Realizing that Samsung's BD-UP5000 was going to give the original hybrid BH100 a run for its money, LG announced the more competitive BH200 Super Blu Player for watching both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. It'll cost $999 when it ships in October, and will include support and features its $1,200 predecessor sorely lacked:
According to reports, the BH200 will have HDi support, 1080p output at 60Hz and 1080p upscaling of standard DVDs. It will be able to play audio CDs, and go online for bonus HD DVD content. It can also access a full complement of Blu-ray interactive features—where available—such as BD-Live, Blu-View or Picture-in-Picture.
At a similar price and feature set as Samsung's BD-UP5000 Duo HD, and now similarly bearing both the Blu-ray and HD DVD official logos, we'll be watching both of these mofos when they are available. Now tell me, why would you want a disc player that only plays one kind of HD disc? [Electronic House]

around the same price of buying 2 individual players.
@Type-E: Personally Id rather have a single player such as the one above but Im still not ready to drop $999 on it. I'll go to $650 for a hybrid player (maybe 7) but thats it.
Having a single player is good to streamline your setup and save space.
What sucks, of course, is if the unit dies. With two separate players, you at least have the option to go with the other format for the time being. It also makes upgrading A LOT easier if you're interested in a new player for one format, but not so interested in the other.
It's a tradeoff either way.
Few people will be buying these combo players until the prices goes way down, but maybe by then there will be 1 winner. Who knows? Right now I am really enjoying my xbox hd dvd player.
@iHeartApple: Of course I would prefer to have one player vs 2 players. I am saying that it's the same price as buying 2 players because normally, combo drives save you money, but in this case, it hasn't. I may in the future.
However, PS3 + hd-dvd player > this combo drive
because of gaming + hd playing.
@Type-E: You can get a Samsung BD-P1200 for $450 and an HD-A2 for $250, thus costing you $300 less. I don't really see that as "around the same price."
I'm not ready to give up 1 months rent just to buy a Hi-Def disc player.
I'm content with waiting until one or both of these formats is dead... I'll probably be making double what I am now by the time that time comes around, and I should be able to afford it.
