Top 8 Indicators That You'll Line Up for an iPhone

Many of us are lusting after the iPhone, but are all of us? Are you one of the people most likely to buy a phone when it's released on June 29? Solutions Research Group did an online survey of American consumers last month, and found out some intriguing information about who is actually going to be standing in those long lines at the end of this month. So here they are, the top 8 InfoModo numbers: Who's buying an iPhone?

So let's get this straight: you're a rich, college-educated guy with an iPod, probably living in New York or California, and you'll be ditching your cellphone carrier sometime soon.

  • I don't need a report to know that i'm buying an iPhone

  • 2 out of 10 - I'm safe :)

  • Shoot. Numbers don't lie (unless it's new math) so I guess that's that, I am going to get an iphone. Now to break the bad news to my landlord: Rent's gonna be late.

  • I'm not buying one till the price = the price * .5

and it'll probably be seriously outdated by that time. So I guess I'm not buying one.

10 out of 10: 32, NYC, College Educ., etc.(I'm interpreting the last one as 52% DO have an iPod. I hate it when statistics confirm I have no free will.

11 out of 11: "Is letting his better-paid wife buy the iPhone and then will wait until she tires of it."

  • My recently-breast-augmented fiancĂ© decided that if I get an iPhone, she will take the ring and scratch "iDon't" on the face of it.

So. Your statistics are a lie.

  • % of iphone buyers that have ever seen a foodstamp...0

  • Image of 92BuickLeSabre 92BuickLeSabre at 10:36 AM on 06/07/07 *

@Eliboat - class mobility is increasingly difficult in this country, but it has still been known to happen.

Maybe near 0% with exponential rate of decrease, but it ain't absolute 0%.

  • I will merrily continue to type away upon the Ocean whilst the masses (can only fanboys = masses? discuss.) clamor and line up to eventually fumble their way through touch screen text messaging.

  • Won't buy one until they appear unlocked. Can't deal with Cingular/AT&T

  • who could possibly be digging this? Where are the numbers showing the drop in Apple stock after the iphone comes out? So would that mean the every fanboy with a man-purse will not only lose $600 on the phone but also whatever is lost in the market?

I will not be lining up or buying one.

  • So, college educated males, in their 30's, that make more than $75k, and live in CA or NY will make up the majority of iPhone owners.

Damn, if only I lived in NY or CA then I could get one.

  • besides the rich part it sounds just like me! however i will give it a while until i can at least play with one in the store for 5 mins.

  • I won't be buying one until the price comes down alot and they appear on Verizon's network.

  • This is one where I will not volunteer to become an early adopter. If anything I'll wait for iPhone v2. Besides, I'm happy with my HTC Hermes right now.

Now, what Apple should do is make the iPod version 6 be just like the iPhone sans communication/cellular functions. That I would buy but not for $400 or $600, unless it also had PDA functions.

  • i didn't really fit in those categories. 16 year old high school student. Guess they don't want me to buy an iPhone

  • 2wordz - Military Discount!

  • The by carrier stat is the most interesting: T-Mobile subscribers are the most interested in the iphone. Perhaos because many of them first subscribed like I did to Voicestream back when the first Treo came out...hey, history is repeating itself...

  • God I hate being stereotyped. Of course, anyone with a household income of $75,000 in California or New York shouldn't be blowing the dough on an iPhone and expensive cell plan. You hear me, guys? Staaaaaaaaay hoooooooome on the 29th. So I can get mine.

  • Wrong age, wrong country, wrong income, right sex, no carrier, ... I'll wait for the demographic to round itself off so sorry old bastards like me can pick one for a song in SE Asia...

    Should be about six weeks....

    Okay, maybe 12...

    ;0)

Actually still don't see why I would want one... maybe I'll wait a couple of years.

  • Good to know that I statistically will not buy an iPhone when in reality I'd never even think of buying an iPhone...ever...

  • I'm taking bets after its released, on how many minutes it will take for someone to post a crack for the iPhone so it will operate unlocked. Any takers?

  • @92BuickLeSabre

I am not sure where you get 10 out of 10... But maybe it's 7 out of 8 since your college education has failed you.

