U of Nebraska Bills the RIAA for Wasted Time

uofnebraska.jpgThe University of Nebraska isn't scared by the RIAA and their army of undead, soulless lawyers. No, they're refusing to hand over student data to the bullies, but what makes them even cooler is the fact that they're billing the RIAA for the time they've wasted. Hot damn, that takes balls.

Will the RIAA pay up? Doubtful, but this sends a clear message that the U of N isn't going to put up with their BS. First the ISPs, now the colleges. You just can't find an institution that'll bend over and take it, can you, RIAA?

  • Awesome. It brightens my day every time I see a story about somebody sticking it to the RIAA.

  • WOw. Nebraska just became cool. This is sweet.

They're probably the type of people who bill doctors for time spent waiting in the lobby of the Dr.'s office.

who EVER said the RIAA could act like GOVERNMENT?

  • What a concept, not releasing data on it's students without a subpoena. As a parent, I would expect nothing less from an institution I send my child to.

There was a time when colleges where held to a high moral standard. Now we applaud them for "doing the right thing".

If a single college rolls over and concedes to the RIAA's shameless threats, I believe we need to hold the colleges accountable as well.

Still, it's about time we started hearing some good news on the RIAA front. Make the RIAA work for it's lawsuits.

  • I like a college that supports and protects its students. My deepest respect to the Huskers and my greatest disgust at the RIAA.

  • That rocks! That put some sun into my forecast for this rainy day.

  • Wow, way to go Nebraska! Maybe they're not a bunch of red neck know nothing hill billies after all.

  • There should be an artist class action lawsuit against the RIAA for taking money artist should have gotten and in return getting a bill from U of N.

  • "You just can't find an institution that'll bend over and take it, can you, RIAA?"

Yes they can. My wonderful alma mater, The University of Michigan.

Remember that story a week ago (or maybe more) about the University complying with the RIAA's demands for student info? Something tells me that there's some significant money coming from RIAA members to the Alumni Association or something... Makes me want to cancel my membership.

  • Make that 2 - The University of Tennessee at Knoxville :

  • way to go nebraska!!!

  • Nice to finally see people fight back, this should be a milestone for the RIAA Boycott!!! Good Job!

  • Yea, Clarkson Univ has no problem with helping the RIAA

  • The "N" is of "Knowledge"!

As an NU grad I would like to say:

Way to stick it to the Man, UNL! And thumbs up to Information Services for taking a stand!

  • Go Big Red!

  • Fan-freakin'-tastic! Yay, Nebraska!

  • I'm thinking this should be a precedent setting event. If every ISP/network admin charged the same hourly rate the RIAA's lawyers do in order for their dirty work to move forward, maybe, just maybe, the Really Irritated Assholes of America would give up.

  • this really brings up the question:
    WWMSD?
    what would my school do?
I bet you that they would go in on it with the RIAA only if the RIAA agreed to pay them a portion of the money received.

  • Come a runnin' boys
Don't you hear that noise like the thunder in the sky
How it rolls along in a good old song
    From the sons of Nebraski.
Now it's coming near with a rising cheer
That will seep all foes away,
    So with all our vim
We are bound to win and we're going to win today.

    For Nebraska and the scarlet
    For Nebraska and the cream,
Tho' they go thru many' a battle,
    Our colors still are seen.
So in contest and in vict'ry
We will wave them for the team,
And 'twill always stir a Cornhusker,
The old scarlet and the cream.

  • Wow. Welcome to Canada 5 years ago.

  • You just can't find an institution that'll bend over and take it, can you, RIAA?

Yeah they can. It's called Congress.

  • That University must have VERY lenient plagiarism policies then.

  • Hoo - Yah!!! About time!!

    @ANoel

"who EVER said the RIAA could act like GOVERNMENT?"

dalziel answered your question. That right/privilege/power/ was given to them by congress by the people we voted for so essentially, it's our fault!

  • Being a musician, and Disabled, I can say that this whole dialog is wrong. Protecting thieves does not put a college on a high moral ground. I can understand that, as Left-wing controlled institutions, they would support slave labor, and the disrespect of the hard-working individual, but the fact remains that Slavery was abolished about 150 years ago.
How do you think we make our living ? The Madonnas, Michael Jacksons and Bruce Springsteens are less that 1% of the musicians out there, and the other 99% barely make ends meet as it is - and now we have college students... the leaders of tomorrow... stealing from some of the poorest people in society. What are these students gonna be like when they enter the real world ?
If you steal independent music, you'll end up with strictly Gov't backed (sanctioned) garbage.
