I love this "ad," as it makes the very good point that the only people who see those obnoxious anti-piracy ads are people who legitimately pay for either DVDs or buy movie tickets. Pirates get that patronizing crap cut out of their product. Much like the RIAA, the MPAA loves removing value from the product they want you to pay for.
MPAA, you're on notice.

Awesome. Now just make sure Giz-readers aren't the only ones seeing this.
And why do I get those trailers plugged in at the beginning of a movie I bought? I didn't pay to get advertised to.
I like trailers and all that stuff but I wished ALL DVDs allowed me to skip EVERYTHING in the beginning so I can get to the menu and dvd quickly.
Screw those that make me watch all the trailers and blah warnings!
as much as I'd like to agree with you, the pirates go into the theaters to record the movie,and/or buy DVDs to rip them off, so they read these obnoxious anti-piracy ads.the rest of them downloading or buying, don't see them, but the sources does.anyway,these ads should go since it doesn't scare them at all
It always killed me that they would play anti-piracy ads before movies in the theater, too.
Sometimes I'd actually call out, "but we paid!"
Yeah, that warning is WAY outdated. I may have read it the first time I popped a movie in, but now I don't pay any attention to it anyway.
I don't really mind it. It gives me a chance to take a leak, and get a fresh beer.
So funnee! My brother tried to get in to the FBI once. I knew he wasn't their material, and so did they.
Now, Mister-FBI wannabee, showed me how to rip a DVD, and how to remove all the "jetsam" such as menus, other audio tracks and languages. Actually makes for a smaller fit. And really, I like it better, as illegal it might be.
Yeah, FBI warning...nobody reads that. And if I can't skip the previews, I eject the disc and send it back. Thus renting is better than own.
@Sunatic:
the pirates don't only include the rippers. if you've ever downloaded a movie ... you're a pirate (nyar)!
the downloaders far outnumber the rippers so it's plenty safe to say that the "pirates" never see the warning.
@CBMTTek:
so does the "pause" button.
I think you mean flotsam.
As illegal and heinous a crime it is, I have ripped and reburned all of my movies and taken out the extra crap i don't like (trailers, warnings, other languages) so i pop in the disc and it comes up at the menu first thing. Now if they got rid of those warnings for me, or at least just modified the .ifo file to allow for skipping, i would be a happy camper.
as for anti piracy warnings, are they really putting those on dvd's now? like the "i'm joe, im a stunt performer, by pirating movies you are hurting me and my wallet!" ads? I have yet to see any of those on dvd's, but perhaps they are authored differently up here in the great white north.
Hell up here it used to be legal to download mp3's as long as you bought an mp3 player and payed that strange tax.
@Paradise: yea but the rippers are the source.so this warning is made to stop the source.no rippers=no downloader.
and I never said I download movies:D (nyar)! :p
(i love my sweet dvd player!)
What a coincidence, I was just thinking about this today. All those ads before the movies in the theaters crack me up because the only people who see it are paying customers and, by the MPAA's own definition, aren't seen by people who pirate (because people who pirate movies never pay to see them legitimately.
Blitzcat:
Jetsam is stuff that is jettisoned to lighten the load of ship that is in threat of sinking (or otherwise needs to lighten its load). Flotsam merely describes stuff that is floating around from a sinking ship.
Thus, jetsam is a more appropriate term because you are actually jettisoning stuff from the DVD to make it "lighter."
DVD warnings are stupid. All pre-menu content should be skippable.
@tinyhands: then print it out and plaster your town... what? Who said that?
Those adds are one of the reasons I use a Linux box to watch my dvds (mind you, I didn't go through all the trouble of setting a machine just for watching DVDs, I also use it as a server for different things, mainly all my music and photos)
With Xine, press F1 twice and there you are, at the main menu!
Yeah, I never understood the "punish the consumer" dichotomy that the MPAA currently uses. It sure ran me off from MPAA products. Good work there MPAA marketing guys, you ran off another source of funds. You guys are so stupid.
I never understood UOPs period. That's partly why I love using VLC to watch DVDs over any other DVD playing software (minus FOSS stufF) or set-top DVD players (excluding my hacked XBox): UOPs are ignored. Down with region coding and down with UOPs!
If they want to show it, fine - just let me skip it (or anything else I don't want to view). Same goes with the super-fancy main menus that make you wait before you can hit PLAY.
That reminds me of the time when my friend and I wanted to see Fast and the furious but it wasn't out yet so we downloaded it and that "You wouldn't steal a car, you wouldn't steal a TV" ad came on and we looked at each other and started laughing so damn hard!
@Sunatic
this anitpiracy crap has been on dvd's back in the day even before mp3's were around. There was always this unskipable ad about if you buy a pirated video (yeah vhs), youd be getting a rough deal and wouldnt get your money back if you would complain (this is the uk), at least on the vcr we could fast forwards this crap.
The should force whoever came up with the ingenius idea of having these fixed messages pop up on nearly every dvd, to watch just the warning a thousand times over clockwork orange style. I am guessing the people who come up and eforce this crap dont watch alot of movies oin the first place, hence the problem.
I dunno, i don't mind the odd movie i...umm..rent...yeah, that's it...having the anti-piracy notices still in place, kinda righteous irony :)
Sort of like how DRM doesn't hurt anyone who pirates music, only those who legally pay for it.
Thanks for the VideoLAN VLC pointer. Now I'm finally watching the PURCHASED Region 2 DVDs that my mum sent!
i just don't buy movies. I rent them.
I gotta say, I think it's actually a pretty crappy ad with horrible typography, layout, graphics, and way too much information crammed into a small space to be effective.
Cute picture though.
