In Brief: PS3 Scaling Problems on Old HDTVs

ps3scaling.pngA lot of you are writing in wondering what the deal is with the PS3's scaling issues. Here's the straight shot.

•Lots of PS3 games run at 720p, natively.

•Lots of pre-2003/2004 era HDTVs don't do both 720p and 1080i, just one or the other.

•When a PS3 is connected to one of these legacy TVs that doesn't support 720p, the 720p games get dropped to a droopy 480p, instead of the happier 1080i res.

•Sony is working on a fix.

The Xbox acts differently:

•Xbox 360 does not do this; it runs everything at whatever setting you declare in the system menu.

Granted, tons of older HDTVs have this problem. But maybe you early adopters should use this as an excuse to upgrade to a nice flat panel. Use one of our black friday deals. Go ahead, you deserve it.

  • yup, i know i can't wait to drop another 1g+ on a comparable sized screen. this really should ahve been tested and resolved long before release.

  • I don't need an excuse to upgrade. I already have a nice flat panel. It's a 50" Panasonic Plasma and it doesn't do 720p. It has a beautiful picture and it's only 3 years old, so Sony won't be selling me a PS3 unless they fix the problem.

  • Flat panels (of any type) still pale in comparison to the PQ provided by a properly calibrated CRT display.

  • Sounds like they can patch it, funny though that's something that should have been obvious in testing unless they only tested the thing on new TV's.

Even if they knew it wouldn't have stopped them from releasing them, with the mobs of people having panic attacks to get one.

  • According to a Sony Press release, they haven't confirmed that they are working on a fix, only that they are looking into it. As the folks at Ars suggest, this likely means that it'll be some time before anything happens.

  • hell yeah.

My sister just got a 54" plasma for around a grand.... fuck yeah :)

  • at least they're trying to get a fix though, y'know?...

at least it's not KILLING the console... :P

  • XBOX 360 Will not however output 1080i over VGA. This affects many HDTVs. Many only support 1080i over Component OR VGA but not both. It will output 720p or 1080p but if your HDTV best is 1080i then your out of luck. At least for now.

  • hell, i dont even have an hdtv yet. so i dont really care about this problem. it will be patched out before i can get my hands on a ps3 anyways.

    go ps3!

  • When you say "Old HDTVs", don't you mean "'Old' HDTVs"?

  • This shouldn't be a problem for anyone with a Ps3. If you're stupid enough to A) wait in line for days to get one at cost, or B) pay a huge amount of money on ebay to get one without waiting, then you are also stupid enough to upgrade your television for a little bit better resolution on a VIDEO GAME. I've seen the Ps3 graphics on a normal tube, and they look pretty damn sweet. So, you are now quibbling over the differance from one lesser version of HDTV or a better version of HDTV. Yes, Sony should have tested and fixed this, but we all agree that Sony thinks it's consumers are stupid cows willing to buy whatever they toss out (and you've all proven with the stupidity around the release of the console this is true), so shut up about it. It's still HDTV. It still looks fucking sweet. And honestly, if you feel that one version of HDTV is that much better then another version, you are in the same class as Audiophiles and I pity the fact you'll never be happy with anything but THE BEST.

Fanboys suck, and I want to see them drown in a sea of bile and tears.

  • I happen to have one any takers

  • bigTrue said "It's still HDTV."

Actually, its not, and thats what the whole issue is about. If your TV only does 1080i, then it downscales 720p content to 480p. 480p is not HD.

But dont let that get in the way of your ranting... carry on.

  • Note that the 360 doesn't "run everything at whatever setting you declare in the system menu." It runs everything at whatever the game programmers felt like running given speed / quality tradeoffs, then resizes in hardware to whatever output you set it to.

The 360 does a great job of upsampling, though. I assume Sony would need to set aside a portion of the PS3's scheduler time if they wanted to do the same, time which is probably already spoken for in current games.

  • twonine,

My bad. I'd never heard the whole 480/720/1080 ratings until HDTV came out, and therefor assumed they were all just different levels of HD quality. I tend to not learn about new tech until I can afford it. This now makes more sense, but again just points to Sony taking an even bigger dump on those people that seem to love them the most. Gotta love corporations that really care about the people buying stuff, right?

On the price note, if this only is happening on early versions of the TV, this would tend to mean it would only be happened to people who dropped a large lump of cash on the tech as soon as it was available, since HD's have only been 'affordable' to the masses in the past year or so. This being said, if you were well off enough to buy new tech then, what's the problem in putting said early version of HDTV on craigslist for 500 bucks or so, selling it quick to some poor slop like myself who has no clue on the difference, and then spending another grand or so to pick up a decent current tech TV?

Maybe I'm mistaken (as obviously happens a lot) but if you were rich enough to pick up an early HDTV when they were super expensive, aren't you rich enough to pick up a better quality, moderately priced HDTV now after pawning off your earlier version to someone who's not as well informed?

As for the ranting, I won't let this misstep keep me from my words of slight wisdom and harsh truth (or a slight variation of either).

  • It's not about "if you're rich enough..."

It's about pissing off the target audience.

Please do not confuse early adopters with gadget freaks: the user who has to have the latest and greatest. For the gadget freak, it's about "I got a PS3 and therefore I pwn you."

At launch, the target audience is the early adopter: the user who will get the newest technology to be the first to try it out. The early adopter is expected to tout the actual features and advantages on sites such as this one. An early adopter is also likely to have an older HDTV that does not support 720p, a definite problem.

  • Although I plan un upgrading soon, I am currently using an older 4:3 HD CRT that doesn't support 720p. I run my 360 at 1080i but it doesn't letterbox the image correctly. This causes everything to be a bit thinner than they should be. It's annoying but worth it for the resolution. I've never had an issue with any DVD player doing this.
