PlayStation 4 To Be Neutered, Rendered Disc-Less

blurayprototype.jpgThe PlayStation 3 isn't out yet, but that doesn't stop Sony's Phil Harrison from making wild speculations about the capability of Playstation 4. According to him, the PS4 won't support physical discs. At all. He opines:

I'd be amazed if the PlayStation 4 has a physical disc drive.

So you mean in 5-10 years, our home's series of tubes/big trucks/broadband connections will be fat enough to download a 50GB game in a decent amount of time? We sure hope so.

But wait, Phil! You mean those precious Blu-ray discs that your company's humping so hard is going to be gone by the time PS4 is out? Oh wait, Kotaku's Ashcraft already beat me to that joke/conclusion. Damn you Ash! Damn you and your 16-hour head start.

  • A great title would have been [Sony gives up on Backwards Compatibility with PS4].

  • Tubes................

  • I'd be amazed if there even was going to be a playstation 4

  • Proof that Sony's a pimp. No, I don't mean that in a good way. Pervs.

  • Wait... It will be Backwards Compatible. Just that you have to download it, or theres a drive for all our precious old sch cd, dvd br disks.

This might juz be the future. Sony is hinting us with the future, 'We will be able to load huge amount of data in a short time.'

Its a great idea!! Just look at our MP3 players.. PS1 cassette player, PS2 CD player, PS3 MP3 compatible CD Player and the PS4 is an iPod. Load and Play.

  • It will run on the willpower of 500,000 Yellow Rubber Ducks.

  • not sure how that will work after all. If Sony (and M$) are loosing money on the system, how will they make money on the download/games? They need to offset the losses they take on the system, and how many people will pay 50+ for a game to download without having a backup disk? I don't pay 5.99 for a phone game in case my phone craps out, and I'll certainly not pay 49.99.

  • Nah, they'll get rid of the disk drive and put games on a read only memory which is enclosed in a plastic shell that has the game logo on it. You'll insert the game into a slot on top of the PS4. The games will load almost instantly as the memory that they are stored on is part of system memory.

I also figure the PS4 will have a new improved controller: It will have a single stick and one orange button.

This is totally the way forward I tell you.

  • Nice way to work in the Ted Stevens quote...

  • @nzruss

yea i totally see it man.... does the orange buton has a smiley printed on it?

  • playstation 4 come on how can sony say there will be a playstation you know what that will be in 10 years it will be a special upgrade systemboard you can somehow plug into the ps3 by means firewire/usb/ethernet

  • All i have to say is if there isn't somesort of VR for vid games in 10 years im done playin them seriously VR should be out by 2010 it is like we dont already have the technology and you all know they could alredy have it out in homes for personal use its just that the cost atm would be to great but in 10 years it would be lik $300-$600

THOSE WHO UNITE UNDER THE POWER OF THE LOTUS WILL LIVE FOREVER!!!!

  • i hope they do a ps4 cos i have nearly all of the ps range and i want one. my mate reckons its a waste getting the ps3 but i don't think so.

  • If the ps4 didn't have discs to get a good sized game on regular cable it would take days... and get rid of blu-ray that fast? Did phil harrison forget that even with a good sized hard drive you could ony download maybe 5 or 6 games? And what happens when you can download from other users? some jackass will probably find a way to make a virust to kll the ps3.