  • mthrndr says:
Won't buy one until they appear unlocked. Can't deal with Cingular/AT&T

Well, then you can forget about the Visual Voicemail feature. That's done on the network side. It will never work with another carrier unless Apple signs up with them as well.

  • I won't be getting one for the fact that I'm not sold on it.

I like the ipod side of it but thats about it.

Not to mention I will never go to Cingular.

I'll wait for the next video ipod which will hopefully be the same minus the phone and pda.

  • I'm not buying one. I have another year on my cingular contract. By the time it's up version two will be out with hopefully at least 20GB. I want to touch before I buy... I make a trip to the apple/cingular store to check it out. Saw it at macworld... Me want touchy!

  • I'm not buying one... because I don't need a new phone, i just bought a krzr. It works just fine. If they take the phone part out and sell it like a pda-iPod offspring, I would spring for one as soon as it came out

  • Again, the clowns posting 'I won't buy one until it's cheaper!' Look, just admit you can't afford it, not that it's not worth the money.

As far as contracts go, there is no subsidy for upgrading, so you can be day 31 into a contract and you can buy an iPhone at the $500/$600 price point.

Oh, there won't be any discounting for this, for ANY reason, 'military discount'? Hah.

  • Maybe, but need to grope first. If it will be a big enough improvement over my 3 year old iPod... done deal.

  • Looks like there won't be many folks driving their john deere mower down to the att store on the 29th.

  • Eh, not surprising that 72 percent is male. Nor that the largest piece of the pie consist of those from 25-34. Of course I'd like to see the number of those buying such a neat but silly gadget that have kids or are married for that matter. Not that it matters, those who want the latest gadget will get it, but it would be interesting. Of course I guess its no surprise that I'm not going to get one, I'm just a 22 year old college student (not that I need more crazy gadgets that I can't live without).

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 01:18 PM on 06/07/07 *

THE WEB-STATS HAVE SPOKEN. THERE IS NO NEED FOR NEGOTIATION REGARDING SURRENDER. THERE ARE NO TERMS. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

  • I fit the demographics very well and I am interested in the phone... BUT--
    - It is unavailable on Verizon
    - The price is WAY too steep.

  • Ha ha that was funny! I am I guess 8 out of 10. Lets see I don't own an ipod and I have sprint. But you know what - I'm not getting the iPhone.

  • If you don't want one, great - but I think everyone who says they are not buying one really, really has to vow not to buy one. Don't pull a Billy Donovan and be looking over the shoulder as we blaze through 7 screens in 15 seconds or type a note in 4 second ... and then start to make excuses that you never actually said you wouldn't buy one ... if you say it, you are imposed 5 years.

  • I sold my iPod because I always will use a PPC (HTC kaiser is next) and I want a phone that uses UMTS/HSDPA. The iPhone cannot let me edit my MS Office apps and let me change batteries. I know my girlfriend will want one though.

  • I want to love this phone...I want to interact with an inspired used-centered interface...And I would be willing to pay $600 even, IF...

-The phone is dual GSM/CDMA (I'm not even asking for dual SIM slots, but that would be cool too)
    -Unlocked
    -3G in both radio standards

    I figure that'll be about 2-3 years.

As long as the carriers dictate to the handset designers the users will never have all that is possible in current technology.

  • I know I'm only 17, but I think that the estimate that 48% of buyers do not own an iPod is a little high. I think that it is the iPod users who will primarily by this. When you look at an iPod, you think, "I could find a whole bunch of mp3/multimedia players for cheaper, that'll support a wider variety of video and audio types, etc." The reason you buy an iPod is because of the OS and the ease of use/syncability (if that's even a word). The point is, you could buy a phone that does everything the iPhone does for a whole lot cheaper, but it's the way it executes its tasks, how easy the OS is to use, that makes people want to buy it. And I think that only iPod and Apple users can truly understand that, and bridge that justification of spending $500-$600 on a phone.

  • Reasons why I will not get an iPhone.

    1. Not on Verizon's network =( still in contract and like Verizon's cell service anyway.

    2. Phone has a slow processor.

    3. No expansion slot?

    4. My Windows Mobile Smartphone is outfitted to look JUST AS sexy as the iPhone...There's many skins to make a WM phone EXACTLY like an iPhone.

