iPhone Lines Across the USA, a Gallery By You

The moment of truth approaches on the East Coast and shadows lengthen all across America as the lines forming to get an iPhone lengthen at the same time. We've seen lazy-ass rentacops on Segways telling people they can't sit, a Santa Monica newsbabe caked with makeup, and even the Philly mayor getting in on the line-waiting action. WTF is going to happen next? Send an iPhone line photo (one per person, please) to Giz to this email address: iphoneline@gizmodo.com. Then return here to see the gallery grow.

More tools than a Snap-On distribution center.

    Hope it was worth it.

  • Enough!!!
I am going to stay away from your site for a few days till you calm down about a shitty, underpowered phone from Apple!
You are worse than fucking Microsoft!!

  • East Coast Report: Less than 10 hours to go.
Drove by my AT&Tingular store. No one in line. Only one security guard at the door. This was at 8am East Coast time this morning, which is probably like 10am the night before west coast time. Sorry guys...lol

@Rustydog: I think this has now become less about how 'incredible' the JesusPhone is and more about how much of a spectacle it has become.

  • this isn't across the usa, just in NY. not happening here in houston. stores with lines only have a couple people in them.

  • @jonyah: If you click through the gallery, you will indeed see that most of these pics are from places other than NYC and SF. We've got Omaha in there, somewhere in Indiana, New Mexico. So yeah, it is across the USA. Tell your friends! iphoneline@gizmodo.com

  • First in line, last in life.

  • I agree with rustydog... you've jumped the shark, in your own excitement forgotten to be relevant. I'm actually a little embarrassed for Gizmodo.

  • LOL i bet all the people in line read gizmodo.

  • @Rustydog: At first I thought Rustydog's comment was a bit harsh. But after looking over the site...wow...like 2 out of every 3 posts is about this stupid phone. I agree it looks cool, but can't you have some self-control? lol

Maybe I'm just bitter because I can't afford one, nor could I use one (VZW customer here).
    :(

  • chicago has 60+. im not giving those idiots more satisfaction by taking a picture of them. the fucking local news is doing that already. i may avoid the giz until monday...

  • They all look like a bunch of emo depressed 17 year olds for the most part.

  • I have a PPC...have had it for the last 2 years. Looking at the list of features that are not on the iPhone makes me wonder...do these people even look around for tech or are they so tunnel-visioned with Apple that they don't care?

    Lemmings, man....lemmings.

Is it me or do the lines seem small (from a guy that's seen lines wrap around Frys for Vista)Looking at the *massive* (:-p) lines, I hope that guy doesn't get trampled over by himself.

  • Gizmodos been over run by narcissists... since they are stuck in line covering this crap, ALL their coverage must be too.

  • Uh, that second picture from Philadelphia has Mayor John Street in it. The guy with the crossed legs.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city, 200 murders have been committed since Jan. 1, making Philadelphia the murder capital of the country. And John Street waits in line for an iPhone.

  • I tried to open Gizmodo and filter out "iPhone", all I got was a blank page. BaZing!

  • I suggest that we look at something more thought-inspiring than a bunch of photos of people who need to get a life. Here's my question/theory to Giz commenters:

IS APPLE'S iPHONE/iTUNES ACTIVATION PROCESS A TROJAN HORSE FOR EVEN BIGGER THINGS?

    Here are my thoughts:

Something wonderful is going to happen at 6:00 PM on June 29, 2007 - and it isn't the introduction of Apple's iPhone. Don't get me wrong - that will be a great thing, too, and I intend to get one (although I'm not about to stand in a queue all night - I'll just order online and let Mr. FedEx drop it at my door).

No, the great thing that will be happening is that, for the very first time in the 20+ years of cellular phone sales history, you won't have to go through the activation process in the store where you bought the phone.

With no disrespect meant to the hard-working salespeople in retail I can tell you that my experiences in getting phones activated (and I've gone through this, conservatively speaking, about 25 times) has been uniformly unpleasant. It's a mysteriously long, convoluted and repetitive process that makes you feel like the Tin Man - frozen in time - being serviced by the Scarecrow (if they only had a brain).

Why the process couldn't be more automated has always been a source of frustration to me; in a world of web sites, over the air programming and broadband access isn't this something that I could do myself?

Rather than take up too much comment space here about it, if you're interested you can read the rest of my take on it here:

  • So why does everyone have to wait until the oddball hour of 6 p.m. to get their iPhone? Steve Jobs says democracy demands it be so.

Has anyone heard anything about a phone Apple is releasing?

  • I'm with Rustydog, I'll be back after this BS is over with.

    Also, strider_mt2k, nice.

  • @strider_mt2k: Best comment since your HoF induction. :-) Better keep it up....'cause if you dont! *shakes fist*

  • I drove by a Cingular store last night @5:30p in Studio City- there was NO LINE despite signed touting the release of the jesusPhone.

BTW- Who would buy 1st generation Apple hardware, anyway? Nothing really gets shaken out until, at least, the 2nd iteration.

  • What I would like to see is a list compiling all the line lengths so we can compare and see where to go. Any ideas or links?

  • I wonder what all of these people are going to do with their camp out gear when it's 6pm, take it in the store with them? That's gonna take up a whole lotta room. Leave it outside so it can get jacked?

    Hmmmmm dilemma dilemma

  • The line isn't very long at the apple store in burlington MA. The cingular store upstairs has no line at all.

  • @SchruteBuck: no, do tell

  • these lines don't even compare to the playstation3 lines

  • Its like a bad nightclub ... make the lines bigger and you think that everyone wants to be there.

  • Any editors reading... please remove my contact info off my post for Apple Store - Perimeter Mall Atlanta

    thanks :-)

  • There's no line up in Ogdensburg, NY. There are no iPhones in Ogdensburg. Our AT&T store isn't even selling them. They are not a "corporate" store. The nearest "corporate" store is in Watertown, an hour away.

All the employees, however, in my hometown AT&T tell me the iPhone is a piece of junk.

  • The battery is not nearly powerful enough for the apps Apple propose to crank out on it, coupled with the poor network choice, its gunna be an expensive alarm clock in a few months…

There are much better phones out there for a lot less cash... but again, Apple do so very well with marketing and Hype that a lack lustre product like this, has people cueing round the block for one, or two! Geesh.

  • [I've posted this on a couple of posts, but it fits best here]

I was going to send a picture of the line in Little Rock, AR, because I was the first (at 2:00PM, for some reason)... But they came out to tell me not to wait, because they had "already sold their first shipment to 'premier customers,'" and that I would have to pay today, and then get my phone in the mail on Monday or Tuesday...

Not only that, but I would have to set up the options in the store with them...

So not only did they break the rules set down by Apple (and allegedly AT&T corporate), they are making me set up my account and pay today at their store...

Why do I feel that "premier customer" means "bribed the employees..."?

  • In Eric Cartman's words,
"If there's one thing I hate, all the lines, lines, lines, lines!"

  • There's a bigger line for Starbucks than there is for AT&T over here.

  • I drove by the AT&T store here in Gulfport, MS and there were around 30 people in line. I've been off/on about wanting the iPhone, but finally decided on the Sony Ericsson w810i a couple of weeks ago (and bought a 4GB card for it). It can play back music, 2mp camera, and EDGE is supported. It just doesn't have a fancy schmancy touchscreen and a full-blown internet browser and it wasn't $500 :P

  • @sweethomephilly: So the guy can't have a day off?
    What is he, Spider-Man?

  • My favorite part of this gallery is all the personal phone numbers, email addresses, and IM screen names of people who didn't bother to exclude their signatures from the emails they sent in.
