Incase Protective iPhone Cover Tested (Verdict: OK)

This Incase Protective cover is the first piece of iPhone retail-bait I couldn't resist in the Apple store. The good: It's the sleekest of all cases in stock there, so it won't make your iPhone look like a Tonka truck; it's rubberized, available in black, red, and grey; and has a neat topographical pattern all over it that supposedly helps grip; cutouts or ridges for all buttons; helps the iPhone fit snuggly in iPod docks.

The bad:

It's isn't actually so skinny that it allows handset to dock with the Apple iPhone dock, despite it being the sleekest around (see photo), requiring me to remove the case or just use the dock cable alone. You should be acutely reminded that this won't help protect your screen, but this isn't so much a fault as a part of the design. (Maybe it'll work well with the Invisible Shield coating. The company says it won't impact the touchscreen's sensitivity, but we've yet to test that out.) As I remove the case for docking reasons, it is starting to stretch out, like a wizard's sleeve. That could be a problem as debris falls in between the sleeve and the iPhone. (I think this would result in abrasions, not pearls.) This should cost $15, not $30, and Incase, you know it.

Verdict: I'm satisfied with it.

Does one need to be reminded that you cannot put a protective screen over a touch screen?

  • i got the red one and am too very please with the perfomance of this case.... yesterday i dropped my iphone on the road, but it just bounced a little and didn't get hurt at all... but yeah, 30 was a bit much...

  • Stretching early - like sleeve of wizard...hmmm...is it also no longer good on plow?

  • Pope: Of course you can. Try it. I am able to manipulate the iPhone's touch screen through TWO business cards.

  • I think the colors that they come in are actually Grey, Black and Red (not Grey, Blue and Red).

I picked up the black one recently as it looked the nicest of the available cases (I didn't want one with the plastic/rubber pieces covering the front of the phone). So far it's nice - you get a much better grip on it and the rubber "lip" on the front of the case provides enough bulk that you could put the iphone face down and the rubber would prevent the screen from touching the surface.

I wish it had some sort of protection on the front (even just a flip cover) and also would've liked a belt loop, clip or some sort of connection on the back.

One strange thing is how the packaging states you can use it with the dock when you obviously can't.

It is a little overpriced for a 3rd party case that is so basic.

  • Well I remember my clip case for my 4G iPod and the thing didn't even have access to the screen. Now that I think about it, Apple always seems to cover the screen up with their protective cases - it becomes a pain pulling the thing out every time you want to switch a song...

  • I ended up getting the red one on the spur of the moment and it's saved my iPhone more than once. For some reason phones just fly out of my hand. I just noticed Vaja came out with one that looks similar. I was thinking of getting it, but it doesn't protect the top frame part like my Incase does. But it does look nice too.

  • Has anyone noticed the remarkable absence of people complaining about iPhone scratches? Looks like the screen and metal case hold up as promised. Apple deserves credit for avoiding this huge problem which plagued the iPod nanos. Maybe you don't really need a case or screen protector. Has anybody out there scratched theirs?

  • kind of ugly... do they have one that doesn't look like a wrinkly old man?

  • I've tried it and the speck is superior, though this is better then that belkin crap.

  • Yeah, Pope.

I've had a protective screen on my DS touch screen from day one. It works great!

  • I read reviews where people say dirt somehow gets trapped in this case and scratch up the silver parts of the iPhone.

  • This looks like it'd be useful for people who drop/bump their phones often. If I end up getting the iPhone, I won't be covering it up with anything! But you can believe I'm going to have some nice cushy case to slide it into/out of whenever. Just like my sweet freakin' 80gb VPod. Apple makes cool stuff, and I'm NOT fanboy type. Just the facts, maam, just the facts!

  • OGHOWIE... Agreed. This is a FACT. The "microdust" (aka. pocket lint) from my pants gets behind the sleeve due to it not being a SUPER tight fit. I put mine on as soon as my phone was activated and now the chrome trim has tons of micro abrasions on it. It's also starting to stretch a bit like my wife. Damn...I do like how it gives you more grip though.

  • i have it, and am thoroughly happy with it. it's easy to take off and put on (for docking)and really helps you get a grip on it.

  • I have the speck version that comes with a belt clip also. Warning: the phones fall out of these belt clips easily.

Pope: you absolutely can use a screen protector - and its great. Fewer smudges.

  • I have the iSee from Contour Design. Doesn't cover up the beauty of the phone and gives me great protection. Got it two days ago, so far no problems at all.

  • @Pope John Peeps II: yes, you can... i have a protective screen over my DS touchscreen, and it still works just fine... i can use my finger or the stylus, and i still don't have problems...

  • Got the black one, and I can say for SURE if you do take it in and out a lot, the case WILL stretch a bit. It's a lot better than some of those eBay cases selling out there for $5, which by the way I bought as well. Thin, flimsy, and very very loose fitting!

  • It definitely comes in black... I'm looking at mine right now. And yes, it does stretch out. Number one complaint here.
Oh, and the screen protectors I bought (crystal film set from Power Support) work extremely well. I like the feel of them more than using my finger on the iPhone's glass (which I had already been quite fond of).

  • I use the sleeve that came with my 60gb iPod Photo. It's a bit thicker than the phone, so I have a ghetto-looking rubber band holding it snug. The reason I like this system is because the inward-buckle along the sides gives me a spot to store my Belkin jack adapter between the rubber band and the case.

