are remarkably efficient for producing the sound range they are designed for. Obviously high end tweeters aren't made to cover the low end as well as the high end, because well they're expensive and if you want to do some good bass then you are probably gonna do it right and purchase big ol subs.

i'd love to actually experience the sound of the horn tweeters and the spherical sub partners that med mentioned.

  • Horn speakers are efficient so you might save on the electronics.

But much better to take two champagne glass-shaped whirlbooth baths from the Caesars Poconos honeymoon resort [www.gofamilyvacations.com] and put waterproof drivers at the bottom. Shagadelic.

  • Parabolic horns do work, but then so does extending the horn backwards behind the speaker cone. This is the principle behind B&W's Nautilus speakers. The original one, that used a coiled horns for the base speaker (the cheaper, newer ones don't have horns behind the base cone) was a work of art! The only downside is they cost something like $100k!

  • Give me a pair of Klipsch Horns any day. Put these dodo looking things to shame. Plus you wouldn't need no stinking sub woofer.

  • Reeeeecooooolaaaaaaa!!

  • Switch the speaker for a high quality condencer mic and you can probably lady bugs have sex from 20 miles away.