    5. I have Picsel Browser which ROX. Then there's Deep Fish so the iPhone's browser? Yea, no big deal.

Things I HATE about my SmartPhone.

    1. WM does crash once in a blue moon (but let's see iPhone).

    2. My phone's battery life is absolutely horrible.

    3. My phone's size is too big.

So I guess I have more reasons NOT to get an iPhone...but still nothing is perfect out there.

  • Apple made a mistake with the iPhone. I fit some of the demographics and can tell you that I would rather spend $300 on this device without the pda functions and without the phone functions. The market for this device is too niche. Besides, phones get really beat up over the period of just a year. The durability of the iPhone touchscreen looks to be poor. What good is a beautiful looking product if it has to be wrapped up in a case all of the time to protect it.

The only good thing about the iPhone is that after it comes out, Apple stock should come down again so I can purchase some shares at a reasonable price before Leopard and the new iMacs come out.

    d

  • Looks like technically I should be buying one. Trouble is my current phone (ETEN X500) is better in every way that counts to me.

  • cingular + iphone = more monthly fees for stuff I never used.

btw...not to be a nag...but am I the only one who could care less about the release of the iphone? I can wait an extra couple months to cop it for 45 bucks with a plan before christmas hahahahaha

  • Well, my wife wants one bad, and will likely get one. She's well off, college educated, with an iPod, living in Pennsylvania, and we're already with AT&T.

Well, three out of eight ain't bad.

    Oh wait. yes it is.

  • Well, my fiancĂ©e and I both want one. We fit the age, education, iPod owning and income categories, and already have at&t, but won't spend $600 on a phone that's totally unproven (or even one that's proven) no matter how much we love it.

It could go either way, IMHO. I could see one, grope it, unpants it, and go buy one, but I sure won't be lining up on the 29th.

  • Wrong wireless carrier. Won't be a hit until an EV-DO version is available for Sprint - particularly due to their less expensive and less restrictive data service for smartphones compared to Verizon.

  • Dude, it's the iphone. It will sell even if the ebaymarket get the price raised to $1000.

  • These stats are usesless.

Half of the people that vow to never get one are secretly in love with it.

The phone is over priced and thats just it and it will remain overpriced just like most apple products that do 1/2 the stuff they say they can do as "innovations"..yet the fanboys and the ads(media) will make everyone want to get one.

On another note, I would consider getting one a lot more if it was a different provider and more space to put stuff in there( common 4GB for pics, music, movies, tv shows, etc..gimmie a break.

You guys think they will be as scratch prone as the current Video Ipods are or the old nanos?

  • Statistics aside. I'm earning minimum wage and saving up for 6 months just to get the cutting edge phone and Apple device. I will also be selling my iPod(s) crappy metroPCS razr and other stuff. Most of one weekly paycheck will pay my phone bill. Its a big risk for me but I'm still going to stand in line on the 29th determined to buy one. Hope that I will be 30 making the $75K and living in SF like the statistics say I should, lol.

  • I fit some of the profiles though I DO NOT own an ipod...yet (was holding out for a 100GB model) I will probably swing by the local Cingular store on that day to look at one, but only if it's not too crowded. I would like to get some hands on time before I sign a contract. I already switched to Cingular last year in anticipation of this and their service is excellent (I've had Sprint and then Verizon and they were so bad I wanted to kill someone) but the Sony Ericsson phone I bought (unlocked/unbranded/no contract) was over $400 and it's still a piece of crap.

It will be refreshing to finally have a phone that isn't a big steaming turd.

  • mechanisma22:

Is the short lived enjoyment and fame from owning an iPhone worth the headaches of going into more debt because you can't pay your bills on time? I could probably swing the price of the phone and the cell plan but why bother. I've been in your shoes my friend and can tell you from my experience that this device will introduce more stress into your life than bring enjoyment. Think about how you'll feel about the device after you drop it a of couple times.

Just some friendly advice. Save your money, go to college, and when you graduate, buy an iPhone when the cell providers subsidize the price.
