Nintendo Recalls Deadly Blogger-Hanging TV-Set-Exploding Wiimote Straps

wiimotechoke.jpgNintendo responded to butter-fingered whiners who've somehow managed let go of their Wiimotes, resulting in exploding TV sets, broken windows and blackened eyes. Heck, some bloggers (pictured at right) have even managed to get choked by the things. The company is offering to replace any straps, broken or not, for free, and each new Wiimote shipped with the Wii console now has an enhanced strap that won't break so easily.

Take a look at a comparison of the old and new straps, and find out how to get a new one:

The company asks you to take a look at the picture above and figure out whether you have one of the newer versions of the strap on your controller. If you have that slightly thinner original version, fill out this form and Nintendo says it will start shipping replacement straps on December 21. Our advice: just keep the damn thing in your hand. Idea: wash that lube off before you start playing Zelda.

You can also market them as "Pristine and unbroken"...if applicable.

wholGeisrud, my take on it is that if it's broken it's worth more, because now it isn't a danger to anyone, unlike the hazard-potential-fraught unbroken ones.

    Nice huh?

    sorry editing error there

  • Does this mean, if I'll get a free wiimote if i claim mine broke? and several others? will it get recalled and have new ones sent to me? I'd like a free wiimote. Their too expensive to buy with a nunchuck for 60 bucks. In canada on vacation, I went to future shop and walmart, both had wii stuff before launch, a wiimote was 45 and a nunchuck or classic remote was 25 bucks...70 bucks more for that stuff...I'll just import a nice wiimote for less than 20 from china...us wiimotes are made there too, so...doesnt matter.

  • i hope nintendo didn't ship the wiimote with sony batteries......

  • not to nitpick, but the blogger in the picture is hanging himself with the nunchuck cord, not the restraining strap.

  • Jeez, at our house we took off the strap, it just got it the way when you're passing the controller around in Wii Sports.

  • wow. So this recall just so happens to occur hours after I've spent $4something on two Wiimote straps off the Nintendo store. (I haven't broekn any straps... I'm just getting a couple for my DS.. ;p). Bad timing on my part nonethless.

  • To "FROST1":
You won't get a free Wiimote, Nintendo is only replacing the straps.

I'm worried that new players will forget and let go of the remote so I always require the use of the strap and caution often to hold on to the controller.

I'm curious as to whether the extra controllers one would buy will also ship with these enhanced straps. I bet there are still some that are already packaged with the older straps, would Nintendo let those sell and hope people fill out the forms or would they repackage them?

Finally, the new strap is thicker but I thought most of the breaking occurred at the point where the remote strap was attached to the plastic piece (the one in the shape of a Wii console, which itself is connected to the big arm strap) -- would this solve that issue effectively?

  • that picture reminds me of those "sidetalkin" photos from the Nokia orgininal nGage.

  • If you go to eBay, you can get WII serial numbers and get hundreds of straps sent to you fo free. And if you're selling on eBay, blur the serials on your WII auctions!

  • Wii is kind of like a Doomsday device for gamers.

TVs with black eyes, heads exploding... It even looks like Dr.s have a new medical term - "Wii Elbow" - the physical havoc Wii is exacting upon gamers tortured bodies.

  • Just dab some gorrilla glue one the strap where the plastic piece is and youll be fine.

  • I'd like to point out that most of the reasons that these straps are breaking are not due to faulty straps, they're due to people abusing the shit out of the remotes. Come on, you KNOW you fling the thing around when playing a game to try to get every little advantage. That's why it ended up as an appendage to your plasma TV, not because the strap broke.

  • Id like to point out that the person above me is an extremely ignorant commenter
    Yes, you vincedee,
The straps on the Wiimotes Have been breaking in very strange fashions, And not because people and simply chucking them at the wall and "abusing the shit out of them"
I HAVE HAD A WIIMOTE STRAP BREAK PLAYING BOWLING
The wiimote went flying into the wall and made a good size dent, I wasnt the one playing but i can 100% assure you that the person who was wasnt even using an excessive amount of force

This particular strap broke due to a Defect in the ACTUAL STRAP, The inner line (plastic) was shorter than the outer line (fabric) Whcih caused the fabric to break, put all the tension on the center of the inner line, Thus breaking the fabric , snapping the plastic, and separating the two (the plastic part remained on the wii strap and the fabric flew at the wall with the wiimote)

VinceDee, You are an idiot, Next time you want some attention you should comment at a Google Conspiracy theorists Forum... they'd love to hear your intricate theories.

  • Okay, dumbshit, since English is clearly not your native language let me actually provide evidence that people ARE abusing the wiimotes:

    Website all about the problem:
    http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com/index.php

    Notice some of the quotes?:

Nintendo says: "We have received some reports that when consumers swing the Wii Remote with the original version of the wrist-strap using excessive force and accidentally let go...."

(gee, what role do you suppose "excessive force" and "letting go" could possibly have in the breaking of wiimotes and their straps?)

Some guy decides to find out how much abuse the straps can take before they break: "In my scientific opinion, breaking wrist straps must be limited to those using the remote far, far beyond even the most wildly extreme playing condition, or those actually trying to break them. Reports of broken TV screens and ceiling fans are likely due to people not even using the wrist strap, which is their own fault."

"I was playing Wii Sports: Basball. I swung too hard and the controller went flying across the room hitting my wall. -Gavin"

(Swung too hard? Wouldn't that mean that he was using "excessive force"? It sure does)

Proof that people do, indeed, get carried away while playing: "With all my might I promptly slammed my hand (and Wii controller) into my oak coffee table. The Wii broke apart, cutting the inside of my finger (that's right-the Wii drew first blood!)"

Bowling and hits himself in the head. Tether doesn't break, though: "I was sitting on my futon and I guess I swung really hard to knock down the 50+ pins and all of the sudden I realized my head hurt. I was wearing the tether and it did not fail. Instead of it flying widly into the air it stopped and swung back around and hit me in the head"

And there are plenty more. Of course it couldn't hurt to have stronger straps on the wiimotes, but the biggest problem is that people are stupid and get too carried away while playing.

What you need to do is just return your Wii to the store, since you and your feeble friend aren't bright enough to be able to play with the device properly. Idiot.

  • My God, what world are we living in where people aren't safe to move their arms about in their own living rooms.

  • Cool! Free stuff, i like free stuff.

Any idea when they're going to let us Aussies get new ones? Can't seem to find anything on the .au site, and that form only allows Canada, and US on the Country section.
