The geniuses from Monster and Friends have created an iPhone application which can record video up to 45 frames per second. They are still working in the final version, but to give you a taste they have published Drunknbass, a beta which records 5 seconds of video at 10 fps with a resolution of 2 megapixels. I've tested and it works perfectly. It doesn't have any interface, so you just download it, put it in your iPhone's Applications folder, click on the button and it will start recording.
When Drunknbass is finished with the five seconds recording it will replay the clip once. The final application will be able to record unlimited-sized clips (only constrained by your available space) up to 30 frames per second and it will have an interface to save your clips (they are looking for developers to help with the graphical side of the software).

This is good for three things: first, because this confirms that video recording works great on the iPhone and we will probably see this officially from Apple, as rumored, in a future update. Second, because it confirms there are no limits that third-party developers can't overcome.
Oh, and third: you can't go wrong with a name like Drunknbass. [Monster and Friends via Modmyifone]

cool! oh yea first
Damn second
It's funny how all the killer apps for the iPhone require you to break it and void your warranty.
And by funny, I mean sucks.
@mullingitover: Installing apps in your iPhone doesn't necessarily void the warranty. You can install Installer.app and, if you ever have to take the phone to the store, you flash it to its original state and that will be it. Exactly as new.
Unlocking your iPhone, however, will void the warranty. But this is completely different.
Glad to see something like this out. Phone phone isn't jailbroken, but this is making it more and more tempting.
I meant my iPhone isn't jailbroken. Stupid keyboard >.>
Whats the point of all this!!...shouldn apple just be graceful and add video recording via firmware upgrade,or fix all the silly shortcomings for tht matter...its forcing the iPhone users to act like sly lil kids,doin devious things behind their parents backs!!
@ovil200:
I know, those damn keyboards that have the word "Phone" instead of a letter are "I" are damn annoying....
hehe, jks :)
At this point, you might as well wait for Jan for the new announcement or leaks of the iP2
does it record sound? some people like to do more than just make silent 360 degree room movies.
@nikeplr: why pay employees in R&D to do it when you have a whole slew of little apple-fanboy elves working away for free 'till the wee hours of the morning creating this stuff. It's genius! Create a blank slate of a phone with disclaimers such as "oh, please please please don't mess with the pretty phone - or else we'll tell you to stop again" is basically asking the public to do the work for you. ...kinda' like blogs...
Very neat, can't wait!
Agreed... Me and my crew had a semi-recurring drum n bass night we called Drunk n' Bass :P
the big problem is that most of the fish I know are REALLY mean drunks... like pull your shirt over your head and do rude things to you mean
Maybe an Apple update can enable video and audio recording, but Drunknbass app looks so cool. Thaanks Jesus for this report =D
*yawn*
1600x1200 resolution - great! Then you can record video in 720p(1280x720, that's better than any other cellphone out there)
@moveteam:
2MP @ 10fps. I don't think you read the article fully.
Ok - uhh, I dont understand how to get this one. I have installer.app but I dont see this in available packages - do you have to download it and FTP it over to the phone to use this one or something?
What's with the "first" comments on Gizmodo of late?
Kiddies out of school for the holidays already?
Time for some holiday banhammerin'
As for the app, it's very very cool.
It's interesting to see the apps coming out for this thing.
@mullingitover: Yea I mean who wants a camera phone that can actually record video?! I mean nobody does that right?!
I can't wait for the day when iPhone apps stories are left alone by the trolls and iPhone haters. I mean seriously, if you don't care about these hacks/apps then go read about the pig toy instead: [gizmodo.com]
This is a great hack. I've been waiting for this one. Kudos to them.
@strider_mt2k: I especially love it when the browser doesn't automatically show the first comments, and the "first!" comment is third or fourth.
GET A REAL PHONE.
@strider_mt2k: that's a good suggestion. Banhammering, I mean.
@02: suggestions?
@jesusdiaz: If you unlock you can virginize your baseband :) and that would make it exactly as new from the deepest point, anyway, i understand MULLINGITOVER point, video recording should be there from the begining, as well as many others like voice rec. but well, ive had a lot of fun hacking/
Hideous couch. Sweet Jesus!
why wouldn't apple enable this from the beginning if it's capable?
put the iphone away and go to sleep honey....
standard douchebaggery
I love all these apps as much as the next guy and I already have over a dozen installed on my phone, but I wish we could get some apps to fix some of the missing features that should've come standard with the iPhone like copying and pasting.
Does it record audio as well, or just video?
I'm surprized the iPhone did not record video to start with.
My V3 RZR does it right out of the box, albeit very poorly, but it does it!
I just don't get Apple. Locking the iPhone and missing a lot of software posibilities before release. I would call it Halfass engineering, let's just release it with what we know, and make some money....
It's a great software platform, but it seems that if Apple cannot make money out of you then you can't touch it. That's a very bad business model.
Well im sure the 2iphone will have this just standard i hope..
@toyotaboy: "why wouldn't apple enable this from the beginning if it's capable?"
Why wouldn't Apple release Leopard in 2001, instead of mucking about with OS X 10.1, 2, 3, and 4 for all those years?
@nachobel:
Sharp 903 - 3.2MP cam with Optical Zoom, 3G video calls etc.
SonyEricsson 850i - 5MP, 3G video calls etc
Nokia N95 - same as above.
Forget those touch screen stuff....
I love how they call it a "donation". Not that i have any problem paying for software, but its not like they are making this to be nice, they are trying to make a profit. Its not like you make a "donation" to Microsoft when you buy Windows or to Adobe when you buy Photoshop.
@dagamer34 - think before you speak... @dagamer34, you should think twice about dissing moveteam- try taking a photo on your iphone and transfer to the computer- it will come out as 1600x1200. multiply 1600x1200 and you get 1,920,000 pixels, or ~1.92 megapixels. Obviously the photos aren't exactly 2.0 megapixels- that would result in warped proportions. 2,000,000's sqrt. would be ~1414- which you may have noticed falls pretty darn near the middle of 1600 and 1200 moveteam did read the entire post, and then actually put some thought into his response, unlike you...