I will eventually buy a case from iQase though, they have some nice ones that I like.

  • Any case or sleeve is bound to fuglify whatever it's meant to protect. I like to keep my iPhone in its natural state, just like G... er, Jobs intended.

Stretching is a problem because you're constantly taking it off for the dock. I will correct the blue/black thing. Thanks dudes and ladies.

  • I have yet to scratch my iPhone. I think if you had a job like a building contractor, then a case would make sense. Otherwise, it's very sturdy. I've already dropped it once and it looks identical to new. A case just isn't needed.

I have scratches on the steel rim, which is weird. But the glass is looking fine except for my copious face grease. Knock on wood.

  • @Brian - have you tried the Spek yet? I found it to hold/protect a good deal more as it covers over the top and bottom of the face of the phone, as well as the sides (narry a scratch on my iPhone thus far).

  • I bought the DLO Jam Jacket. It covers the top and bottom of the screen, too. It's bulky, because it has a thing on the back to wrap the ear buds on, but that is fine by me because the extra bulk makes it easy to hold on to.

Oddly, my iPhone had a few tiny scratches on the bottom of the bezel when it was fresh out of the box.

  • I got the same case, I like it a lot, but I only use it if I'm taking the iPhone somewhere scary.

I also have the screen protector, and it looks/works great.

  • @Brian Lam - I also have scratches on the steel(?) rim. I noticed them before I bought the case, and they look like a miniature cat was scratching at it. I hadn't dropped the iPhone at all before the case either, so I don't understand how they got there. That was why I bought the case... But I plan on returning it tomorrow.

  • As a recent iphone accidently smashee (apple replaced it without hassle) I've come to realize that glass protection is key. If the case can't give you a nice number of milimeters of clearance if it falls face down, it's not going to cut it. Here's what happened to mine when it fell only about 1.5 feet to a tile floor. [hood.filefu.com]

  • I own the black and the red one. I like them because as some posters say, the "fugly" back texturing. It actually provides some nice gripping action to your hand so you will not drop it from slick hands. As for the blue one, it is listed on Goincase.com but is not yet available. I look forward to that one being blue is a favorite color of mine. I tend to like Incases products, I think they try to put some thought into their products.

  • Damn, Festivalman. That damage came from falling a foot and a half?

  • The Apple multitouch is capacitive. you cann not not put a transparent film on it to protect the sceen. The input would not work.

  • I have the black incase and its really nice. I think the "chrome rim" is nice but it really is the only vulnerable part of the iPhone. I think it would have scratched even without that case. As for particles scratching any other part of the phone? Nope. I take it off every night for docking and clean it off before putting it back on the iPhone so... Pretty nice. Why have a slim phone if the case is fat? Love it.

  • The static cling that came on the iPhone, I kept it on there until I could get my screen protector in. Phone works absolutely fine. Maybe I'm missing something I don't realize, but I won't be taking it off until I have a sure replacement.

  • I've had the Invisible Shield on my iPhone since day one, and it's as good as the one I've had on the iPod for two years. No problems manipulating all aspects of the phone - it's a little less "slidey" than the other screen protectors (or the iPhone naked) and takes getting used to, but it looks great and I never have to worry about it.

Applying the Invisible Shield perfectly is a different matter. I'd recommend a free hour and a LOT of patience.

  • One case I got had a sticky plastic protector that you could apply to the front of the iPhone. I tried it, then took it off because it didn't fit very well.

The touch screen, however, worked fine with the extra layer of plastic.

Anyone who says it can't work (pope, fengpost) is operating from theory, not fact. Besides, if the capacitive layer doesn't work if covered up... then how does it work through glass?

  • Got one the day I bought my iPhone. Thin enough -- doesn't add significantly more bulk, does the job, and can be removed easily. Also doesn't appear to pick up lint and crap from my pocket.
Definitely helps when you're passing around the iphone to others - the metal surface is a bit slick if when I get all butterfingers. Also beer-proof if you put in on a counter that has beer on it, I've found :-)

@ghmlco: No, I'm operating from the fact that other previous touchscreens in previous devices didn't work when covered. I guess the Apple touchscreen is a pretty superior doohicky.

  • I have this case and while it's awesome, my biggest complaint is that you have to take it off to dock it. As the review says, it starts to stretch and it doesn't stay on like it did when you first bought it. Other than that it's cool.

  • I bought this case the day that I got the iPhone. I returned it a little over a week later because it had started to stretch on one of the corners. that was just after one week of use, I figured that it would just fall out if I kept it. I also have a tendency to play with the case so that might have not helped it. I took it back to the Apple store and used my iPhone to bring up my receipt and replaced it with a clear case that came with the clear film.

  • Bought this a few days after I bought my iPhone, and was pretty pleased with it until (1) it started sagging and buckling after taking it off the phone once a day to dock it and clean the case as per the manufacturer's instructions, and (2) noticed that despite following said instructions, debris was indeed getting caught between the case and the phone, which means that the metal bezel around the screen of my phone is now scratched up pretty badly.

All in all, a complete waste of $30 (though I'm going to try to return it to the Apple Store tomorrow, since a lot of people seem to be having the same problem.)
