Warner Combats Chinese Pirates With $1.50 DVD

When some Wong is selling bootlegs of your product on the streets of Nanjing for 6 RMB (75 cents), your only choice is lower your prices. Warner Home Video is offering a trial run of the DiCaprio flick The Aviator for 12 RMB ($1.50). This relatively low price is achieved by packaging the disc in a cardboard folder instead of our luxurious plastic boxes. Despite this move, local distributors say the best way to fight bootleggers is to shrink the window between theatrical and home distribution. Maybe if we start pirating really really hard, movie studios will stop reaming us with prices on next-gen DVD titles.
